Piled raft foundation is commonly used for structure on deep soft soil deposit rather than end bearing piles to control differential settlement. However, it is still expensive for light weight structures. Wing-wall type foundation has been successfully applied to reduce average settlement for light weight structure. This study will further investigate this type of foundation using bench scale experiments on clay and sand. Numerical analysis and approach method are used to verify load settlement curve of wing-wall foundation on experimentally study. Furthermore, normalized settlement curves are applied to define prediction of settlement on wing-wall foundation. In the result settlement on wing-wall foundation can be effectively done by increasing the length of wall instead of number of walls and equation for calculating average settlement can be derived using normalized load settlement curve.

Use of concrete has undoubtedly become widespread in construction and civil engineering. Sensors are used to add functional characteristics to concrete. Self-diagnosis concrete is also being developed. The thermal protector used in the study is a sensor using the linear expansion and cubical expansion of metal. The LED(Light Emitting Diode) is a phototransistor type, and to secure high-sensitivity light, the prices of these sensors are low. Rising temperatures of concrete elements can be predicted from LED of the external virtual beam due to operation of thermal protector sensors of concrete beam caused by fire load on the concrete specimen. In this study, the development of fire-diagnosis concrete using composite sensors are the fundamental study for damage detection using simply measurements.

Recently, the demonstration and research on the power transmission using high voltage DC such as HVDC(High Voltage DC), Smart Grid, DC transmission and distribution have been actively conducted. In order to control the power converter in high-voltage DC power transmission system, SMPS(Switching Modulation Power Supply) for power converter control using high-voltage DC input is essential. However, the demand for high-pressure SMPS is still low, so the development is not enough. In the low-output SMPS using the high-voltage input, it is difficult to achieve high efficiency due to the switching transient loss especially at light load. In this paper, we propose a new switching scheme for high power SMPS control for low output power. The proposed method can provide better efficiency increase effect in the light load region compared to the existing PWM method. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, a 40 W SMPS for HVDC MMC(Modulation Multi-level Converter) was designed and verified by simulation.

Naval surface ships and submarines could be exposed to non-contact underwater explosion(UNDEX) environment. Equipment installed on the ships and submarines could be damaged by shock load generated by UNDEX environment. Therefore, shock survivability of equipment generally evaluated by shock tests. Ground based shock test machine such as Light weight shock test machine(LVSM) is developed to simulate shock load caused by UNDEX environment. In this study, linear dynamic model of LVSM is proposed and evaluated to improve shock test design procedure. Parameters of the model are decided by optimizing time domain response compared to zero payload experiment. Proposed model is verified by comparing simulation results and test results of maximum payload experiment. Finally, shock test design using the model is described for various test equipment weight.

In our daily lives, we engage in a variety of tasks that rely on our senses, such as seeing. Blindness is the absence of the sense of vision. According to the World Health Organization, 2.2 billion people worldwide suffer from various forms of vision impairment. Unfortunately, blind people face a variety of indoor and outdoor challenges on a daily basis, limiting their mobility and preventing them from engaging in other activities. Blind people are very vulnerable to a variety of hazards, including falls. Various barriers, such as stairs, can cause a fall. The Internet of Things (IoT) is used to track falls and send a warning message to the blind caretakers. One of the gaps in the previous works is that they were unable to differentiate between falls true and false. Treating false falls as true falls results in many false alarms being sent to the blind caretakers and thus, they may reject the IoT system. As a means of bridging this chasm, this paper proposes an intelligent shoe that is able to precisely distinguish between false and true falls based on three sensors, namely, the load scale sensor, the light sensor, and the Flex sensor. The proposed IoT system is tested in an indoor environment for various scenarios of falls using four models of machine learning. The results from our system showed an accuracy of 0.96%. Compared to the state-of-the-art, our system is simpler and more accurate since it avoids sending false alarms to the blind caretakers.

Corrosion loss of the shell plates of the steel vessels are measured and analyzed on the thirty cargo vessels and fifteen lumber carriers of which nationality belong to Korea. Thickness of the shell plates were determined at the every observed points set along the fore and aft line and perpendicular to it, by use of the ultrasonic thickness meter. Difference of the thickness between the original and the determined shell plates are given as the corrosion loss at the present age. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. On the cargo vessels, (1) The total mean of the corrosion loss is greatest at the light waterline, in every age class of the vessels. (2) The total mean of the corrosion loss on the fore and aft line shows little difference, even though it is slightly greater at the fore part, in every age class of the vessels. (3) Corrosion loss along the perpendicular line grows greater in the order of freeboard, load waterline, upper bilge line and light waterline, within the 16 of the age of the observed vessels. Its order varies to freeboard, upper bilge line, load waterline and light waterline in the age of 35. Corrosion loss at the light waterline and load waterline, in the age of 35, shows 3 times of it at the freeboard, and it at the upper bildge line shows twice of it at the freeboard. The fact significates the corrosion grows rapidly around the waterline. 2. On the lumber carriers, (1) The total mean of the corrosion loss is greatest at the upper bilge line, in the every age class of the vessels. (2) Total mean of the corrosion loss on the fore and aft line shows little difference, even though it is slightly greater at the fore part, in every age class of the vessels. (3) Corrosion loss along the perpendicular line is least at the freeboard and greatest at the upper bilge line, and its value at the upper bilge line shows twice of it at the freeboard. 3. The total mean of the corrosion loss of the lumber carriers shows almost twice of the cargo vessels.

The corrosion loss of the shell plates and the bulkead plates of the oil tankers, nationalities of which belong to korea are determined and analyzed. The thickness of the plates are determined by use of the ultrasonic thickness meters at the check points set along the fore and aft line and the perpendicular to it. Difference between the original thickness and the determined one are given as the corrosion loss at the present age. 1. On the shell plates (1) The total mean of the corrosion loss shows the greatest value on the load water line in every age classes of the vessels. (2) The total mean of the corrosion loss on the fore and aft line shows little difference, even though it is slightly greater at the fore part, in every age classes of the vessels. (3) The corrosion loss along the perpendicular grows greater in the order of upper bilge line, light water line, freeboard line and load water line at 16 ages of the vessels, and the loss changes in the order of light water line, upper bilge line, freeboard line and load water line at 20 ages of the vessels. (4) The total mean of the corrosion loss along the light water line and upper and lower water line shows the greatest value on the fore part. That along the freeboard line and the load water line shows the greatest value on the midship part and on the after part, respectively. 2. On the bulkhead plates (1) The total mean of the corrosion loss shows the greatest value on the top part at the every age classes of the vessels. (2)The corrosion loss along the perpendicular grows greater in the order of the lower, center and upper part at every age classes of the vessels. (3) The total mean of the corrosion loss at the top part grows greater in the order of the transverse bulkhead of the side oil tank, that of center oil tank, longitudinal bulkhead of center oil tank, and transverse bulkhead of side water tank at the 20 ages of the vessels.

This paper presents the research results of a light weight through topology optimization and structural safety evaluation through structural analysis of a pressure system structure installed in an off-shore plant. Conducting a structure design according to the wind load and the dynamic load at sea in addition to a self-load and structure stability evaluation are very important for structures installed in off-shore plants. In this study, the wind and dynamic load conditions according to the DNV classification rule was applied to the analysis. The topology optimization method was applied to the structure to obtain a lightweight shape. Phase optimization analysis confirmed the stress concentration portion. Topology optimization analysis takes the shape by removing unnecessary elements in the design that have been designed to form a rib shape. Based on the analysis results about the light weight optimal shape, a safety evaluation through structural analysis and suitability of the shape was conducted. This study suggests a design and safety evaluation of an off-shore plant structure that is difficult for structural safety evaluations using an actual test.
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of weight of load and time on the physical workload of repetitive upper-limb tasks with handling light weight loads using EMG and perceived discomfort, and to investigate the relationship between EMG and perceived discomfort for those repetitive tasks of moving light weight loads. Background: Repetitive upper-limb motion is known as one of the main risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders, and a lot of repetitive tasks are carried out while handling light weight loads in the industry. In evaluating the workload of repetitive tasks handling light weight loads, EMG and perceived discomfort can be used, though their relationship in those work conditions are not much investigated. Method: A laboratory experiment with 18 healthy males were conducted to record EMG signals from 5 muscle sites of the right arm and shoulder and rate perceived discomforts for the body parts and the whole body while carrying out repetitive materials-handling tasks for 52min. The subjects were divided into 3 groups which handled the loads of 1kg, 2kg and 3kg, respectively. ANOVAs were conducted to analyze the effects of the weight and time on RMS of EMG amplitude (normalized RMS: NRMS), median frequency of power spectrum of EMG (normalized MDF: NMDF) and perceived discomfort. The correlations between NRMS and NMDF and perceived discomfort were also analyzed. Results: Statistically significant muscular fatigue effects were not found from NRMS and NMDF in most muscles, while there were significant increases of discomfort as the task time elapsed. It was shown that there were an increasing trend of the muscular activity as the weight of load increased and a decreasing trend of median frequency of EMG of upper and lower arms as time elapsed. It was found that there were significant negative correlations between NMDFs from the lower arm and discomfort ratings, though the relationships were weak. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the working conditions adopted in this study were not enough to induce muscular fatigue, while there was significant increase in perceived discomfort. A further study is necessary to integrate the objective and subjective measures for more reliable and sensitive evaluation of workload of repetitive tasks of handling light weight loads. Application: This study can be used as a basic study for the evaluation of workload of repetitive tasks handling light weight loads.
In a sender-initiated load redistribution algorithm, a sender(overloaded processor) continues to send unnecessary request messages for load transfer until a receiver(underloaded processor) is found while the system load is heavy. In a receiver-initiated load redistribution algorithm, a receiver continues to send unnecessary request messages for load acquisition until a sender is found while the system load is light. Therefore, it yields many problems such as low CPU utilization and system throughput because of inefficient inter-processor communications in this environment. This paper presents an approach based on genetic algorithm(GA) for adaptive load sharing in distributed systems. In this scheme, the processors to which the requests are sent off are determined by the proposed GA to decrease unnecessary request messages.
