  • This study investigated the effects of perceived ageism on appearance related quality of life through appearance satisfaction among older Korean women. Testing the proposed model showed associations among variables and the mediating effects of appearance satisfaction in the relationship between perceived ageism and appearance related psychological and social quality of life. Structural equation modeling analyses upheld the proposed model for 221 women aged 60 and over. The results revealed that older women's perception of ageism negatively influenced appearance satisfaction that subsequently affected perceived levels of both psychological and social quality of life in a negative direction. The direct effects of perceived ageism on both psychological and social quality of life were not found; however, the indirect effects of perceived ageism on these two variables through appearance satisfaction were found significant and negative. This indicated a fully mediating effect of appearance satisfaction in the relationships. The results of this study highlight that perceptions of ageism and its association with body image should be considered to understand the overall quality of life among older women.

  • This study investigated the causal relationships among the elderly, looking at social participation, depression, self-reported health, and life satisfaction. It was especially focused on the mediating effects of depression and self-reported health on the relationship between social participation and life satisfaction. From the 2006 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging, data for 4,155 elderly over age 65 was analyzed with structural equations modeling with Amos 7.0 and sobel test. Major findings were as follows. First, social participation of the elderly has a negative influence on depression and a positive influence on self-reported health and life satisfaction. Second, self-reported health has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between social participation and life satisfaction. Third, the direct effect of depression on life satisfaction was not statistically significant, while the direct effect of social participation was significant. Therefore, depression was not proved as a significant mediator. This study tested the effects of social participation on depression, self-reported health, and life satisfaction empirically and confirmed the partial mediating model, in which social participation improves the elderly's self-reported health, which in turn improves the elderly's life satisfaction. These results suggest the importance of an integrated approach for the healthy and successful aging and the diverse types of social participation in an elderly person's quality of life.

Methods : Twenty-one stroke patients who were divided into an experimental group (n=10) and a control group (n=11), participated in this study from July 2019 to October 2019. Life satisfaction changes were measured using the Life satisfaction scale. Self-esteem changes were measured using the Self-esteem scale. Results : First, comparison between pre and post intervention showed a statistically significant difference in life satisfaction and self-esteem (p<.05). Second, comparison between post intervention groups showed a statistically significant difference in life satisfaction and self-esteem (p<.05). Conclusion : Based on the results from this study, we found that time-use intervention has a positive impact on life satisfaction and self-esteem. • Purpose: This study determined acculturative stress' effect on the life satisfaction of multicultural adolescents based on Roy's Adaptation Model and some earlier studies. Further, it examined the sequential multiple mediating effects of bicultural acceptance attitude, self-esteem, and social withdrawal on life satisfaction. Methods: Participants included 1,163 multicultural adolescents who participated in the sixth Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study. A hypothesis test was conducted using Hayes' Process Macro Model 81. Results: Life satisfaction increased with a decline in acculturative stress. Each of bicultural acceptance attitude, self-esteem, and social withdrawal had a single mediating effect on the relationship between acculturative stress and life satisfaction in multicultural adolescents. The sequential multiple mediating effects of bicultural acceptance attitude and self-esteem were confirmed significant after their impact on the relationship between acculturative stress and life satisfaction was analyzed. Bicultural acceptance attitude and social withdrawal were found to have a significant sequential multiple mediating effect on the relationship, as well. Conclusion: This study's results demonstrate that acculturative stress reduction is critical to improving multicultural adolescents' life satisfaction. Bicultural acceptance attitude, self-esteem, and social withdrawal have a single mediating or sequential multiple mediating effect on the relationship between multicultural adolescents' acculturative stress and life satisfaction. The findings, which highlight mediating effects, indicate that by increasing bicultural acceptance attitude and self-esteem, and reducing social withdrawal, multicultural adolescents' life satisfaction can be improved.

  • This paper has two purposes. the one was to find empirical patterns of rural and urban elderly's leisure activities, and the other was to test the effects of elderly's leisure activities on life satisfaction. the data were collected for 319 respondents aged over 50s who resided in Jeonbuk rural and urban areas. Through exploratory factor analysis, we found ten patterns of leisure activities. In addition, we conducted multiple regression analysis to test net effects of those leisure activities on life satisfaction. the results indicate that even no one pattern of leisure activities significantly influences the elderly's life satisfaction, controlling for social correlates (consisted of social structural, family relationship, personality, and socio-economic demographic variables). Rather, the respondent's level of health, level of economic status, and positive relationship with adult children have significant net effects on respondent's life satisfaction. This result suggests that the positive relationship between leisure activities and life satisfaction in the existing empirical studies might be spurious. We recommend that the further studies should conduct survey and analyze the data for affluent elderly residing in more urbanized areas.
