  • The detection of virulence factors of Aeromonas is a key component in determining potential pathogenicity because these factors act multifunctionally and multifactorially. In this study water samples were collected from a trout farm on a seasonal basis, and diseased fish and Aeromonas species were isolated and identified. For rapid detection of six virulence factors of isolated Aeromonas, a hexaplex-polymerase chain reaction (hexaplex-PCR) assay was used. The detected virulence factors include aerolysin (aer), GCAT (gcat), serine protease (ser), nuclease (nuc) lipase (lip) and lateral flagella (laf). The dominant strain found in our isolates was Aeromonas sobria, and the dominant virulence factors were aer and nuc for all seasons. We confirmed that A. sobria and two of the virulence genes (aer and nuc) are related. We proposed a method by which one can identify the major strains of Aeromonas: A. hydrophila, A. sobria, A. caviae, and A. veronii, using hexaplex-PCR.

  • This paper develops a novel technique of face detection using brightness distribution in the surrounding area of eye. The proposed face detection consists of facial component candidate extraction, facial component candidate filtering through eye-lip combination, left/right eye classification using brightness distribution, face verification confirming edges in nose region. Because the proposed technique don't use any skin color, it can detect multiple faces in color images with complicated backgrounds and different illumination levels. The experimental results reveal that the proposed technique is better than the traditional techniques in terms of detection ratio.

  • In this paper, we propose a recognition application of facial expression for laughter theraphy on smartphone. It detects face region by using AdaBoost face detection algorithm from the front camera image of a smartphone. After detecting the face image, it detects the lip region from the detected face image. From the next frame, it doesn't detect the face image but tracks the lip region which were detected in the previous frame by using the three step block matching algorithm. The size of the detected lip image varies according to the distance between camera and user. So, it scales the detected lip image with a fixed size. After that, it minimizes the effect of illumination variation by applying the bilateral symmetry and histogram matching illumination normalization. After that, it computes lip eigen vector by using PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and recognizes laughter expression by using a multilayer perceptron artificial network. The experiment results show that the proposed method could deal with 16.7 frame/s and the proposed illumination normalization method could reduce the variations of illumination better than the existing methods for better recognition performance.

  • Recently, there is a new trend about internet of things (IoT) such as shops with smart mirror around the fashion and beauty industry. Since smart mirror can display a content through a monitor which is attached to back of mirror system while looking through a mirror, it can be applied to various industries such as fashion, beauty and health care. This paper proposes an efficient learning system requiring no assistance from others for the hearing deaf who atrophy verbal skill and are inaccurate in pronunciation by using features of smart mirror. Also, this system proposes an efficient and simple lip reading method which can be applied to an embedded system and improves a learning efficiency by employing previously verified pronunciation training data.

  • In this paper, we present a detection method of facial angle using facial features. First, it finds face image using haar-like feature. After that, it finds eyes and lip in need of compute of face rotation angle. Next, it makes a triangle by using the facial features and computes the inside angle. As a result of experiment on various face images, the proposed method improves the efficiency much better than the conventional methods below $40^{\circ}$.

  • Macroglossia is a relatively uncommon condition that occurs in pediatric patients for several reasons and contributes to variety of functional problems. Most of macroglossia arises from tissue overgrowth and tongue muscle hypertrophy. There are no definite guideline in prenatal management or diagnosis in this conditions. However, macroglossia is often associated with syndrome or congenital disease, prenatal diagnosis is important in early detection. There are difficulty in measurement of tongue size, and standardization. Macroglossia can be risky in some aspects, such as airway obstruction. In this review, the author suggest prenatal ultrasonographic findings of macroglossia, investigate differential diagnosis of conditions associated with macroglossia, and management in clinical situation. Macroglossia, when present, can cause a number of functional and aesthetic problems for individuals. Treatment of this problem is challenging and controversial.

  • We report the rehabilitation of Class II malocclusion with multiple teeth fracture due to trauma. A multidisciplinary team approach was necessary to treat patient's problems such as bone fracture, malocclusion, and multiple teeth fracture. Emergency conservative treatment, orthodontic treatment and prosthetic restoration successfully restored the occlusion. However, special considerations were needed along the orthodontic treatment process due to the unexpected complications such as ankylosis, root resorption and detection of additional teeth fractures.

  • Background: It is vital to identify more efficient anesthesia techniques for the restorative or endodontic treatment of mandibular molars. Both articaine buccal infiltration anesthesia (ABI) and lidocaine inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia (LIANB) may not provide profound anesthesia, necessitating supplementary anesthesia. This study aimed to investigate whether lidocaine intraosseous lidocaine intraosseous anesthesia (LIO) is more suitable than ABI as primary anesthesia for caries treatment of mandibular molars. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed patients treated for advanced caries according to the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) 5 and 6. The study involved 48 patients, split evenly between those receiving ABI and LIO, and examined the anesthesia success rate, pain during anesthesia, onset time, duration, and post-anesthesia lower lip numbness using Chi-square and Independent T-tests. Results: In the ABI group, 17 patients (70.8%) did not require additional anesthesia, whereas all 24 patients (100%) in the LIO group did not require additional anesthesia (P < 0.001). ABI was associated with significantly higher pain during anesthesia, slower onset time, and longer duration of anesthesia than LIO. There was no significant difference in post-anesthesia lower lip numbness between the two methods. Conclusion: Intraosseous anesthesia using lidocaine is more effective for treating severe caries in the mandibular molars because of its higher success rate, decreased pain during anesthesia, faster onset, and shorter recovery time.

  • In this paper, we proposed a face detection algorithm and a hardware implementation method for ROI(Region Of Interest) of AF(Auto Focusing). We used face features in skin regions of YCbCr color space for face detection. The face features are the number of skin pixels in face regions, edge pixels in eye regions, and shadow pixels in lip regions. The each feature was statistically selected by 2,000 sample pictures of face. The proposed algorithm detects two faces that are closer center of the image for considering the effectiveness of hardware resource. The detected faces are displayed by rectangle for ROI of AF, and the rectangles are represented by positions in the image about starting point and ending point of the rectangles. The proposed face detection method was verified by using FPGA boards and mobile phone camera sensor.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for achieving robust Visual Voice Activity Detection (VVAD) for enhanced speech recognition. In conventional VVAD algorithms, the motion of lip region is found by applying an optical flow or Chaos inspired measures for detecting visual speech frames. The optical flow-based VVAD is difficult to be adopted to driving scenarios due to its computational complexity. While invariant to illumination changes, Chaos theory based VVAD method is sensitive to motion translations caused by driver's head movements. The proposed Local Variance Histogram (LVH) is robust to the pixel intensity changes from both illumination change and translation change. Hence, for improved performance in environmental changes, we adopt the novel threshold estimation using total variance change. In the experimental results, the proposed VVAD algorithm achieves robustness in various driving situations.
