  • With high interest in linked data, there are various attempts to accommodate the linked data model in cataloging process. This study intends to discuss how to adopt and make the best use of linked data based bibliographic framework in order to improve the quality of library catalogs and to enhance library services in Korean libraries. To the end, this study focuses on (1) discussion of the meaning of linked data from the library cataloging perspective, (2) tracking best practices for implementing and operating linked data among North American and Europe libraries and bibliographic networks (in detail, constructing various types of ontology, developing linked data model including BIBFRAME and OCLC linked model, and improving retrieval service and interface), and finally (3) exploring problems and the anticipated challenges to transition to the linked data model in Korea. The data for discussion were collected from literature review and case study.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of user-contributed reviews for the Next Generation Library Catalogs, and the potential impact of user reviews available from the external sources, including Amazon.com and GoodReads.com. During the period of February 16th through April 4th, 2012, the number of holding libraries and user-contributed reviews, tags and reading lists of ten selected books were examined from the WorldCat. Also the user-contributed reviews for the same books available from Amazon.com and GoodReads.com were examined, and a case of reviews for one book was analyzed. The result shows that only a few users participated in the WorldCat, and user-contributed reviews were rarely used, when compared with tags or reading lists. Several hundred to thousand user-contributed reviews for the same books were available from Amazon.com and GoodReads.com directly linked with bibliographic records. A case of one book from Amazon.com reveals the possibility of distorting the function of user-contribution. With the introduction of the function of user-contribution, it is expected that its growth rate should be carefully observed and its potential impact on users should be thoroughly and systematically analyzed in the near future.

  • Library catalogs are as a tool in order to satisfy the information needs of user but currently user's need is more complex and more diverse. Therefore, currently library catalogs do not meet the user's need and have some limitations. One of the ways for solving this problem will provide for the table of contents about monography. However recently, table of contents about books is builded individual library itself so the redundancy issue is pointed to waste of the cost of materials and human resources. Therefore, it should establish a standardized table of contents information DB and each of the related institutions can collaborate and share ways to be provided to take advantage of the table of contents. In order to this, central institutions should be provided a standardized way of building DB, provided conversion program, and mutual sharing principles associated with the building of table of contents DB.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the characteristics of online catalogs' interface of elementary school libraries, and to propose how to design user-friendly interfaces. The online catalogs of elementary school libraries are categorized into 6 types. Such topics as the features of search methods, the record display formats, the terminology usage, and the special features of the 6 types are discussed. Some shortcomings are examined and how to improve them is suggested.

  • Many have been concerned with the entry of serials in cataloging. Thouzh they believc the form of AACR 6 should be revised, the agreement was not yet reached among them. Whercas some librarians advocate no different entry in cataioging between monographs and serials, some agree that all serials are to be entered under its title. Main arguments are on the concepts of "corporate authorship" and "generic titlc". On account of disagreemefit on these concepts, there appear different ways 9T serials entry in various catalogs or bibliogaphies. Being not clearly defined the concept of "corporate authorship" in Korcan Cltaloging Rules, main cntry of a scrial was quite different either in a few national bibliographies or some universities' catalogs in T a e g ~C ity. In consideration 01 the incompleteness and changing authorship or diffused riuthorship of serials, it is desirable to revise and simplif1, - our czttaloging rules as to all the serials are to be entered under its titlc. This would be in ac.:ord +;ith International Stand~rdso n serials, eg. ISDS and ISBD(S). When a generic term is included in a title, it will not be sn important groblcm as the title mould be usi~ally made up in the form of "corporate name+gcncric term". • This study was intended to investigate the quality control in technical services outsourcing in academic libraries. For this purpose, investigated related papers and the experience of outsourced technical services in three academic libraries. Data from senior librarians charged with revision of catalogs are gathered. Issues of catalogs production and quality control are explored and statistics of outsourcing is analysed. Quality control is a major factor of the success of technical services outsourcing operation. The some suggestions in order to enhance quality of vendor-supplied cataloging are presented.

  • This paper is a study of the organization and use of theses collections in university libraries of Korea. A questionnaire consisted of 31 questions on 6 items was sent to 44 university libraries of which 40 libraries responded. Results of the study can be summarized as follows: 1. Figures concerning registration of theses can be tabulated as follows. 2. In differentiation of oriental and occidental theses, 20 libraries (50%) depend on the basis of the text language. 3. Thirty-four libraries (85%) classify the theses and 27 (80%) of them use the same tables with book classification schedules. For classification level, 17 libraries (48.6%) classify them in section numbers whereas 13 (37.1%) in sub-sections. 4. Catalog or index cards of theses are made in 35 libraries (87.5%) of which 20 libraries are using the second level of bibliographic description. 5. Roman alphabets in a title are described a such 27 libraries (67.5%). 6. Most of respondents are preparing author, title and classified catalog cards for users. The research reveals that only 8 libraries are giving subject headings to the theses. 7. Twenty-three libraries (63.9%) have theses catalogs in separation from their book catalogs. 8. Most helpful bibliographic elements in an entry for users are reported to be author, title, date and notes. In general, theses collections have many different features in various aspects compared with book materials. Therefore it is desirable to process the former differently with the latter. Firstly, it would be more convenient to register theses on the different register from the book register. Secondly, minute classification of theses would be necessary for their users. thirdly, text language is the common basis of discriminating oriental materials and occidental ones. Fourthly, a simple catalog would be quite good enough to use theses collection, for most helpful elements in an entry are limited to author, title, date and notes. Fifthly, it is strongly recommendable to transcribe all the roman alphabets on the titles into Korean alphabets. Sixthly, the research revealed that our library would needs to develop subject heading work which is for behind other library works.

  • This study examined the main concepts of SOA and Web Services, and conducted technical analysis of major Web Services protocols such as SOAP, REST, SRW/U, and OAI-PMH that realize SOA, and suggested examples of SOAP and REST based Web Services establishments in foreign and domestic libraries respectively. In addition, it introduced application examples of Library 2.0 using Web 2.0 technology in foreign and domestic libraries and suggested how to apply SOA based Web Services protocol in Library 2.0. Finally, it proposed how to put Library 2.0 into practice applying meta-searching system integrating library OPAC, online bookstores, web portal sites and library union catalogs using REST based Open API.

  • One of the major problems on the design of an online database for machine readable data file is on the implementation of MARC format for communication with the Library of Congress or OCLC. Most of the cataloging data to make manual card catalogs are stored on magnetic tapes based on the MARC format at LC or OCLC and are sent to local libraries. Therefore, local libraries can avoid the expensive process of cataloging for the books they own. Instead, they can retrieve the necessary cataloging information from the tape and print out manual card catalogs. A problem with MARC is that it is not designed for databases, but for portability to be read at any type of computer. Therfore, it is not practical to use the format on the development of an online database as long as the database is developed in conjunction with a commercial powerful database package. In this paper a possible methodology to resolve the conflicts between the objective of DBMS and MARC is discussed. It is to satisfy the requirements from a commercial DBMS while leaving a room for MARC to communicate with LC and OCLC.
