Earthquake Response Analysis of an Offshore Wind Turbine Considering Effects of Geometric Nonlinearity of a Structure and Drag Force of Sea Water (기하 비선형과 항력 효과를 고려한 해상풍력발전기의 지진 응답해석)

  • In this study, the capability of an existing analysis method for the fluid-structure-soil interaction of an offshore wind turbine is expanded to account for the geometric nonlinearity and sea water drag force. The geometric stiffness is derived to take care of the large displacement due to the deformation of the tower structure and the rotation of the footing foundation utilizing linearized stability analysis theory. Linearizing the term in Morison's equation concerning the drag force, its effects are considered. The developed analysis method is applied to the earthquake response analysis of a 5 MW offshore wind turbine. Parameters which can influence dynamic behaviors of the system are identified and their significance are examined.

  • This paper describes the application of the finite element method to the large deflection elastic plastic analysis and ultimate load calculation of axisymmetric shell of revolution with initial imperfection subjected to external pressure. The nonlinear equilibrium equations are linearized by the successive incremental method and are solved by the combination of load increment and iteration scheme with considering plastic deformation theory. To get the more realistic effect of large deflection, corrected coordinats and directions of applied load ar every load increment steps are used. The effects of the plasticity, initial imperfection and the shape of shells on the ultimate load of clamped circular cap under external pressure are investigated. Consequently, the following conclusions are obtained; (1) At same geometric parameter $\lambda$, each shape of clamped circular caps yield same elastic ultimate loads in both cases, i.e. with and without initial imperfections, whereas, in the case of elastic-plastic state the shell becomes thicker, the ultimate loads are getting smaller. (2) The effects of initial imperfection to ultimate load are most significant in the elastic case and are more senstive in the elastic-plastic state with the thinner shells.

  • A torque trajectory control of the IPM synchronous motor using an adaptive input-output linearization technique is proposed. The input-output linearization is performed using the estimated torque output with the knowledge of machine parameters. The linearized model gives the output torque error under the variation of the flux linkage. To give a good torque tracking in the presence of the flux linkage variation, the flux linkage will be estimated where the adaptation law h derived by the Popov's hyperstability theory and the positivity concept. This estimated value is also used for the generation of the d-axis current command for the maximum torque control. Thus, a good torque tracking and the exact maximum torque-per-current operation will be obtained.

  • Wheel-rail noise is normally classified into three catagories : rolling impact and squeal noise. In this paper rolling noise caused by the irregularity between a wheel and a rail is analysed as follows: The irregularity between the wheel and the rail is assumed as linear superposition of sinusoidal profiles. Wheel-rail contact stiffness is linearized by using Hertzian contact theory and then contact force between the wheel and the rail is calculated. vibration of the rail and the wheel is calculated theoretically by receptance method or FEM depending on the geometry of the wheel or the rail for the frequency range of 100-500 Hz important for noise generation. The radiation noise caused by those vibration response is computed by BEM To verify this analysis tools rolling noise is calculated by proposed analysis steps using typical roughness data and these results are compared with experimental rolling noise data. This analysis tools show reasonable results and finally used for the prediction of the Korean high speed train rolling noise.

The influence of the initial stresses on Lamb wave dispersion in pre-stressed PZT/Metal/PZT sandwich plates

  • Within the scope of the plane-strain state, by utilizing the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed piezoelectric and elastic materials, Lamb wave propagation and the influence of the initial stresses on this propagation in a sandwich plate with pre-stressed piezoelectric face and pre-stressed metal elastic core layers are investigated. Dispersion equations are derived for the extensional and flexural Lamb waves and, as a result of numerical solution to these equations, the corresponding dispersion curves for the first (fundamental) and second modes are constructed. Concrete numerical results are obtained for the cases where the face layers' materials are PZT-2 or PZT-6B, but the material of the middle layer is Steel (St) or Aluminum (Al). Sandwich plates PZT-2/St/PZT-2, PZT-2/Al/PZT-2, PZT-6B/St/PZT-6B and PZT-6B/Al/PZT-6B are examined and the influence of the problem parameters such as piezoelectric and dielectric constants, layer thickness ratios and third order elastic constants of the St and Al on the effects of the initial stresses on the wave propagation velocity is studied.

Dispersion of axisymmetric longitudinal waves in a "hollow cylinder + surrounding medium" system with inhomogeneous initial stresses

  • The paper studies the dispersion of the axisymmetric longitudinal wave propagating in the "hollow cylinder + surrounding medium" system with inhomogeneous initial stresses caused by the uniformly distributed radial compressional forces acting at infinity. Up to now in the world literature, there exist only a few investigations related to the wave dispersion in a hollow cylinder with inhomogeneous initial stresses. Therefore, this paper is one of the first attempts in this field in the sense of the development of investigations for the case where the cylinder is surrounded with an infinite medium. The three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves is used for describing the considered wave propagation problem and, for a solution to the corresponding mathematical problem, the discrete-analytical solution method is developed and employed. The corresponding dispersion equation is obtained and this equation is solved numerically and, as a result of this solution, the dispersion curves are constructed for the first and second modes. By analyzing these curves, the character of the influence of the inhomogeneous initial stresses on the dispersion curves is established. In particular, it is established that as a result of the inhomogeneity of the initial stresses both new dispersion curves and the "band gap" for the wave frequencies can appear.

Comparison of Potential and Viscous Codes for Water Entry Problem

  • This paper presents a comparison of potential and viscous computational codes for the water entry problem. A po-tential code was developed which adopted the boundary element method to solve the problem. A nonlinear free surface boundary condition was integrated to find new locations of free surface. The dynamic boundary condition was simplified by taking constant potential values for every time steps. The simplified dynamic boundary condition was applied in the new position of the free surface not at the mean level, which is the usual practice for linearized theory. The commercial code FLUENT was used to solve the water entry problem from the viscosity point of view. The movement of the air-liquid interface is traced by distribution of the volume fraction of water in a computational cell. The pressure coefficients were compared with each other, while experimental results published by other researchers were also examined. The characteristics of each method were discussed to clarify merits and limitations when they were applied to the water entry problems.

Buckling of restrained steel columns due to fire conditions

  • An analytical procedure is presented for the determination of the buckling load and the buckling temperature of a straight, slender, geometrically perfect, axially loaded, translationally and rotationally restrained steel column exposed to fire. The exact kinematical equations of the column are considered, but the shear strain is neglected. The linearized stability theory is employed in the buckling analysis. Behaviour of steel at the elevated temperature is assumed in accordance with the European standard EC 3. Theoretical findings are applied in the parametric analysis of restrained columns. It is found that the buckling length factor decreases with temperature and depends both on the material model and stiffnesses of rotational and translational restraints. This is in disagreement with the buckling length for intermediate storeys of braced frames proposed by EC 3, where it is assumed to be temperature independent. The present analysis indicates that this is a reasonable approximation only for rather stiff rotational springs.

  • The changes of parameters of pressure and velocity of propagation of elastic pressure and shear waves in uniformly deformed solid compressible media are studied within the nonclassically linearized approach (NLA) of nonlinear elastodynamics to create a new theoretical basis of the geomechanical interpretation of various groups of geophysical observational and experimental data. The cases of small and large deformations are considered while their describing by various elastic potentials, i.e., problems considering the physical and geometric nonlinearity. Convenient analytical formulae are obtained to calculate the indicated parameters in the deformed isotropic media within the nonclassical linear and nonlinear solution in the NLA. Specific numerical experiments are conducted in case of overall compression of various materials. It is shown that the method (generally accepted in the studies of mechanics of standard constructional materials) of additional linearization (relative to the pressure parameter) in the basic correlations of the NLA introduces substantial quantitative and qualitative errors into the results at significant preliminary deformations. The influences of the physical and geometric nonlinearity on the studied characteristics of the medium are large in various materials and differ qualitatively. The contribution of nonlinear components to the values of the considered parameters prevails over linear components at large deformations. When certain critical values of compression deformations in the medium are achieved, elastic waves with actual velocity cannot propagate in it. The values of the critical deformations for pressure and shear waves differ within different elastic potentials and variants of the theory of initial deformations.

LMI-based $H_{\infty}$ Controller Design for a Line of Sight Stabilization System

  • This paper is concerned with the design of LMI based H$_{\infty}$ controller for a line of sight(LOS) stabilization system. This system which is even linearized to analyse nonlinear characteristic has also a lot of uncertainties. In addition, the angular velocity disturbance from the vehicle's driving deteriorates the stabilized LOS, main purpose of this system. In case of fast driving, particularly, all components which are ignored and skipped to make mathematical modelling act as the uncertainties against this system. The robustness against these uncertainties has been also continuously demanded including the well tracking performance for the target. Therefore, this paper employed H$_{\infty}$ control theory to satisfy these problems and LMI method to make suitable controller with few constraints for this system. Although this system matrix doesn't have full rank, this method make it possible to design H$_{\infty}$ controller and deal with R and S matrices for reducing its order. Consequently, this paper shows that the re-analyses on the real disturbances are achieved and the proposed robust controller for them has better disturbance attenuation and tracking performance. This paper contributes the applicability of reduced order H$_{\infty}$ controller to real system by handling LMI..
