  • In order to re-activation of shared cataloging, spirit of community and cooperation are most needed. But proper compensation about contribution would motivate. Through representing basic data for making compensation policy about university library's share cataloging system, this study analyzes activities about contribution and utilization of participated libraries. To put it concretely, this study considers overall status of contribution and utilization through descriptive statistics and analyzes relationship between both sides. Furthermore through clustering participating library, this study brightened the libraries that ought to be compensated and who would be need to be specially rewarded. And draw the libraries that need to be paid and need to be led for active participation of shared cataloging.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current and overall situation of cataloging ecosystem focusing on the interrelationship between traditional library and social cataloging site cataloging. For this, an extensive research and analysis was conducted concerning comparative analysis on cataloging rules of the library and social cataloging. As a result, not only the similarity and difference but also interrelationship between library and social cataloging was analyzed in detail. In addition, the characteristics of the cataloging rules were analyzed by the stage of cataloging in the library and the social cataloging environment. This study provides implications for mutual understanding and cooperation between library and social cataloging. The result may have significant meaning in prospecting cataloging ecosystem and planning further study on facilitating interaction and leading knowledge organization development.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of OPAC displays of the National Library of Korea and the Library of Congress. based on the 'OPAC Display Guidelines(Draft)' published by IFLA. Discussed are such topics as a basic search process and the headings list, a brief display and the arrangement of bibliographic records, a brief record and a full record, use of terms and labels. link between records, and organization of screens for the OPAC display. It is strongly suggested that when compared with the LC's OPAC, the OPAC display of the National Library of Korea should be much improved by following the recommendations of the 'OPAC Display Guidelines(Draft)'.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of OPAC displays and search interfaces for children. The OPACS of Cheongju Miracle Library, Nowon Children's Library in Seoul. Los Angeles Public Library in the U.S.A. and HelMet Library System in Finland are examined on the basis of 'OPAC Display Guidelines(Draft)' published by IFLA and Nielsen's 'User Interface Design Heuristics'. Discussed are such topics as the features of basic and detailed search screens. the brief display of search results. the arrangement and full display of bibliographic records, and the displays for zero-results and large retrieval sets. The OPAC displays of Cheongju Miracle Library and Nowon Children' Library are not particularly designed to serve children which are their primary users. The OPAC displays for children of LAPL and HelMet Library System are rather simplified and customized to represent specifically the needs and information seeking behavior of children.

  • The RAK has in general adopted the provisions of the paris principles to a far greater extent than many other cataloguing codes. And the analyses confirm that the determination of the main entries in German cataloging rules is a rather complex process and one which can result in inconsistent, arbitrary decisions. And the selection of the main entry requires a considerable amount of decision making which is time-consuming and costly. From the point of view of computers, all entries are equal as points of retrieval. In light of the above considerations the most important recommendation to be made is that the main entry principle be abandoned from cataloging theory and practice and be replaced by the title entry. It would eliminate the need for personal judgments required by the present rule. In so doing, it would bring uniformity and Standardization to cataloging practice. Use of the title entry would reduce the time and effort spent on the selection of the main entry which serves no important purpose in the catalog. Therefore title entry is more developed finding device than author entry in direct approach for document retrieval.

  • The proper evaluation of reference services requires qualitative approach as well as quantitative one. The quality of a reference service can be evaluated by how promptly and accurately a librarian responds to the user's questions and also by how much the user is satisfied with the librarian's overall performance in providing the answer. In this study, the reference service of an university library was evaluated by the following procedure : 1. Identification of a group of the most frequently referred Korean government publications through two pre-tests of user surveys. 2. Preparation of 130 questions of bibliographic and factual type from the above publications. 3. Selection of 30 questions which can be answered from the collection of the evaluated library. 4. Mimic requests of reference service by 5 proxies trained on the unobtrusive test method with 30 questions asked at various times of the day and on various days of the week during a period of 5 months. 5. Drawing up of response sheets (by proxies) with descriptive comments on library staffs' question administration, response, attitude, etc. 6. Preparation and coding of data tabulation sheets and final analysis. The conclusions of this study are as follows : 1. The user serveys showed that needs for the library service for government publications were great. The $80\%$ of the government publications users were visiting more than two organizations for access to information and the $37\%$ were getting information directly from the publishers. 2. The librarians of the evaluated library could give correct answers to $53\%$ of 30 (bibliographic and factual) guestions. 3. The correctness of answer was independent of the length of the time spent the librarians. The librarians' grasp of the questions and direction of approach determined the success or failure of the service. 4. The librarians relied too much on the reference library catalog which doesn't include many of the government publications of their own collection. 5. The $79\%$ of the failure of the service were due to the librarians' lack of knowledge as to the information source for government publications and the unsystematic method of approach to it.

  • Social network analysis was performed on 545 job descriptions in 32 university libraries in Seoul, and drew the job distribution and their relations. Furthermore, for finding the differences according to scale of libraries, this study performed secondary analysis by dividing them two groups. Results show that large scale library show lower density and loose connectivity than small scale library. And while jobs of small scale library were clustered 3 groups, large scale university cluster 4 groups containing 1 technical job and 3 diverse user services. And the jobs that has high specificity, such as catalog or classification, shows high degree centrality in the case of small scale library. Whereas in large scale library they show lower degree centrality, so it can be said that these jobs were performed somewhat independently in large scale libraries.
