Cycle-to-cycle variation has long been recognized as limiting the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, in particular, under lean and highly diluted operation conditions. At a part load, some of the cycles tend to knock, while others may have incomplete combustion by the time the exhaust valve opens. An experimental study has been performed in order to evaluate the relative contribution of several relevant parameters on the cyclic variability in spark ignition engines. In general, the stability of engine operation is improved with fuel injector according to the optimal injection timing, but the stability of engine operation at idle is not improved compared with a practical gasoline engine. In this study, we investigated the relationship of the effect of operating conditions for the stability at low speed and load.

This paper estimates the capacity of shunt type active power filters(APF) for harmonic/reactive power compensation with a thyristor converter load. The base capacity requirement of APF is defined for idealized converter load current waveform and the effect of commutation overlap on the APF capacity is examined. The APF capacity required for reactive power compensation in addition to the harmonic elimination is estimated to give maximum achievable power factor for various operating condition of the partially-loaded thyristor converter. The method of current limit of APF is introduced, and it is shown that the APF capacity can be considerably reduced by deliberately limiting the peak current while maintaining the filtering performance to meet the level std 519 regulation.
At launch, satellites are exposed to various types of structural loads, such as quasi-static loads, sinusoidal vibrations, acoustic/random vibrations, and shocks. The launch environment test is aimed at verifying the structural stability of the test object against the launch environment. Various types of launch environments are simulated by simple vibration, acoustic, and shock tests considering possible test conditions in ground. However, the difference between the launch environment and the test environment is one of the causes of excessive testing. To prevent overtesting, a notching technique that adjusts the frequency range and the input load considering the design load is applied. For notching, specific procedures are established considering the satellite development concept, selected launch vehicle, higher system requirements, and test target level. In this study, the notching method, established procedure, and development of a notching toolkit for efficient testing are described.

This paper presents the details of Finite Element (FE) analysis carried out to determine the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of Laced Steel-Concrete Composite (LSCC) beam, which was proposed and experimentally studied by the authors earlier (Anandavalli et al. 2012). The present study attains significance due to the fact that LSCC beam is found to possess very high deformation capacity at which range, the conventional laboratory experiments are not capable to perform. FE model combining solid, shell and link elements is adopted for modeling the beam geometry and compatible nonlinear material models are employed in the analysis. Besides these, an interface model is also included to appropriately account for the interaction between concrete and steel elements. As the study aims to quantify the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of the beam, a suitable damage model is made use of in the analysis. The FE model and results of nonlinear static analysis are validated by comparing with the load-deformation response available from experiment. After validation, the analysis is continued to establish the limiting deformation capacity of the beam, which is assumed to synchronise with tensile strain in bottom cover plate reaching the corresponding ultimate value. The results so found indicate about $20^{\circ}$ support rotation for LSCC beam with $45^{\circ}$ lacing. Results of parametric study indicate that the limiting capacity of the LSCC beam is more influenced by the lacing angle and thickness of the cover plate.

There is a growing interest in various microgrid solutions that supply electricity 24 hours a day to off-grid areas where are not connected with the main grid, and Korea has many positive effects by constructing overseas microgrids as a country operating the emission trading scheme. Since it is not clear how to obtain load curves that is one of the inputs of the HOMER used to design a microgrid optimization plan, or it is necessary to examine whether electricity is supplied to the peak load level of the areas where have not received the electricity benefits from the viewpoint of the demand management, a methodology should be developed to know the load composition ratio and the shape of the daily load curve. In this paper, the relative coefficient and average load information for each load group obtained from the survey are used besides peak load and total average load. A mathematical model is proposed to derive the load composition ratio in the form of a Quadratic Programming and the load forecasting is performed using simple linear regression with future indicators. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed for the Philippine island region supported by Korea Energy Agency and the Asian Development Bank.

This paper presents analytic bending moment solution and resonance diagrams for a uniform beam of infinite length subjected to anaxial force and moving transverse load. Solutions are obtained that are time invariant in a coordinate system moving with the load velocity. The supporting foundation includes damping effects. The influences of the axial force, damping coefficient and load velocity on the beam response are studied. The limiting case of no damping and critial damping are also investigated. The profiles of the mement of the beam is shown graphically for several values of the load speed, the axial force and damping parameters.

The apparently different physical problems of lateral vibration and elastic stability of a linear member are limiting cases of a single phenomenon, the more general expression being the mode of vibration with end thrust. For a single-span beam-column, it is generally known that the square of the frequency of lateral vibration is approximately linearly related to compressive axial force. In this paper the relationship between the frequency and axial force of multi-span compression members is investigated by means of the finite element method.

IEC 61000-3-7 provides guidance for limiting flicker and enabling the connection of fluctuating load installations, that is, producing flicker in MV, HV and EHV power systems. In Korea, the flicker have been restricted by Japanese standard of ${\Delta}V_{10}$ method. ${\Delta}V_{10}$ was developed only for arc furnaces in 1960's. And now it is revealed that it is not suitable for application to other fluctuating load installations through many researches. $P_{st}$ which is a flicker index used in IEC 61000-3-7, indicates visual inconvenience due to voltage fluctuation across large range of frequency and can be applied to fluctuating load installations as well as arc furnaces. In this paper, we introduce how to calculate and assess flicker emission level for the individual fluctuating load installations connected in EHV system and how to manage the emission levels in the power system according to IEC 61000-3-7.
Beam-columns are structural members subjected to a combination of axial and bending forces. Lateral-torsional buckling is one of the main failure modes. Beam-columns that are bent about its strong axis may buckle out of the plane by deflecting laterally and twisting as the values of the applied loads reach a limiting state. Lateral-torsional buckling failure occurs suddenly in beam-column elements with a much greater in-plane bending stiffness than torsional or lateral bending stiffness. This study intends to establish a unique convenient closed-form equation that it can be used for calculating critical elastic lateral-torsional buckling load of beam-column in the presence of a known axial load. The presented equation includes first order bending distribution, the position of the loads acting transversely on the beam-column and mono-symmetry property of the section. Effects of axial loads, slenderness and load positions on lateral torsional buckling behavior of beam-columns are investigated. The proposed solutions are compared to finite element simulations where thin-walled shell elements including warping are used. Good agreement between the analytical and the numerical solutions is demonstrated. It is found out that the lateral-torsional buckling load of beam-columns with mono-symmetric sections can be determined by the presented equation and can be safely used in design procedures.

A procedure to determine the axle load limits of asphalt concrete pavements are proposed in this study. Axle load limits are determined by calculating maximum tensile strains at the bottom of the asphalt stabilized base layer and maximum vertical strains at the top of the subgrade. In order to investigate the efficiency of axle configuration, calculated influence line of wheel load on domestic expressway pavement system is used. Limiting strains are selected through the analysis of conventional failure criteria. From the analysis of axle load limits about axle composition(single-axle, tandem-axle, tridem-axle), it is found that the axle load limits of tandem-axle and tridem-axle can be calculated by muitipling the axle load limits of single-axle by axle numbers and that axle load limits are closely related to the thickness of each layer of pavement structure. It is also found that the axle load limits by tensile strains are more critical than those by vertical strains on asphalt concrete pavement models of YOUNG-DONG, KYONG-IN and KYONG-BU expressways.
