Spherical $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ (LVP) and carbon-coated LVP with a monoclinic phase for the cathode materials are synthesized by a hydrothermal method using $N_2H_4$ as the reducing agent and saccharose as the carbon source. The results show that single phase monoclinic LVP without impurity phases such as $LiV(P_2O_7)$, $Li(VO)(PO_4)$ and $Li_3(PO_4)$ can be obtained after calcination at $800^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. SEM and TEM images show that the particle sizes are $0.5{\sim}2{\mu}m$ and the thickness of the amorphous carbon layer is approximately 3~4 nm. CV curves for the test cell are recorded in the potential ranges of 3.0~4.3 V and 3.0~4.8 V at a scan rate of $0.01mV\;s^{-1}$ and at room temperature. At potentials between 3.0 and 4.8 V, the third $Li^+$ ions from the carbon-coated LVP can be completely extracted, at voltages close to 4.51 V. The carbon-coated LVP exhibits an initial specific discharge capacity of $118mAh\;g^{-1}$ in the voltage region of 3.0 to 4.3 V at a current rate of 0.2 C. The results indicate that the reducing agent and carbon source can affect the crystal structure and electrochemical properties of the cathode materials.
Recently, various degradation mechanisms of lithium secondary battery cathode materials have been revealed. As a result, many studies on overcoming the limitation of cathode materials and realizing new electrochemical properties by controlling the degradation mechanism have been reported. Li-rich layered oxide is one of the most promising cathode materials due to its high reversible capacity. However, the utilization of Li-rich layered oxide has been restricted, because it undergoes a unique atomic structure change during the cycle, in turn resulting in unwanted electrochemical degradations. To understand an atomic structure deterioration mechanism and suggest a research direction of Li-rich layered oxide, we deeply evaluated the atomic structure of 0.4Li2MnO3_0.6LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 Li-rich layered oxide during electrochemical cycles, by using an atomic-resolution analysis tool. During a charge process, Li-rich materials undergo a cation migration of transition metal ions from transition metal slab to lithium slab due to the structural instability from lithium vacancies. As a result, the partial structural degradation leads to discharge voltage drop, which is the biggest drawback of Li-rich materials.

The monolithic dry gels of the Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system were prepared by the sol-gel technique using metal alkoxides as starting materials to obtain monolithic glass-ceramics at low temperature without melting. Activation energy for the crystal growth of the gel with 6.05% TiO2, nucleating ageng, for the preparation of Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system glass-ceramic was 101.14kcal/mol. As a result of the analysis of DTA & XRD, it was confirmed that the crytallization of Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system glass-ceramic was the most efficient when 6.05% TiO2, nucleating agent, was added. $\beta$-eucryptite solid solution crystals and $\beta$-spodumene solid solution crystals were detected in the sample heat treated above 85$0^{\circ}C$. The sintered gel heat treated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ had the specific surface area of 185$m^2$/g, the pore volume of 0.19cc/g and the average pore radius of 20.8$\AA$. This shows that the sintered gel is also comparatively porous material. In temperature range of 25~85$0^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient of the specimen which was crystallized for 10hrs at 85$0^{\circ}C$ was 6.7$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$, which indicated that the crystallized specimen was turned out to be the glass-ceramic with low thermal expansion.
In this study, $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ anode materials for lithium ion battery were synthesized by dry ball-mill method. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a carbon source was added to improve electrochemical properties. When the PVC was added after $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ formation, the spinel structure was well synthesized and it was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. When the carbon material was added before the synthesis and the heat treatment was performed, it was confirmed that a material having a different crystal structure was synthesized even when a small amount of carbon material was added. In the case of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ without the carbon material, the electrical conductivity value was about $10{\mu}S\;m^{-1}$, which was very small and similar to that of the nonconductor. As the carbon was added, the electrical conductivity was greatly improved and increased up to 10,000 times. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis showed that the size of semicircle corresponding to the resistance decreased with the carbon addition. This indicates that the resistance inside the electrode is reduced. According to the Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis, the potential difference between the oxidation peak and the reduction peak was reduced with carbon addition. This means that the rate of lithium ion insertion and deinsertion was increased. $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ with 9.5 wt% PVC added sample showed the best properties in rate capabilities of $180mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at 0.2 C-rate, $165mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at 0.5 C-rate, and $95.8mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at 5 C-rate.
In this study, the method to improve the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ by carbon coating and morphology control into porous structure was studied. The synthesis of $LiFePO_4$ was done by coprecipitation method by two step procedure. In the first step $FePO_4$ precursor was synthesized by coprecipitation method, followed by impregnation of lithium into the precursor at $750^{\circ}C$. The carbon coating was done by both physical and chemical coating processes. Using the physical coating process, the amount of coating layer was 6% and the capacity achieved was 125 mAh/g. In case of chemical coating process, the active material delivered 130~140 mAh/g, which is about 40% improvement of delivered capacity compared to uncoated $LiFePO_4$. For the morphology control into porous structure, we added nano particles of $Al_2O_3$ or $SiO_2$ into the active materials and formed the nanocomposite of ($Al_2O_3$ or $SiO_2$)/$LiFePO_4$. Between them, $SiO_2/LiFePO_4$ porous nanocomposite showed larger capacity of 132 mAh/g.

Layered Ni-rich NCM cathode materials $Li[Ni_xCo_{(1-x)/2}Mn_{(1-x)/2}]O_2$ ($x{\geq}0.6$) have advantages of high energy density and cost competitive over $LiCoO_2$. The discharge capacity of NCM increases proportionally to the Ni contents. However, there is a problem that it is difficult to realize the stable electrochemical performance due to cation mixing. In this study, synthesis conditions for the layered Ni-rich NCMs are investigated to achieve deliver the ones having good electrochemical performances. Synthesis parameters are atmosphere, lithium source, synthesis time, synthesis temperature and Li/M (M=transition metal) ratio. The degree of cation mixing gets worse as the Ni content is increased from $Li[Ni_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}]O_2$ (NCM6) to $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.1}]O_2$ (NCM8). It is confirmed that higher level of cation mixing affects negatively on the electrochemical performance of NCMs. Optimum synthesis conditions are explored for NCMx (x=6, 7, 8) in order to reduce the cation mixing. Under optimized conditions for three representative NCMx, a high initial discharge capacity and a good cycle life are obtained for $180mAh{\cdot}g^{-1}$, 96.2% (50 cycle) in NCM6, $187mAh{\cdot}g^{-1}$, 94.7% (50 cycle) in NCM7, and $201mAh{\cdot}g^{-1}$, 92.7% (50 cycle) in NCM8, respectively.

Various compositions of iron oxide based materials as a cathode of lithium secondary battery have been fabricated and tested with electrochemical method. A layered form of $LiFeO_2$ was synthesized by mixing and heating the initial materials of $FeCl_3\;6H_2O,\;LiOH$ and NaOH at low temperature. The effect of changing the precursors composition was investigated. As a result, when increasing the additive amount of NaOH, the capacity of the electrode is decreased but the performance and declining rate of capacity became smaller. $LiFeO_2$ synthesized with the weight ratio of $NaOH/FeCl_3/LiOH,\;2/1/7$ showed the largest capacity, but the discharging efficiency was sharply decreased after 30 cycles. Charge-discharge tests of lithium cells with $LiFeO_2$ cathode having the layer structure were performed. This cell showed the reversibility in the range of 1.5-4.5V of cell voltage. By using CPR method, chemical diffusion coefficients were measured in 1M $LiPF_6/EC/DEC$ solution. The value of chemical diffusion coefficient decreased with increasing the lithium content x, In 0.5$10^{-11}^cm^2/s$.

Phospho-olivine $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials were prepared by hydrothermal reaction. Carbon black was added to enhance the electrical conductivity of $LiFePO_4$. The structural and morphological performance of $LiFePO_4$ and $LiFePO_4$-C powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FE-SEM. $LiFePO_4/SPE/Li$ and $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cells were characterized electrochemically by charge/discharge experiments. The results showed that the discharge capacity of $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cell was 103 mAh/g at the first cycle. The discharge capacity of $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cell with 5 wt% carbon black was the largest among $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cells, 126 mAh/g at the first cycle and 123 mAh/g after 30 cycles, respectively. It was demonstrated that cycling performance of $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cell with 5 wt% carbon black was better than that of $LiFePO_4$/SPE/Li cell.
