This paper analyzes and compares the blocking performance of all-optical wavelength-routed networks providing circuit switching among users. A connection between two nodes along a particular path must use a single wavelength on all hops, or links, within the path. We then calculate the blocking probability along a lightpath with wavelength conversion in a network with an arbitrary topology and show the network performance improvement offered by node with limited translation technology. We also propose a new schematic method for the performance analysis of different types of network architecture which is composed of nodes with or without wavelength conversion(NC, FC or LC).

In this paper, we investigate the features of scientific remote collaborative applications. The presented features are the high speed disk access, the high speed transportation protocol, and the dedicated light path, which are for the high performance of remote end-to-end collaboration. In the environment that satisfies the features, we achieve 4.7Gbps peak throughput between Korea and U.S.A.

In this paper, we address a problem of traffic grooming and wavelength routing in all optical WDM ring networks. Given a traffic demand for each node pair, we should aggregate the traffic onto lightpaths between pairs of nodes to transport the demand, and set up the routing path for each lightpath with minimum number of wavelengths to be assigned to lightpaths. In this paper, we formulate our problem as a mixed Integer Programming model. Owing to the problem complexity, it is hard to find an optimal solution for our problem. hence, we develop a heuristic algorithm to solve our problem efficiently. From the computational experiments, we can find the proposed heuristic is very satisfactory in both the computation time and the solution quality generated.

This paper considers the efficient design of routing path and wavelength assignment in the single-hop WDM optical transport networks. The connection demands between node-pairs are given and a connection between a pair of nodes must be made by only one lightpath. It is assumed that no wavelength conversion is allowed and the physical topology of the network and the number of available wavelengths of a physical link are also given. This paper proposes the method to route a path and assign a wavelength to the path, which guarantees fairness to every node pair. In order to guarantee fairness and maximize connections, an optimization model is established, which successively maximizes minimum connection ratio to the demand of each node pair. A heuristic algorithm with polynomial iterations is developed for the problem since the problem is NP-hard. The heuristic algorithm is implemented and applied to the networks with real problem sizes. The results of the application are compared with GAMS/OSL.
The large potential bandwidth available in wavelength-division multiplexed optical networks makes this technology of crucial importance for satisfying the ever increasing capacity requirements of the next-generation Internet. In this scenario, the routing and wavelength assignment(RWA) problem that concerns determining the optical paths and wavelengths to be used for connection establishment in a wavelength-routed network, is still one of the most important open issues. In this paper we propose a new online dynamic grooming-capable RWA heuristic scheme working on wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) networks as a multistage selection process. The proposed algorithm is transparent with respect to the presence of wavelength converters, achieves very low connection rejection ratios with minimal computational complexity and is appropriate for the modern multilayer optical circuit and wavelength switched networks with sparse wavelength conversion capability.
This paper reviews the existing research activities on signaling and control procedures for IP over optical networks. We focus on the IP-centric signaling and control architecture based on the generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) protocol and analyze various scenarios and technical issues for deploying the IP over an optical network. We analyze the signaling and operations and administration and maintenance requirements for integrating an IP network and an optical network in order to cope with the high bandwidth and poor resource granularity of the optical network, including the optical cross-connect system. On the basis of network architecture and a reference configuration model, we investigate the GMPLS-based control architecture and interconnection model appropriate for controlling IP bandwidth and optical lambda resources. The signaling and control procedure based on GMPLS on optical user-network interface and network-network interface are comparatively investigated to provide the optical lightpath. We also study protection and restoration procedures to protect link failure when it applies to generalized MPLS signaling.
In this letter, we design a collision resolution protocol for optical burst switching ring networks to avoid burst collision. We define the offset time condition for no burst transmission collision and manage the free time list of nodes for no burst reception collision. In order to improve the throughput, we use a fiber delay line, void-filling, and void-compression. This protocol does not require any additional procedures for bandwidth reservation such as centralized assignment of bandwidth, lightpath setup of WDM ring networks, or token capturing for the burst transmission. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol can achieve high throughput while saving 70% of wavelengths when compared to round robin with random selection, round robin with persistent, and round robin with non-persistent with only destination delay.
We propose a dynamic wavelength assignment algorithm for online RWA problem in WDM networks with wavelength conversion. With our algorithm, for a given network condition, the following results have been proven mathematically: (1) the probability to find the set of wavelengths for a requested connection is equal or better than any other previously proposed algorithms, (2) our algorithm minimizes the usage of converters by chaining the minimum number of the longest wavelength continuous segments, leaving more converters available for future requests and (3) the complexity of our algorithm is reasonable, which is also another advantage of our algorithm.

In this paper, we propose an efficient dynamic wavelength assignment algorithm in distributed WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) networks without wavelength conversion. The algorithm tries to assign a locally-most-used wavelength distributedly on a fixed routing path. We first formulate our algorithm by using the concept of a sample space which consists of optical fibers connected to nodes on a routing path of a lightpath to be assigned a wavelength. In particular, we analyze the blocking performance mathematically as compared with that of the most-used (MU) wavelength assignment algorithm previously proposed for WDM networks under centralized control. We also obtain numerical results by simulation on the blocking performance of other centralized/distributed wavelength assignment algorithms as well as our algorithm using the M/M/c/c dynamic traffic model. Consequently, we show that analytical results match simulation results and that our algorithm is efficient in distributed WDM networks in terms of blocking performance, control traffic overhead and computation complexity.
