  • The ship sailing among waves suffers from the various wave loads that comes from its motion throughout its life. In the rationally-based design, the dynamic structural analysis is carried out using dynamic wave loads provided from the results of the ship motion calculation as the rigid body. This method is based on the linear theory assumed low wave height and small amplitude of motion. But at the rough sea condition, relatively high wave compared to the height ship's depth is induced the large ship motion, so configuration of the ship section below waterline changes rapidly at each time. This re-sults in a non-linear problem. Considering above situation we have already introduced the non-linear dynamic strength analysis method for the hull girder(refer vol. 29. No.4 November, 1992, Journal of SNAK). In this paper, estimation of the hull girder strength for various ship types such as tankers, containers and log carriers is carried out based on the introduced non-linear method. We expect that the results will be used as useful basic data for the es-timation of dynamic strength of ships in the rough sea.

  • The estimation of springing responses for recent ships is carried out, and application to a ship design is described. To this aim, springing effects on hull girder were re-evaluated, including non-linear wave excitations and torsional vibrations of the hull. The Timoshenko beam model was used to calculate stress distribution on the hull girder, using the superposition method. The quadratic strip method was employed to calculate the hydrodynamic forces and moments on the hull. In order to remove the irregular frequencies, we adopted 'rigid lid' on the hull free surface level, and addedasymptotic interpolation along the high frequency range. Several applications were carried out on the following existing ships: The Bishop and Price's container ship, S-175 container ship, large container, VLCC, and ore carrier. One of them is compared with the ship measurement result, while another with that of the model test. The comparison between the analytical solution and the numerical solution for a homogeneous beam-type artificial ship shows good agreement. It is found that Most springing energy comesfrom high frequency waves for the ships having low natural frequency and North Atlantic route etc. Therefore, the high frequency tail of the wave spectrum should be increased by $\omega$$\^{-3}$ instead of $\omega$$\^{-4}$ or $\omega$$\^{-5}$ for the springing calculation.

  • In this study, machine learning techniques were applied to predict the residual resistance coefficient (Cr) of low-speed full ships. The used machine learning methods are Ridge regression, support vector regression, random forest, neural network and their ensemble model. 19 hull form variables were used as input variables for machine learning methods. The hull form variables and Cr data obtained from 139 hull forms of KRISO database were used in analysis. 80 % of the total data were used as training models and the rest as validation. Some non-linear models showed the overfitted results and the ensemble model showed better results than others.

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface patches. To verity the validity of the developed program the numerical calculations for Wigley hull and Series 60( $C_B=0.6$) hull have been performed and the results obtained by the numerical calculations have been compared with the original hulls.

  • The generalized knapsack problem, or gknap is the combinatorial optimization problem of optimizing a nonnegative linear functional over the integral hull of the intersection of a polynomially separable 0 - 1 polytope and a knapsack constraint. Among many potential applications, the knapsack, the restricted shortest path, and the restricted spanning tree problem are such examples. We prove via the ellipsoid method the equivalence between the fully polynomial approximability and a certain pseudo-polynomial separability of the gknap polytope.

  • In combat operations, naval ships may be subjected to considerable air blast and underwater shock loads capable of causing severe structural damage. As the experimental study imposes great monetary and time cost, the numerical solution may provide a valuable alternative. This study emphasises on numerical analysis for optimization of stiffened and unstiffened plate's structural response subjected to air blast load. Linear and non linear finite element (FE) modeling and analysis was carried out and compared with existing experimental results. The obtained results reveal a good agreement between numerical and experimental observations. The presented FE models can eliminate confusion regarding parameters selection and FE operations processing, using commercial software available currently.

  • In this paper, the authors describe not only the linear-theoretical considerations of the hull forms which many schalors have been investigating by the hydrodynamics as to the rolling ships in the waves, but also measure the rolling angles of the models, the coefficients of the effective wave slopes, the forced rolling moments by the waves, the extinctive curves, and the amplitudes of the waves in view of changing both the drafts and the metacentres so that they may study the inclinations of models in the grinoll motion. Owing to the conclusions of these studies, we can learn the fact that the experimental results of the models in the waves agree almost to the linear-theoretical subjects.

  • A flow problem around a ship hull with the nonlinear free surface boundary condition has been considered within the potential flow assumption. The Green's function based on the hull boundary condition is constructed numerically and used to satisfy the free surface boundary condition. This singularity to be distributed ideally on the undulating free surface is put actually, for practical reasons, on the flat water surface with the assumption of linear variation of velocities between the two positions. The surfaces of singularity distribution are approximated by Hess and Smith type quadrilaterals. The radiation condition is only crudely satisfied and this produced one of the major difficulties arising in the present way of attacking the problem.

  • Ryu et al. proposed a multiple target angle-tracking algorithm with efficient equation for angular innovation, and Ryu's algorithm has good feature that it has no data association problem. Ryu's algorithm is only applicable to linear sensor array, because its efficient equation for angular innovation is derived in case of using a linear sensor array. In a many fields studying multiple target angle-tracking, the various shapes of sensor array are used. In sonar, a cylindrical sensor array is as much used as a linear sensor array, a example is hull mounted sonar. In this paper, Ryu's algorithm is modified to be applicable to cylindrical sensor array, and the tracking performance of a modified algorithm is verified by various computer simulations.
