  • A ship in waves is suffered from the various wave loads that comes from its motion throughout its life. Because these loads are dynamic, the analysis of a ship structure must be considered as the dynamic problem precisely. In the rationally-based design, the dynamic structural analysis is carried out using dynamic wave loads provided from the results of the ship motion calculation as a rigid body. This method is based on the linear theory assumed low wave height and small amplitude of motion. But at the rough sea condition, high wave height, compared with ship's depth, induce the large ship motion, so the ship section configuration under waterline is rapidly changed at each time. This results in a non-linear problem. Considering above situation in this paper, a strength analysis method is introduced for the hull girder among waves considering non-linear hydrodynamic forces. This paper evaluates the overall or primary level of the ship structural dynamic loading and dynamic response provided from the non-linear wave forces, and bottom flare impact forces by momentum slamming theory. For numerical calculation a ship is idealized as a hollow thin-walled box beam using thin walled beam theory and the finite element method is used. This method applied to a 40,000 ton double hull tanker and attention is paid to the influence of the response of the ship's speed, wave length and wave height compared with the linear strip theory.

  • Nonlinear response structural optimization is performed using equivalent loads (NROEL). Nonlinear response optimization is extremely cost because many nonlinear analyses are required. In NROEL, the external loads are transformed to the equivalent loads (EL) for linear static analysis and linear response optimization is carried out based on the EL in a cyclic manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. EL is the load set which generates the same response field of linear analysis as that of nonlinear analysis. The primitive from of theory has been published. In this research, the theory is investigated with large scale example problems. Four examples are solved by using NROEL. Conventional optimization with sensitivity analysis using the finite difference method (FDM) is also applied to the same examples. Moreover, response surface optimization method is applied to the last two examples. The results of the optimizations are compared. In nonlinear response optimization of large scale problems, hundreds (or even thousands) of nonlinear analyses are expected to satisfy the convergence criteria. However, in nonlinear response optimization using equivalent loads, only tens of nonlinear analyses are required. The results are discussed and the usefulness of NROEL is presented.

  • An extended model for the response of a rigid footing on a reinforced foundation bed on super soft soil is proposed by incorporating the rough membrane element into the granular bed. The super soft soil, the granular bed and the reinforcement are modeled as non-linear Winkler springs, non-linear Pasternak layer and rough membrane respectively. The hyperbolic stress-displacement response of the super soft soil and the hyperbolic shear stress-shear strain response of the granular fill are considered. The finite deformation theory is used since large settlements are expected to develop due to deformation of the super-soft soil. Parametric studies quantify the effect of each parameter on the stress-settlement response of the reinforced foundation bed, the settlement and tension profiles.

  • The dynamic response characteristics of a floating ocean city are examined for presenting the basic data for the design of huge offshore structures supported by a large number of floating bodies in waves. The numerical approach which is accurate in linear system is based on combination of a three dimensional source distribution method, wave interaction theory and the finite element method of using the space frame element. The hydrodynamic interactions among the floating bodies are taken into account in their exact form within the context of linear potential theory in the motion and structural analysis. The method is applicable to an arbitrary number of three dimensional bodies having any individual body geometries and geometrical arrangement with the restriction that the circumscribed, bottom-mounted. Imaginary vertical cylinder for each body does not contain any part of the other body. The validity of this procedure was verified by comparing with experimental results obtained in the literature.

  • A new theory of weightless sagging planer elasto-flexible cables under point loads is developed earlier by the authors and used for predicting the nonlinear dynamic response of cable-suspended linear elastic beams. However, this theory is not valid for nonlinear elastic cracked concrete beams possessing different positive and negative flexural rigidity. In the present paper, the flexural response of simply supported cracked concrete beams suspended from cables by two hangers is presented. Following a procedure established earlier, rate-type constitutive equations and third order nonlinear differential equations of motion for the structures undergoing small elastic displacements are derived. Upon general quasi-static loading, negative nodal forces, moments and support reactions may be introduced in the cable-suspended concrete beams and linear modal frequencies may abruptly change. Subharmonic resonances are predicted under harmonic loading. Uncoupling of the nodal response is proposed as a more general criterion of crossover phenomenon. Significance of the bilinearity ratio of the concrete beam and elasto-configurational displacements of the cable for the structural response is brought out. The relevance of the proposed theory for the analysis and the design of the cable-suspended bridges is critically evaluated.

  • A stochastic response spectrum method is proposed for simple evaluation of the structural response of an actively controlled aseismic structure. The response spectrum is constructed assuming a linear structure with an active mass damper (AMD) system, and an earthquake wave model given by the product of a non-stationary envelope function and a stationary Gaussian random process with Kanai-Tajimi power spectral density. The control design is executed using a linear quadratic Gaussian control strategy for an enlarged state space system, and the response amplification factor is given by the combination of the obtained statistical response values and extreme value theory. The response spectrum thus produced can be used for simple dynamical analyses. The response factors obtained by this method for a multi-degree-of-freedom structure are shown to be comparable with those determined by numerical simulations, demonstrating the validity and utility of the proposed technique as a simple design tool. This method is expected to be useful for engineers in the initial design stage for structures with active aseismic control.

  • In this research work, an exact analytical solution for thermal buckling analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates with clamped boundary condition subjected to uniform, linear, and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction is developed. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. A power law distribution is used to describe the variation of volume fraction of material compositions. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present refined theory. The non-linear governing equations are solved for plates subjected to simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. The thermal loads are assumed to be uniform, linear and non-linear distribution through-the-thickness. The effects of aspect and thickness ratios, gradient index, on the critical buckling are all discussed.

  • Nonlinear dynamic response of a sandwich beam considering porous core and nano-composite face sheet on nonlinear viscoelastic foundation with temperature-variable material properties is investigated in this research. The Hamilton's principle and beam theory are used to drive the equations of motion. The nonlinear differential equations of sandwich beam respect to time are obtained to solve nonlinear differential equations by Homotopy perturbation method (HPM). The effects of various parameters such as linear and nonlinear damping coefficient, linear and nonlinear spring constant, shear constant of Pasternak type for elastic foundation, temperature variation, volume fraction of carbon nanotube, porosity distribution and porosity coefficient on nonlinear dynamic response of sandwich beam are presented. The results of this paper could be used to analysis of dynamic modeling for a flexible structure in many industries such as automobiles, Shipbuilding, aircrafts and spacecraft with solar easured at current time step and the velocity and displacement were estimated through linear integration.

  • Nonlinear characteristics of the hydrodynamic journal bearing with circumferentially groove are analyzed numerically considering cavitation region, when an external sinusoidal shock is given to the system. The oil film force is obtained by solving the finite width universal Reynolds equation at each time step. Frequency response function and journal orbit obtained from both linear and nonlinear bearing simulations are compared with each other. The vibration response of the journal is different from the expectation obtained from the linear analysis as increase the vibration amplitude of external disturbance. Therefore, the linear theory is not adequate, and the nonlinear calculation such as used in this research is needed to design safety rotor systems.
