  • In this paper, we propose an improved reproduction algorithm for a realistic image of the real scene based on the optical characteristics of the light sources and the materials at the lighting environment. This paper is continuation of the previous study to improve the modeling method of the light sources and the materials and apply this to the real rear lamp of automobile. The backward ray tracing method is first used to trace the light ray from a light source, and also considers the physical characteristics of object surfaces and geometric properties of light radiation to estimate accurately the light energy incoming toward to human eyes. For experiments and verification of the proposed method, the simulation results are compared with the measured light stimuli. Accordingly, the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can estimate light energy well and reproduce the visually similar image with a scene incident on a sight of viewer.

  • Light dimming is based on adjusting the voltage which gets to the lamp. Light dimming has been possible for many decades by using adjustable power resistors and adjustable transformers. The power electronics have proceeded quietly since 1960. Between 1960-1970 thyristors and triacs came to market. Using those components it was quite easy to make small and inexpensive light dimmers which have goof efficiency. This type of electronic light dimmers became available after 1970 and are nowadays used in very many locations like homes, restaurants, conference rooms and in stage lighting. But the problem of thyristor dimmer have been that it has poor efficiency and voltage drop. Recently IGBT(Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) control is a new way to do light dimming for improving this problems. IGBT dimmer has many other advantages over traditional thyristor dimmer there are no huge current spikes and EMI caused by turn on Using IGBT it is possible to make the turn-off rate relatively slot to achieve quite operations in terms of EMI and acoustical or incandescent lamp filament noise. For the development of IGBT dimmer. This paper shows the effects of IGBT dimmer compared with thyristor dimmer through a simulation using EMTDC.

  • To estimate daily canopy photosynthesis, accurate estimation of canopy light interception according to a daily solar position is needed. However, this process needs a lot of cost, time, manpower, and difficulty when measuring manually. Various modeling approaches have been applied so far, but it was difficult to accurately estimate light interception by conventional methods. The objective of this study is to estimate the spatial distributions of light interception and photosynthetic rate of paprika with time by using 3D-scanned plant models and optical simulation. Structural models of greenhouse paprika were constructed with a portable 3D scanner. To investigate the change in canopy light interception by surrounding plants, the 3D paprika models were arranged at $1{\times}1$ and $9{\times}9$ isotropic forms with a distance of 60 cm between plants. The light interception was obtained by optical simulation, and the photosynthetic rate was calculated by a rectangular hyperbola model. The spatial distributions of canopy light interception of the 3D paprika model showed different patterns with solar altitude at 9:00, 12:00, and 15:00. The total canopy light interception decreased with an increase of surrounding plants like an arrangement of $9{\times}9$, and the decreasing rate was lowest at 12:00. The canopy photosynthetic rate showed a similar tendency with the canopy light interception, but its decreasing rate was lower than that of the light interception due to the saturation of photosynthetic rate of upper leaves of the plants. In this study, by using the 3D-scanned plant model and optical simulation, it was possible to analyze the light interception and photosynthesis of plant canopy under various conditions, and it can be an effective way to estimate accurate light interception and photosynthesis of plants.

  • The solar cell is a device to convert light energy into electric, which supplies power to the external load when exposed to the incident light. The photocurrent and voltage occurred in the device are significant factors to decide the output power of solar cells. The crystalline silicon solar cell module has photocurrent loss due to light reflections on the glass and EVA(Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). These photocurrent loss would be a hinderance for high-efficiency solar cell module. In this paper, the quantitative analysis for the photocurrent losses in the 300-1200 wavelength region was performed. The simulation method with MATLAB was used to analyze the reflection on a front glass and EVA layer. To investigate the intensity of light that reached solar cells in PV(Photovoltaic) module, the reflectance and transmittance of PV modules was calculated using the Fresnel equations. The simulated photocurrent in each wavelength was compared with the output of real solar cells and the manufactured PV module to evaluate the reliability of simulation. As a result of the simulation, We proved that the optical loss largely occurred in wavelengths between 300 and 400 nm.

  • This research is an experimental study on BIPV Power performance of See-through a-si and Light-through applying external curtain wall. In case of See-through a-si Photovoltaic, appropriateness of facade applying standard($950\;{\times}\;980mm$) large($950\;{\times}\;1960mm$)area photovoltaic was examined. Transparent performance was also investigated through Power simulation according to angles and seasons of See-through a-si and Light-through Photovoltaic so that Power output was surveyed with using designed and manufactured Mock-up. When comparing See-through a-si to Light-through Photovoltaic for simulation Power output on angles based on full south aspect, which the result was that See-through a-si Power output according to Light-through Power output was the highest of 65.5% when applying a 90 degree angle. Monthly accumulated average Power output during winter seasons (December, January and February) applying a vertical plane on full south aspect was analyzed, which results in 66.37W/h of See-through a-si and 139.1 W/h of Light-through. See-through a-si Power output showed 47.7% in comparison with Light-through transparent. Also monthly, hourly average Power efficiency according to solar radiation during winter seasons (December, January and February) was that 4.7% of See-Through a-si and 9.8% of Light-through.

  • For the application of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for general illumination, the development of high power LEDs chips became more essential. For these reasons, recently, modified vertical LEDs have been developed to meet various requirements such as better heat dissipation, higher light extraction and less cost of production. In this research, we investigate the effect of Size and Array of N-GaN contact on operation voltage with new structured padless vertical LED. We changed the size and array of N-electrodes and investigated how they affect the operation voltage of LEDs. We simulated the current crowding and expected operation voltage for different N-contact structures with commercial LED simulator. Also, we fabricated the padless vertical LED chips and measured the electrical property. From the simulation, we could know that the larger size and denser array of n-electrodes could make operation voltage decrease. These results are well in accordance with those measured values of real padless vertical LED chips.

  • In a solar coronagraph, the most important component is an occulter to block the direct light from the disk of the sun. Because the intensity of the solar outer corona is $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-10}$ times of that of the solar disk ($I_{\odot}$), it is necessary to minimize scattering at the optical elements and diffraction at the occulter. Using a Fourier optic simulation and a stray light test, we investigated the performance of a compact coronagraph that uses an external truncated-cone occulter without an internal occulter and Lyot stop. In the simulation, the diffracted light was minimized to the order of $7.6{\times}10^{-10}I_{\odot}$ when the cone angle ${\theta}_c$ was about $0.39^{\circ}$. The performance of the cone occulter was then tested by experiment. The level of the diffracted light reached the order of $6{\times}10^{-9}I_{\odot}$ at ${\theta}_c=0.40^{\circ}$. This is sufficient to observe the outer corona without additional optical elements such as a Lyot stop or inner occulter. We also found the manufacturing tolerance of the cone angle to be $0.05^{\circ}$, the lateral alignment tolerance was $45{\mu}m$, and the angular alignment tolerance was $0.043^{\circ}$. Our results suggest that the physical size of coronagraphs can be shortened significantly by using a cone occulter.

  • The artificial increase in the solar intensity incident on solar cells using lenses or mirrors can allow solar cells to generate equivalent power with a lower cost. In application areas of Fresnel lenses as solar concentrators, several variations of design were devised and tested. Some PV systems still use commercially available flat Fresnel lenses as concentrators. In this study, we designed and optimized flat Fresnel lens and the 'light pipe' to develop 500X concentrated solar PV system. We performed rigorous ray tracing simulation of the flat Fresnel lens and light-pipe. The light-pipe can play imporatant roles of redistributing solar energy at the solar cell and increase the mechanical tolerance so that it can increase the lifetime of the high-concentration solar PV system and decrease the cost of manufacturing. To investigate the sensitivity of the solar power generated by the concentrated solar PV according to the performance of lens and light pipe, we performed raytracing and executed a simulation of electrical performance of the solar cell when it is exposed to the non-uniform illumination. We could conclude that we can generate 95 % or more energy compared with the energy that can be generated by perfectly uniform illumination once the total energy is given the same.

  • Light environment in the school building is one of the most important elements of the plan in order to improve student's ability to learn and the healthy growth. Thus, the window plan of the school building is a great addition to improve environmental-friendly performance through the daylight control. Daylight is highly beneficial for improving the indoor environmental quality and reducing building energy consumption, daylighting applications are scarcely considered, especially during the school building design process, because of lack of previous studies on the light environment of student and complex simulation process. Therefore, daylighting process were performed using ECOTECT, which has various advantage such as easy user interface and simple simulation processes. ECOTECT simulation were performed using weather data. As a result, ECOTECT simulation are performed for daylight autonomy and useful daylight illuminance. Using this data, Window planing is to propose and effective method in the early stages of design.

  • It is obvious that there are plentiful of dust particles in the interplanetary spaces of the Solar System (IDPs), based on micrometeor craters, zodiacal light and direct measurements on the spacecraft. Because of photon drag and planetary perturbations, these particles are continuously falling to the Sun or planets, therefore continuous source of the IDPs are required. We studied the fractional contribution of each type of solar system objects to the IDPs complex through the optical properties of the potential dust sources and the zodiacal light. We found that more than 90% of the IDPs are originated from cometary nuclei. This result is discussed through the comparison with the dynamic simulation, micrometeors mineralogy and near-infrared spectrum of the zodiacal light. In addition, we introduce our new project on the numerical simulation for the dust particles ejected from the cometary nuclei, to verify the conclusion of dominant cometary contribution and its detailed consequences.
