Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the course of the mandibular canal on panoramic radiography and the visibility of this canal on both panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: The study consisted of panoramic radiographs and CBCT images from 262 patients. The course of the mandibular canal, as seen in panoramic radiographs, was classified into four types: linear, elliptical, spoon-shaped, and turning curves. The visibility of this canal from the first to the third molar region was evaluated by visually determining whether the mandibular canal was clearly visible, probably visible, or invisible. The visibihlity of the canal on panoramic radiographs was compared with that on CBCT images. Results: Elliptical curves were most frequently observed along the course of the mandibular canal. The percentage of clearly visible mandibular canals was the highest among the spoon-shaped curves and the lowest among the linear curves. On panoramic radiographs, invisible mandibular canals were found in 22.7% of the examined sites in the first molar region, 11.8% in the second molar region, and 1.3% in the third molar region. On CBCT cross-sectional images, the mandibular canal was invisible in 8.2% of the examined sites in the first molar region, 5.7% in the second molar region, and 0.2% in the third molar region. Conclusion: The visibility of this canal was lower in the first molar region than in the third molar region. The mandibular canal presented better visibility on CBCT images than on panoramic radiographs.

Steam tables including superheated, saturated and compressed region were simultaneously modeled using the neural networks. Pressure and temperature were used as two inputs for superheated and compressed region. On the other hand Pressure and dryness fraction were two inputs for saturated region. The outputs were specific volume, specific enthalpy and specific entropy. The neural network model were compared with the linear interpolation model in terms of the percentage relative errors. The criterion of judgement was selected with the percentage relative error of 1%. In conclusion the neural networks showed better results than the interpolation method for all data of superheated and compressed region and specific volume of saturated region, but similar for specific enthalpy and entropy of saturated region.

Dynamic characteristics of thermally-forced stratification process in a square enclosure with a linear temperature profile at the side walls have been investigated through flow visualization experiment and numerical analysis. The experiment was performed on air with the Rayleigh numbers of order $10^5$. A particle tracer method is used for the flow visualization and to obtain a sudden linear temperature profile at the side walls copper blocks which already have a linear temperature profile are come into contact with the thin copper plates of the test section. Immediately a meridional circulation is developed and heat transfer takes place from the wall to the interior region by circulation of fluid and finally a thermal stratification is achieved. In the numerical study, QUICK scheme for convective terms, SIMPLE algorithm for pressure correction, and the implicit method for the time marching are adopted for the integration of conservation equations. Comparison of flow visualization and numerical results shows that the developing flow patterns are very similar in dynamic nature even though there is a time lag due to the inevitable time delay in setting up a linear temperature profile. For high Rayleigh numbers, the oscillatory motion is likely to take place and stratified region is extended. However, initial temperature adjustment process is much slower than that for low Rayleigh numbers.

Various linear system solvers with multi-physics analysis schemes are compared focusing on the near-field region considering thermal-hydraulic-chemical (THC) coupled multi-physics phenomena. APro, developed at KAERI for total system performance assessment (TSPA), performs a finite element analysis with COMSOL, for which the various combinations of linear system solvers and multi-physics analysis schemes should to be compared. The KBS-3 type disposal system proposed by Sweden is set as the target system and the near-field region, which accounts for most of the computational burden is considered. For comparison of numerical analysis methods, the computing time and memory requirement are the main concerns and thus the simulation time is set up to one year. With a single deposition hole problem, PARDISO and GMRES-SSOR are selected as representative direct and iterative solvers respectively. The performance of representative linear system solvers is then examined through a problem with an increasing number of deposition holes and the GMRES-SSOR solver with a segregated scheme shows the best performance with respect to the computing time and memory requirement. The results of the comparative analysis are expected to provide a good guideline to choose better numerical analysis methods for TSPA.

Nonpotential characteristics of magnetic fields in AR 5747 are examined using Mees Solar Observatory magnetograms taken on Oct. 20, 1989 to Oct. 22, 1989. The active region showed such violent flaring activities during the observational span that strong X-ray flares took place including a 2B/X3 flare. The magnetogram data were obtained by the Haleakala Stokes Polarimeter which provides simultaneous Stokes profiles of the Fe I doublet 6301.5 and 6302.5. A nonlinear least square method was adopted to derive the magnetic field vectors from the observed Stokes profiles and a multi-step ambiguity solution method was employed to resolve the $180^{\circ}$ ambiguity. From the ambiguity-resolved vector magnetograms, we have derived a set of physical quantities characterizing the field configuration, which are magnetic flux, vertical current density, magnetic shear angle, angular shear, magnetic free energy density, a measure of magnetic field discontinuity MAD and linear force-free coefficient. Our results show that (1) magnetic nonpotentiality is concentrated near the inversion line in the flaring sites, (2) all the physical parameters decreased with time, which may imply that the active region was in a relaxation stage of its evolution, (3) 2-D MAD has similar patterns with other nonpotential parameters, demonstrating that it can be utilized as an useful parameter of flare producing active region, and (4) the linear force-free coefficient could be a evolutionary indicator with a merit as a global nonpotential parameter.
Collinearity among independent variables can have severe effects on the precision of response estimation for some region of interest in the experiments with mixture. A method of finding optimal linear restriction on regression parameter in linear model for mixture experiments in the sense of minimizing integrated mean squared error is studied. We use the formulation of optimal restrictions on regression parameters for estimating responses proposed by Park(1981) by transforming mixture components to mathematically independent variables.
A linear programming problem of the optimal proportioning of concrete aggregates is discussed; and a self-adaptive genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem. The proposed method is based on changing a range of variables for capturing the feasible region of the optimum solution. A computational verification of this method is compared with the results of the linear programming.
In this paper, an adaptive trust region method based on the conic model for unconstrained optimization problems is proposed and analyzed. We establish the global and super linear convergence results of the method. Numerical tests are reported that confirm the efficiency of the new method.

In this paper, we extracted heart region using dyamic contour model, increased the vertical resolution of heart region by proposed 2-dimensional interpolation method and visualized the 3-dimensional hearet volutme. the proposed new energy term of dynamic contour model considering the gray level and direction of controur vectors is effective to extract the closed heart boundary. And, we generatedvertical slice images from the extracted heart region images using the 2-dimensional linear interpolation by DT(distance transform). We showed that proposed algorithm is useful by 3-dimensional visualization of heart volume.

There are no authentic solutions in a face region extraction problem though it is an important part of pattern recognition and has diverse application fields. It is not easy to develop the facial region extraction algorithm because the facial image is very sensitive according to age, sex, and illumination. In this paper, to solve these difficulties, a fuzzy color filer based on the facial region extraction algorithm is proposed. The fuzzy color filter makes the robust facial region extraction enable by modeling the skin color. Especially, it is robust in facial region extraction with various illuminations. In addition, to identify the fuzzy color filter, a linear matrix inequality(LMI) optimization method is used. Finally, the simulation result is given to confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithm.
