The effect of tube diameter on heat transfer characteristics of absorber in absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been investigated by experimental study to develop a high performance and compact absorber. A system Includes a tube absorber, a generator, solution distribution system and cooling water system was set up. The diameter of the heat exchanger tube inside absorber was changed from 15.88mm to 12.7mm and 9.52mm. The experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number and heat flux increase as solution flow rate and cooling water flow rate increase. The heat transfer performance increases as tube diameter decreases. Among three different tube diameters, the smallest tube diameter 9.52mm has highest heat transfer performance. A comparison of the heat transfer coefficient obtained by the present study with those of previous experimental results showed good overall agreement.
This paper concerns the study of absorption refrigeration and heat pump cycle to use sewage. Simulation analysis on the double-effect absorption refrigeration cycle with parallel and two-stage heat pump cycle has been performed. The working fluid is Lithium Bromide and water solution. The absorption refrigeration cycle use sewage as a cooling water for the absorber and condenser, and absorption refrigeration cycle does that as a chilled water for the evaporator of the first stage cycle. And the two-stage cycle consists of coupling double-effect with parallel and single effect cycle so that the first stage absorber and condenser produces heating water to evaporate refrigerant in the evaporator of the second stage. The effects of operating variables such as a absorber temperature on the coefficient of performance have been studied for absorption refrigeration and heat pump cycle.

An experimental study of the absorption process of water vapor into lithium bromide solution was performed. For the purpose of development of high performance absorption chiller-heater utilizing Lithium Bromide solution as working fluid, the absorber is the most effective to improve the performance of an absorber because it requires the largest heat transfer area in an absorption chiller-heater system. This paper introduces bare tube and inner ribbed notched fin tube for the absorber of absorption chiller-heaters. Inner ribbed notched fin tube has about 10∼20% higher heat and mass transfer performance than bare tube conventionally used in absorbers and the it is expected to perform high heat and mass transfer. This paper will provide important information on the selection of absorber tubes in commercial absorption chill-heaters.
In order to utilize the condensation heat of refrigerants in condenser on the absorption chiller system, the solution cooled condenser (SCC) was proposed using the weak solution of absorber as a cooling medium. The increase of COP with the increase of UA of the solution cooled condenser was approximately 0.009 in maximum with single effect one, and is about maximum 0.008 in occasion of double effect one with series flow compared to that without. In the case of heat exchanger, effectiveness is about 0.85, it's increments are 0.008 and 0.0072, respectively. And solution cooled condenser is more effective device in the single effect absorption system than double effect system for the principle of operation. On the other hand, as the solution split ratio increases when the value of UA is fixed, COP is increased and as the solution split ratio increases when the value of UA is fixed, COP is increased. If the flow rate of cooling water or the value of UA is reduced in order to increases the heat recovery of solution cooled condenser, heat recovery of solution cooled condenser is increased a little but COP is decreased as the system pressure is increased.
The major irreversibilities in absorption chillers are associated with the transfer of heat into and out from the machine and irreversible process inside the machine. By modeling only external irreversibilities(endo-reversible), a model was formulated to predict the ideal performance of a single-effect absorption chiller. Its actual performance including both external and internal irreversibilities was calculated with a in-house simulation program. The optimization of heat transfer area distribution was performed for both endo-reversible cycle and actual cycle. The equation of endo-reversible modeling was found to give about 2times higher cooling capacity than the simulation program. At optimal distribution, it was found that heat transfer area of the evaporator was about 30% of total area, that of the generator was 20%, and the rest 50% was for the absorber and condenser. The system COP for endo-reversible cycle was slightly higher than that for actual cycle. In the case of LiBr-water single-effect absorption chiller, the maximum cooling capacity was obtained near the condition that LMTD is same at all heat exchangers.
Condensation heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally when a water vapor is condensed on the outside of a horizontal copper tube in a condenser. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a LiBr-water absorption system. Hydrophilic surface modification was performed to increase the wettability on the copper tube. The optimum hydrophilic treatment condition using acethylene and nitrogen as reaction gas is also studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that the optimum reaction gas ratio of acethylene to nitrogen for hydrophilic surface modification was found to be 7 : 3 for the best condensation heat transfer. In the wide ranges of coolant inlet temperatures, and coolant mass flow rates, both the condensation heat transfer rate and the condensation heat transfer coefficient of a hydrophilic copper tube are increased substantially, compared with those of a conventional copper tube used in a condenser. It is also found that the condensation heat transfer enhancement by the hydrophilic surface modification still emains even after a hundred cycles of wet/dry processes.
The absorption of vapor involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the vapor/liquid system. In this paper, a numerical study for vapor absorption process into LIBr-H$_2$O solution film flowing over helical absorber has been carried out. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the helical tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. The effects of operating conditions, such as the cooling water temperature. the system pressure, the film Reynolds number and the solution inlet concentration have been investigated in view of the absorption mass flux and the total absorption mass flux and the total absorption rate. The results for the temperature and concentration profiles, as well as the local absorption mass flux at the helical absorber are presented. It is shown that solution inlet concentration affected other than operation conditions for a mass flux.
The present study numerically investigated the effect of the geometry of the flattened tube on the thermal performance of a high temperature generator (HTG) of a double effect LiBr-water absorption system. The heat transfer tubes of the HTG were arranged behind a metal fiber burner. The heat transfer of the tubes of HTG were consisted with a set of circular and flattened tubes in series. FLUENT, as a commercial code, was applied for estimating the thermal performance of the HTG. Key parameters were the tube arrangement in the HTG. Temperature and velocity profiles in the HTG were calculated to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. The heat transfer rate of a HTG tube was increased, and the gas temperature around the flattened tube was decreased as the pitch ratio was increased. The heat transfer rate for the circular tube bundle with the pitch ratio of 2.48 were larger by 10% respectively than that of 2.10 and the heat transfer rate for the flattened tube bundle with the pitch ratio of 1.88 were larger by 36% respectively than that of 1.63.
The present study numerically investigated the tube geometry and arrangement on the performance of a high temperature generator (HTG) of the double effect LiBr-water absorption system. FLUENT, as a commercial code, was used to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. Key parameters were the spacing raito of circular and flattened tubes, the pitch ratio of the rib on the flattened tube, and total heat transfer area of the HTG. Temperature and velocity profiles around the tubes of the HTG were calculated to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. When the spacing ratio of circular and flattened tube is 1.11 and 0.73, the exhaust gas temperature is $185^{\circ}C$ without rib. The exhaust gas temperature when applied the rib in flattened tubes was lower by $24^{\circ}C$ than that without the rib. Rib can reduce the HTG volume by 7%.
The optimal design of two stage evaporation & absorption system which is related to the large temperature difference system was investigated numerically in the absorption refrigeration system. The concentrations at inlet & oulet of absorber are 62.9% and 56.9%, but in two stage absorption system the values are 62.2% and 56.2%. Therefore strong solution & weak solution became diluted than the standard value. The amount of weak solution circulation can be reduced in absorption refrigeration system, and the sensible heat load is more reduced to enhance the COP of system. As UAR is increased, COP becomes larger, and this means the role of top section is more important than bottom section in two stage evaporation & absorption system. But the increase of COP becomes slower at 0.7 of UAR ratio. The performance of Type2 is higher than Type1 in COP with the flow direction of cooling waters. This phenomena is due to the active absorption of vapor -absorption & lower temp. cooling water is more effective. The pressure at bottom section becomes higher & that at top section becomes lower and therefore the circulation rate can be diminished more.
