  • Daylight is an important component for human and energy saving. Also, available daylight in inside provides positive influence on psychological and physiological aspects as well as good visual environment. It is important to lighting design for office building not only designing for artificial lighting but also using daylight for energy savings. Therefore, lighting designers and architectures must consider the effects of the daylight for human environment and energy savings. The BIN Method is one of the methods to predict energy savings using computer simulation but it spends more time than expectation. So, this study performs to simulate a simple space using the RADIANCE for examination and simplification of the BIN Method.

  • Heterophil (H) to lymphocyte (L) ratios and durations of tonic immobility (TI) were measured to assess stress and fear responses, respectively, in broiler chickens provided either 12 h of natural lighting (12L) or 12 h natural lighting and 12 h of supplementary lighting (24L). Birds illuminated 24L had greater H/L ratios and TI durations than their 12L counterparts. Neither age, sex nor cage level had significant effect on TI reactions.

  • We present the design and implementation of a unique sensing and actuation application -- the Illuminator: a sensor network-based intelligent light control system for entertainment and media production. Unlike most sensor network applications, which focus on sensing alone, a distinctive aspect of the Illuminator is that it closes the loop from light sensing to lighting control. We describe the Illuminator's design requirements, system architecture, algorithms, implementation and experimental results. The system uses the Illumimote, a multi-modal and high fidelity light sensor module well-suited for wireless sensor networks, to satisfy the high-performance light sensing requirements of entertainment and media production applications. The Illuminator system is a toolset to characterize the illumination profile of a deployed set of fixed position lights, generate desired lighting effects for moving targets (actors, scenic elements, etc.) based on user constraints expressed in a formal language, and to assist in the set up of lights to achieve the same illumination profile in multiple venues. After characterizing deployed lights, the Illuminator computes optimal light settings at run-time to achieve a user-specified actuation profile, using an optimization framework based on a genetic algorithm. Uniquely, it can use deployed sensors to incorporate changing ambient lighting conditions and moving targets into actuation. Experimental results demonstrate that the Illuminator handles various high-level user requirements and generates an optimal light actuation profile. These results suggest that the Illuminator system supports entertainment and media production applications.

  • This study proposes to increase the energy-saving effects by reducing excessive intensity of radiation of artificial lighting through analyzing daylight incident. A photosensor sends amounts of detected luminous flux to digital control unit(DCU) as a signal and then, it can decide dimming ratios, received a proper dimming signal from DCU. Generally it is effective to control artificial lighting with the different control ratio of each zone by setting a photosensor as same number and rows as artificial lighting. However, it is ineffective to do in initial costs of systems aspect in offices. As a result of grasping the distribution of daylight previously and analyzing daylight and dimming data, we can dim different dimming ratios to each zone of artificial lighting by a single photosensor.

  • Light is a critical element for people to live and do creative activities in residential buildings. Especially, light in the dim)ing room is the most important factor for psychological and emotional effects but people are living under the poor light environment. Most people even are not well aware of good lighting environment. Also, the domestic lighting designers just follow the Korean Standards illuminance but it isn't appropriated for our cultural and social sides. This study investigated illuminance and color temperature of dining tables, and also analyzed the results of those in actual residential buildings.

  • The visible light communication system that transmits data by controlling light emission of LED and receives data through photo detecter is considered as one of the strong candidates of the next generation wireless communication systems. The visible light communication provides both lighting and wireless communication wherever the LED lamps are installed. Due to the feature of visible light communication system, the communication is possible within the area that LED light reaches, and the communication quality depends on the light intensity received at the receiver. In this paper, we analyze the effects of LED panel position and lighting angel on communication channel quality in visible light communication systems. Through computer simulations, we prove that position of LED panel and light angle have a great impact on illuminance and SNR of the visible light communication systems.

  • Melatonin hormone involved in human's circadian rhythm adjustment sensitively responds to light's specific short wavelength ratio. A shift worker's circadian rhythm disturbance and sleep disorder are caused by the existing lighting conditions, whose short wavelength ratio is fixed. The life pattern of a shift worker changes irregularly because of irregular working hours and the same lighting environment; thus, his/her concentration is reduced. For such a reason, negative effects ensue to the detriment of healthy everyday life, including a high risk of accidents or having unsound sleep after leaving work. A smartphone-based wavelength control LED lighting system that targets shift workers and that can easily measure and control lighting suitable for wake-sleep cycle, according to working hours and closing hours, is proposed in this paper. First, after the light characteristics of LED lighting that changes depending on light control ratio are measured through the color sensor installed on the smartphone and the externally-linked Mini-Spectrometer, they are stored in the database. Based on the stored optical characteristics data, the measurement module and light control module are implemented. Lighting is offered using a control ratio having the maximum rate of short wavelength in consideration of the target illuminance, classified according to work type by identifying working hours as time when waking is required for shift workers. After a shift work leaves work, the amount of lighting is varied, using a control ratio having a minimum short wavelength rate so that a shift worker can enter the sleep state naturally.
