Ambers are composed of polymer molecules which contain aromatic moieties such as benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene and anthracene. They emit fluorescence when irradiated with ultraviolet light, which was used for confirming an amber. The fluorescence of amber, however, tends to decrease as the surface of amber is weathered with light, heat, oxygen for a long time. In this study, the reliability of confirming amber with its fluorescence by measuring the changes of fluorescence after artificial aging. Aging factors were UV light (${\lambda}$=340 nm), oxygen with heat (100%, $90^{\circ}C$) and heat ($90^{\circ}C$) and aging time was for 5, 15, 30 and 60 days, respectively. In the excitation and emission spectra of amber, the intensity decreased and the maximal wavelength was shifted to longer wavelength with artificial aging time. Especially, there was a drastic decrease in the intensity of spectra to 1.7% of initial value after 60 days aging under oxygen with heat. Only in Colombian amber there showed an increase of fluorescence intensity for a certain aging time, which could be explained by the production of aromatic ring in the presence of light and heat. Conclusively, the fluorescence can be lessened by the natural weathering with light, heat and oxygen and it is not accurate to recognize amber just with UV irradiation method.
This paper presents a miniature optical system for the fluorescence detection of the patterned protein chip. The patterned protein chip was fabricated using MEMS process. The fluorescence from the patterned protein chip was measured while varying the concentration of the BSA. The fluorescence light is separated spatially from the excitation beam using mini-size prism to increase SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio). The combination of prism and mirrors can convert the excitation light from the laser diode to uniform illumination on the specimen. We believe that the proposed system for fluorescence detection can be applied to rea1ization of point-of-care.
Recently, there have been improvements in diagnostic methods for the assessment of early caries lesions. The reason is that dental professionals are seeking methods to reliably detect incipient dental caries and to remineralize them. This review examines the literature on principles, theoretical background, and history of the Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence (QLF) system (Inspektor Research Systems BV, The Netherlands). Furthermore, this paper discusses the potential application of QLF system to clinical practice for educational purpose, enabling dental hygiene students to perform oral health assessment using the QLF system. In addition, the clinical application of QLF system can motivate patients by providing additional visual information about caries and bacterial activity. The evidences on validity and reliability of the QLF system for detection of longitudinal changes in de/remineralization and caries were examined. The QLF system is capable of monitoring and quantifying mineral changes in early caries lesions. Therefore, it can be used to assess the impacts of caries preventive measures on the remineralization and reversal of the caries process. And the QLF system is a very promising equipment to assess educational effectiveness for dental hygiene students in their learning process. In conclusion, the QLF system is the most effective technology for more sensitive staging of caries and treatment without surgical intervention.

A simplified integration process including packaging is presented, which enables the realization of the portable fluorescence detection system. A fluorescence detection microchip system consisting of an integrated PIN photodiode, an organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the light source, an interference filter, and a microchannel was developed. The on-chip fluorescence detector fabricated by poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based packaging had thin-film structure. A silicon-based integrated PIN photo diode combined with an optical filter removed the background noise, which was produced by an excitation source, on the same substrate. The active area of the finger-type PIN photo diode was extended to obtain a higher detection sensitivity of fluorescence. The sensitivity and the limit of detection (LOD S/N = 3) of the system were $0.198\;nA/{\mu}M$ and $10\;{\mu}M$, respectively.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the optical density of laser fluorescence for detection of incipient caries. Prepared and polished bovine enamel specimens were demineralized in a STPP solution for varying periods of time between 3 hrs. and 60 hrs. with an area of sound enamel retained on each specimen. The randomized specimens were analyzed for optical density of enamel demineralization using laser fluorescence. The specimens were sectioned and examined lesion depth by polarizing light microscope. Results were analyzed statistically with SAS program. The results from this study can be summarized as follows: 1. Optical density measured by laser fluorescence and lesion depth measured by polarizing light microscope was increased as demineralization time was increased(p<0.001). 2. Between optical density measured by laser fluorescence and lesion depth measured by polarizing light microscope was correlated highly(${\gamma}{\geq}0.74956$, p<0.001). 3. Regressive equation was obtained in this study as follows. Y=[X-0.260851]/0.000271(R-square:0.5618, p<0.001) (X:DENSITY, Y:DEPTH) In summary, optical density measured by laser fluorescence would be within the range of possibility to quantitatively presume demineralization amount of incipient caries lesion

The aim of this study was to apply the quantitative light-induced fluorescence(QLF) and use of fluorescein-enhanced QLF method for quantitative assessment of early enamel demineralization in vitro, comparing effectiveness of light sources : argon laser, halogen lamp, light emitting diode (LED) and plasma arc lamp. Sixty extracted teeth were used, prepared by gentle pumicing and coating in an acid-resistant nail-varnish, except for an exposure to a demineralizing solution. Teeth were removed at regular intervals (24, 48 and 72hrs), air-dried and QLF image were taken. Mineral loss, as measured by difference of optical density, was recorded. For dyeenhanced QLF a 0.075% sodium fluorescein dye was applied after QLF examination and mineral loss was recorded. The following result were obtained : 1. Comparing with mean difference of optical density, plasma arc lamp was higher than other light sources in all group (p<0.05). 2. Comparing each group with mean difference of optical density, there was significant different using plasma are lamp and halogen lamp. 3. For use of dye-enhanced QLF, comparing with mean difference of optical density, plasma arc lamp were higher than other light sources in all group(p<0.05). 4. With this model dye-enhanced QLF compared with QLF in optical density, dye-enhanced QLF was higher than QLF in optical density. From the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that plasma light source was more effective compared with other light source for the detection and the quantification of early enamel caries.
The photosynthetic activities in relation to oxygen evolution rates, quantum yield, CO2 uptake rates and room temperature chlorophyll fluorescence were investigated in cotyledons of cucumber seedlings exposed to low temperature (at 4$^{\circ}C$) for 24 h. Light-chilling caused more inhibition on light-saturated maximum oxygen evolution rates, quantum yield, and CO2 uptake rates than dark-chilling did in the cucumber plant. Light-chilling induced more marked increase in Fo and decrease in (Fv)m/Fm than dark-chilling did in the room temperature chlorophyll induction kinetics. The above results affected by chilling in the light are considered to be associated with the partial damage of the reaction center of PS II and the decreased photosynthetic activities. There occurred a large decrease in qQ with little change in qNP in the light-chilling plant. When light- and dark-chilled plants were recovered at room temperature for 24 h and their chlorophyll fluorescences were induced with light doubling technique, light-chilled plants showed more smaller magnitude and rate of fluorescence relaxation than dark-chilled plants. These suggest that light-chilling might cause some alterations in transthylakoid pH formation, and that photosynthetic apparatus of cucumber cotyledons is more susceptible to light-chilling. In the fast fluorescence induction kinetics, FR was decreased by 60% in the light-chilled plants with reference to $25^{\circ}C$ light-grown plants, while the dark-chilled plants showed a decreased rate of only 20% with reference to $25^{\circ}C$ dark-treated plants for 24 h, indicating that cucumber seedling is very sensitive to chilling stress. So, it is certain that chilling injury to the photosynthetic apparatus is strongly dependent on the presence of light in cucumber seedlings.

We report a probe using a single double clad fiber (DCF) for fluorescence spectroscopy. Bidirectional separate transmission for excitation and fluorescence light in a single fiber was implemented. A DCF coupler made by side-polished method could extract none but the collected fluorescence signals propagating in inner cladding mode, thereby diminishing the interference of silica background generated by the excitation in core mode. The experimental results show that the fluorescence spectra of biological tissues obtained using the DCF probes have much less silica background than using a standard multiple-mode fiber.

This study addresses the evaluation on the satisfaction of school illumination quality by applying SERVPERF model after extracting factors affecting school illumination quality. Three types of illumination systems (fluorescence light, general LED light and high color rendition LED light) were tested by students who have used each illumination system. Three factors such as effectiveness, esthetic sense and function were developed for evaluation. Satisfaction evaluation was performed based on applied SERVPERF model by comparing perceived levels. The differences of perceived levels of satisfaction on the illumination systems were analyzed by ANOVA. The results said respondents satisfy only the high color rendition LED light regardless of three factors. Especially, students who experienced high color rendition LED light have strong intention to recommend that illumination system to other schools. They also express their desire to use that system at home. Interestingly, there is not much satisfaction difference between fluorescence light and general LED light.
This experiment used chlorophyll fluorescence techniques to assess the effect of irradiant during leaf development on photoinhibition of photosynthesis in Panax ginseng. Seedlings of p. ginseng were grown in the 91asshouse at four shade levels. The maximum mid-day irradiant in each treatment between emergence (January 4) and completion of the experiment (February 25) was 1220, 485, 235, 125 $\mu$mol/$\textrm{m}^2$/s. To assess the rapidity of photosynthetic readaptation to changes in light levels, fluorescence parameters (Fo, F, Fm, Fm', AF/Fm;, Fv/Fm) were measured for three days before and after transfer of plants (on February 21) from each light treatment into each of the other light treatments. Before transfer, dark adapted values of Fv/Fm in the 1220 (0.699) and 485 (0.739) treatments were different from each other and lower than values in the 235 (0.764) and 125 (0.768) treatments, indicating mild photoinhibition. Patterns of change in F during the day also differed between treatments, with low light treatments tracking irradiant levels, but F in the high light treatment (1220) declined in the morning, presumably due to fluorescence quenching. Although plants grown at high irradiant had relatively low photosynthetic efficiency, relative electron transport rate was greater than in lower irradiant treatments. After transfer, plants adopted the daily pattern of change in F of the treatment to which they were moved with little change in absolute levels of F, except in plants transferred from the highest (1220) to the lowest light level (125), where F increased over the course of the three days following transfer. After plants were transferred, Fm' converged on values similar to those in plants raised in the treatments to which they were moved. Values of Fv/Fm in plants moved from low to high light declined dramatically, but there was no decline in plants from 485 moved to 1220. Values of Pv/Fm in plants that were moved from high light to lower light increased to values above those recorded in plants raised in the lower light treatments. Reductions in quantum efficiency caused by photoinhibition at high irradiant may be more than compensated for by higher electron transport rates, although evidence suggests that under high irradiant this tends to be balanced by reduced leaf area and earlier senescence. Chlorophyll fluorescence techniques appear capable of indicating effects of irradiant induced stress in ginseng, yielding results comparable to those obtained with gas exchange techniques but in less time and with greater replication.
