  • A 3D visual sensing method using a laser structured beam is presented for robotic tracking applications in a simple and reliable manner. A cylindrical shaped laser structured beam is proposed to measure the pose and position of the target surface. When the proposed laser beam intersects on the surface along the target trajectory, an elliptic pattern is generated. Its ellipse parameters can be induced mathematically by the geometrical relationship of the sensor coordinate and target coordinate. The depth and orientation of the target surface are directly determined by the ellipse parameters. In particular, two discontinuous points on the ellipse pattern, induced by seam trajectory, indicate mathematically the 3D direction for robotic tracking. To investigate the performance of this method, experiments with a 6 axis robot system are conducted on two different types of seam trajectories. The results show that this method is very suitable for robot seam tracking applications due to its excellence in accuracy and efficiency.

  • Recently Moire and PMP(Phase Measuring Profilometry) are adopted as a practical methodology for non-contact 3-D measurement of free surface. These methods extract the 3-D informations from the images of the object projected with stripe-pattern light. This paper presents a simple projector generating stripe-pattern light using expensive polygon mirror. In this projector, slit-beam is generated with a Laser diode and a rod lens and the laser diode is switched on/off synchronizing with the rotation of the polygon mirror. So its structure is very simple and light-weighted compared to the existent projection methods using several lenses and it is also easy to change the pitch and the phase of the stripe pattern. Experimental results show that the intensity profile of the stripe pattern can be approximated with sinusoidal curve by reducing the pitch of the stripe pattern.

  • This paper presents a 3D object recognition method for generation of 3D environmental map or obstacle recognition of mobile robots. An active light source projects a stripe pattern of light onto the object surface, while the camera observes the projected pattern from its offset point. The system consists of a laser unit and a camera on a pan/tilt device. The line segment in 2D camera image implies an object surface plane. The scaling, filtering, edge extraction, object extraction and line thinning are used for the enhancement of the light stripe image. We can get faithful depth informations of the object surface from the line segment interpretation. The performance of the proposed method has demonstrated in detail through the experiments for varies type objects. Experimental results show that the method has a good position accuracy, effectively eliminates optical noises in the image, greatly reduces memory requirement, and also greatly cut down the image processing time for the 3D object recognition compared to the conventional object recognition.

  • In this paper, we present a spatial perturbation method to control the optical patterns in semiconductor microresonators in the far-field configuration. We propose a fast all-optical switch which operates at a low light level. The switching beam controls the behavior of output beams with strong intensities. The method has been applied successfully to different optical patterns such as rolls, squares, and hexagons.

  • The fundamentals of light-emitting diode lamp design are presented. The shapes of the reflecting cup and lens employed in LED lamps can be flexibly adjusted, over a relatively large range, by using a few parameters. The analysis of the designed lamps by Monte Carlo photon simulation shows that diverse far-field beam patterns required in various application areas can be achieved.

  • In this study, some issues on 3- dimentional object recognition and pose determination are discussed. The method employs a laser projector which projects a cyliderical light beam on the object plane where it produces a bright ring pattern. The picture is then taken by a T.V camera. The ring pattern is mathmetically the ellipse of which the geometrical parameters have the 3-dimentional feature of the object plane. This paper gives the mathematical aspects of 3-dimentional recognition method and shows experimentally the variations of ellipse parameters as the spatial deviation of the plane object.

  • This paper deals with the measurement theory and technique of linear expansion coefficient for solid material using Michelson interferometer. The Michelson interferometer produces interference fringes by splitting a beam of monochromatic light so that one beam strikes a fixed mirror and the other a movable mirror. When the reflected beams are brought back together, an interference pattern results. Precise distance measurements until a quarter of wave length can be made with the Michelson interferometer by moving the mirror and counting the interference fringes which move by a photo diode. This paper represents the application of Michelson interferometer for measuring infinitesimal length system and shows the measurement method of linear expansion coefficients for various materials like copper, aluminum and iron. the results are good agreement with theoretical value within margin of error for each materials.

  • A real-time holography system using LCD with CCD camera is proposed. In this system, the rainbow hologram is used since it can be reconstructed by white light source. And to record on CCD camera, a kind of in-line holography method is used to widen the width of the fringe pattern. The interference fringe pattern by proposed system is detected with CCD camera and transferred to the LCD A 3-dimensional image is reconstructed when a white light source illuminates the LCD. So it can represent 3 dimensional moving images at real-time. In this paper, to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method, the reconstructed image by holographic film is compared to the same reconstruct image by LCD. In the recording of the interferenced processing, the optimal ratio of the reference and object beam intenstiy is also investigated.

  • The ratio of the period of a diffractive element to the input beam size is a critical parameter in a diffractive beam shaper. We measured and calculated the Fraunhofer diffraction patterns of a periodic hologram with an input beam size similar to the period of the hologram. The measured intensities show very complicated patterns and are strongly dependent upon the center position of the laser beam relative to the hologram. Using a diffraction formula for a periodic hologram, we calculated the diffracted light intensities and fit them to the measured ones. The measured and calculated intensities are in good agreement even when the beam diameter of the incident laser is similar to the period of the hologram. We can therefore use this formula to estimate the output of a periodic beam shaper even under such an extreme condition.

  • A study is described for obtaining real time in situ size and velocity measurements of the spray-droplet using crossed-beam interferometry. The optical arrangement is similar to dual-beam laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV). Droplets passing trough the probe volume scatter light to the collecting lens placed at 90.deg. off-axis angle. The dual-beam light scatter is analyzed by the geometric optics theory to relate the scattered fringe pattern to droplet diameter. The droplet size measurement is based upon the signal visibility. As the system is based on the Doppler effect, a single component of velocity is velocity is extracted concurrent with the size information. The validity of the method is evaluated by comparing its performance to widely accepted but limited technique, the collection method. By using 90.deg. off-axis scatter detection angle, the measurement of the droplet size and velocity distributions, and the local correlations between droplet sizes and velocities in relatively dense spray environments are made possible.
