  • Nuclear power plants (NPPs) have technical specifications (Tech Specs) to ensure that the equipment and key operating parameters necessary for the safe operation of the power plant are maintained within limiting conditions for operation (LCO) determined by a safety analysis. The LCO of Tech Specs that identify the lowest functional capability of equipment required for safe operation for a facility must be complied for the safe operation of NPP. There have been previous studies to aid in compliance with LCO relevant to rule-based expert systems; however, there is an obvious limit to expert systems for implementing the rules for many situations related to LCO. Therefore, in this study, we present a retrieval methodology for similar LCO cases in determining whether LCO is met or not met. To reflect the natural language processing of NPP features, a domain dictionary was built, and the optimal term frequency-inverse document frequency variant was selected. The retrieval performance was improved by adding a Boolean retrieval model based on terms related to the LCO in addition to the vector space model. The developed domain dictionary and retrieval methodology are expected to be exceedingly useful in determining whether LCO is met.

  • Limiting conditions for operations (LCOs) are evaluated dynamically using the tool of system dynamics. The LCOs de-fine the allowed outage times (AOTs) and the actions to be taken if the repair cannot be completed within the AOT. System dynamics has been developed to analyze the dynamic reliability of a complicated system. System dynamics using Vensim software have been applied to LCOs assessment for an example system, the auxiliary feed water system of a reference nuclear power plant. Analysis results of both full power operation and shutdown operation have been compared for a measure of core damage frequency. The framework developed in this study has been shown to be very flexible in that it can be applied to assess LCOs quantitatively under any operational context of the TS in FSAR.

  • A double line commutation (DLC) type SFCL with first peak limiting function has been proposed for ideal fault current limiting operation. Very fast switching (commutation) without any arc or high voltage problems for any kind of switching device is needed for the first peak current limiting. We've tried to find suitable conditions for a successful switching of a Vacuum Interrupter (VI) with HTS elements as a Peak Current limiting Resistance (PCR).

  • Cycle-to-cycle variation has long been recognized as limiting the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, in particular, under lean and highly diluted operation conditions. At a part load, some of the cycles tend to knock, while others may have incomplete combustion by the time the exhaust valve opens. An experimental study has been performed in order to evaluate the relative contribution of several relevant parameters on the cyclic variability in spark ignition engines. In general, the stability of engine operation is improved with fuel injector according to the optimal injection timing, but the stability of engine operation at idle is not improved compared with a practical gasoline engine. In this study, we investigated the relationship of the effect of operating conditions for the stability at low speed and load.

  • A power limiting algorithm is proposed for stable operation of grid-connected inverter in case of grid voltage unbalance considering the operation limit of inverter. During the voltage unbalance the control performance of Inverter. is degraded and the output power contains 120Hz ripple due to the negative sequence of voltage. In this paper, conventional dual sequence current controller is implemented to solve these problems using separated control of positive and negative sequence. Especially the maximum power limit which guarantees the maximum rated current of the inverter is automatically calculated as the instant grid voltage changes. As soon as the voltage recovers the proposed algorithm can return to the normal power control mode accomplishing low voltage ride through. Proposed algorithm is verifed using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations and tested experimentally at 4.4kW wind turbine simulator set-up.

  • Selection of suitable ice class for ships operation is an important but not simple task. The increased exploitation of the Polar waters, both seasonal periods and geographical areas, as well as the introduction of new international design standards such as Polar Code, reduces the relevancy of using existing experience as basis for the selection, and new methods and knowledge have to be developed. This paper will analyse what can be the limiting ice thickness for ships navigating in the Russian Arctic and designed according to the Finnish-Swedish ice class rules. The permanent deformations of ice-strengthened shell structures for various ice classes is determined using MT Uikku as the typical size of a vessel navigating in ice. The ice load in various conditions is determined using the ARCDEV data from the winter 1998 as the basic database. By comparing the measured load in various ice conditions with the serviceability limit state of the structures, the limiting ice thickness for various ice classes is determined. The database for maximum loads includes 3-weeks ice load measurements during April 1998 on the Kara Sea mainly by icebreaker assistance. Gumbel 1 distribution is fitted on the measured 20 min maximum values and the data is divided into various classes using ship speed, ice thickness and ice concentration as the main parameters. Results encouragingly show that present designs are safer than assumed in the Polar Code suggesting that assisted operation in Arctic conditions is feasible in rougher conditions than indicated in the Polar Code.

  • Electrodialysis (ED) is known to be a useful membrane process for desalination, concentration, separation, and purification in many fields. In this process, it is desirable to work at high current density in order to achieve fast desalination with the lowest possible effective membrane area. In practice, however, operating currents are restricted by the occurrence of concentration polarization phenomena. Many studies showed the occurrence of a limiting current density (LCD). The limiting current density in the electrodialysis process is an important parameter which determines the electrical resistance and the current utilization. Therefore, its reliable determination is required for designing an efficient electrodialysis plant. The purpose of this study is the development of a predictive model of the limiting current density in an electrodialysis process using response surface methodology (RSM). A two-factor central composite design (CCD) of RSM was used to analyze the effect of operation conditions (the initial salt concentration (C) and the linear flow velocity of solution to be treated (u)) on the limiting current density and to establish a regression model. All experiments were carried out on synthetic brackish water solutions using a laboratory scale electrodialysis cell. The limiting current density for each experiment was determined using the Cowan-Brown method. A suitable regression model for predicting LCD within the ranges of variables used was developed based on experimental results. The proposed mathematical quadratic model was simple. Its quality was evaluated by regression analysis and by the Analysis Of Variance, popularly known as the ANOVA.

  • Since the discovery of the high-temperature superconductors, many researches have been performed for the practical applications of superconductivity technologies in various fields. As results, significant progress has been achieved. Especially, Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) offers an attractive means to limit fault current in power systems. The SFCLS, in contrast to current limiting reactors or high impedance transformers, are capable of limiting short circuit currents without adding considerable voltage drop and energy loss to power systems during normal operation. Under fault conditions, a resistance is automatically inserted into the power grid to limit the peak short-circuit current by transition from the superconducting state to the normal state, the quench. The advantages, like fail safe operation and quick recovery, make SFCL very attractive, especially for rapidly growing power systems with higher short-circuit capacities. In order to verify the effectiveness of the SFCL, in this paper, the analysis of fault current and voltage stability assessment in a sample distribution system and a transmission system are performed by the PSCAD/EMTDC based simulation method. Through the simulation, the advantage of SFCL application is shown, and the effective parameters of the SFCL are also recommended for both distribution and transmission systems. A resistive type component of SFCL is adopted in the analysis. The simulation results demonstrate not only the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme but also SFCL parameter assessment technique.

  • High pressure steam pipe in power plants is subjected to service conditions under which creep processes take place limiting the component's lifetime. To ensure a safe and economic operation it is necessary to get accurate information about the lifetime situation of single components as well as of the whole system. Careful evaluation is combined with FEM analysis, NDT, microstructure evaluation. Especially, 14MoV63 steel is used as material for main steam pipe for 30 years old power plants. In service inspections have shown an increasing number of cracks and creep cavities beside stress concentration parts. A detailed analysis came to the conclusion that lifetime has been consumed to a high degree, 80%level.

  • The development of automation technology to reduce human error by minimizing human intervention is accelerating with artificial intelligence and big data processing technology, even in the nuclear field. Among nuclear power plant operation modes, the startup and shutdown operations are still performed manually and thus have the potential for human error. As part of the development of an autonomous operation system for startup operation, this paper proposes an action coordinating strategy to obtain the optimal actions. The lower level of the system consists of operating blocks that are created by analyzing the operation tasks to achieve local goals through soft actor-critic algorithms. However, when multiple agents try to perform conflicting actions, a method is needed to coordinate them, and for this, an action coordination strategy was developed in this work as the upper level of the system. Three quantification methods were compared and evaluated based on the future plant state predicted by plant parameter prediction models using long short-term memory networks. Results confirmed that the optimal action to satisfy the limiting conditions for operation can be selected by coordinating the action sets. It is expected that this methodology can be generalized through future research.
