  • The Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) is a state-approved statistical survey that has been conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI) every 3 years since 2006 to monitor changes in the working conditions of Koreans. This cross-sectional national survey involves a sample of 50,000 employed people aged 15 or older. KWCS measures various working conditions through > 130 survey questions, including questions regarding working hours, labor intensity, work-life balance, degree of exposure to risk factors, and subjective health status. Professional survey interviewers visit households and conduct face to face interviews. KWCS provides data and statistics for occupational safety and health polices and research in Korea. Furthermore, OSHRI holds academic conferences every year, awards high-quality academic papers, and supports researchers using data. Microdata is publicly available through the OSHRI website (https://oshri.kosha.or.kr).

  • The microorganisms that live under extreme conditions on Earth are known as extremophiles. They possess an extraordinary capability to endure extreme conditions, including salinity, temperature variations, pH, desiccation, and nutrient scarcity, among others. These organisms, including a vast array of bacteria, eukarya, and archaea, have evolved specialized structural and functional adaptations that make them capable of thriving in extremely selective environments in such a way that they showcase remarkable adaptations that push the limits of what we consider habitable. This capability results in valuable compounds with great potential for developing novel pharmaceuticals and biotechnological innovations. The present review paper aims to summarize current knowledge on the diversity of extremophilic microorganisms and the adaptive strategies employed to face such a range of extreme conditions. Particular attention will be given to temperature, salinity, pH, and desiccation adaptation. The review also highlights their potential applications, specifically focusing on pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications.

Optimization of Extraction Conditions for Bakkenolide B from the Leaves of Petasites japonicus by Using Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석법에 의한 머위(Petasites japonicus)의 bakkenolide B추출공정 최적화)

  • Optimal conditions for extraction of bakkenolide B from Petasites japonicus leaves were determined by using response surface methodology. A second-order Box-Behnken design representing three extraction temperatures (80, 100, $120^{\circ}C$), three extraction times (30, 45, 60 min), and three solvent pH's (5, 7, 9) was executed. The efficiency of the extraction conditions was defined using the ${\beta}$-hexosamidase assay by comparing both the bakkenolide B content and its anti-allergic activity expressed as extract inhibition on degranulation. The response surface plot described for the bakkenolide B content showed that the maximum content was predicted as 121.6 ${\mu}g/g$ with extraction conditions of $127.1^{\circ}C$, 46.6 min, and pH 7.7. Extraction temperature and time were important factors in determining bakkenolide B content. Using regression analysis, correlation between the inhibition effect of mast cell degranulation and bakkenolide B content was found to be low.

  • Using a low viscosity synthetic traction oil and a low viscosity mineral oil with nearly equal viscosity grade of ISO VG 32, the effect of kind of oil on the fatigue life of bearing steel rollers was examined. A pair of rollers finished the contact surfaces to a mirror-like condition were driven under rolling with sliding conditions of s = -3.2% and a maximum Hertzian stress in the range of $P_H=2.8GPa{\sim}4.0GPa$ was applied in point contact condition. As a result of experiments, the fatigue life with a mineral oil was longer than that with a traction oil under higher stress conditions above $P_H=3.4GPa$. Based on the numerical calculation results of the thermal EHL which simulates the present experiment, the authors discuss the reason why such a difference in the fatigue life comes out.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the essence of hospital life concerning discharge from rehabilitation facility as defined by clients with complete quadriplegia. Method: This was a qualitative research using Giorgi's descriptive phenomenology. Four participants with complete quadriplegia were participated. Results: The lived experience of discharge from rehabilitation facility among clients with complete quadriplegia was structured by 10 components and was defined as a life event which those patients felt fears and worries to leave the therapeutic environment and to return to their community with various changes due to their disability. During their hospital stay, the patients with quadriplegia were concerning to prepare proper living conditions and their health conditions so that they could keep their life independent and worthy. They also cherished a hope for cure for their cervical injury even at the moment of discharge. Conclusion: This study suggests developing a discharge program which relieves the clients' emotional burden for discharge from inpatient rehabilitation facility and helps them to take an active role in preparing for returning to their daily life.

  • Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthase catalyzed the last enzymic step to synthesize the intracellular PHB of Rhodobacter sphaeroides. No PHB was detected when the phbC coding for PhB synthase was interrupted, and its expression was regulated at the level of transcription. The cellular PHB content increased about four- to six-fold during the growth transition from the exponential to the early stationary phase under both aerobic and photoheterotrophic conditions. The PHB content during the aerobic growth seemed to be determined by the PhB synthase activity. However, the PHB synthase activity of photoheterotrophically grown cells did not correlate with the PhB content, suggesting a photoheterotrophic regulation different from the aerobic control. Thus, the PHB content of R. sphaeroides was regulated at the transcription level only under aerobic conditions.

  • Many generating stations in korea are 25 years or more old, and are nearing the end of their planned life. Financial conditions and Site, Environment problems have made approval for construction of new stations increasingly difficult, and extending the life of an existing older plant may be a palatable alternative.   • Knitwears are originated earlier than textiles in human beings life. And then human beings life. And then human beings have been continuously developing as life patterns of human beings are becoming various and society is rapidly changing. Recently , changing life styles of the consumer emphasize the importance of the high quality , individuality , variety , and activity of knitwears. In this study , university women and housewives livings in Seoul have been surveyed in the cause of analyzing of the consumer's actual conditions. And eight brands of th specialized knit enterprises also have been surveyed, though it is imperfect . The purpose of this study lies in giving a help to the rational clothing habits of consumer and presenting some courses for aiming of korean knit industry. I made use of percentage and $x^2$-test for the analysis of the data and analyzed the contents of the question papers.
