Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor is a rare sex-cord stromal tumor of the ovary. They make up less than 0.5 % of all ovarian tumors. We experienced a case of an ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in a 4 year-old girl who presented with nausea, vomiting, and lower abdominal pain of 2 days' duration. On physical examination, there was mild tenderness in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a pelvic mass measuring $5{\times}3cm$ that appeared to arise from the right ovary. At exploratory laparotomy, a $6{\times}5{\times}3cm$ solid right ovarian mass without torsion was found. A right salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful. The child was discharged 5 days after surgery.

A 15-year-old intact Yorkshire terrier was presented with anorexia, lethargy, and a pale mucous membrane. A physical examination one year ago revealed right testis mass and subcutaneous petechia. Blood work revealed severe thrombocytopenia and mild anemia, and no abnormalities were found in serum chemistry or ultrasonography. The preoperative serum estrogen concentration was moderately elevated. The enlarged testis was surgically removed. A well-encapsulated mass composed of polyhedral or round with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm containing fine granular or vacuolation were found in a histological examination of the removed tissue. The nuclei of tumor cells were round, and mitotic figures were low but neoplastic cells showed a mild invasive tendency to adjacent tissues with contained neoplastic cell emboli in one lymphatic lumen. A diagnosis of a malignant Leydig cell tumor was made. The patient recovered from surgery uneventfully, but his condition worsened despite repeated transfusions and supportive therapy, and he was euthanized according to the owner's decision. Leydig cell tumor should be included in estrogen toxicity associated with testicular mass.

A sex cord tumor with annnular tubules is a relatively rare ovarian neoplasm. The cytologic findings from a fine needle aspiration biopsy of neck metastasis of a sex cord tumor with annnular tubules are described. The origin of the neck metastasis was the right ovary, and the tumor was diagnosed six years ago. The cytologic findings were characterized by tumor cells arranged in solid or follicular patterns. The tumor cells formed rosette-like or complex tubular structures with central rounded or coalesced hyaline materials. It was difficult to distinguish this tumor cytologically from granulosa cell tumor, thyroid follicular neoplasm, Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor, and Brenner tumor, but complex tubular structures were helpful in discriminating between these tumors.

Sertoli cell tumor (SCT) of the testicle arises from the supporting cells within the seminiferous tubules. SCT is common in dogs, especially in cryptorchid testicles, but also has been reported in the stallion, ram, cat, and bull. Sertoli cell tumor sample was collected from 7-years male german shepherd. In this study, SCT arose from one testicle. Sample size is approximately 1.7 cm in diameter and it has a round form. In the microscopic, cells within the tumor variably resemble Sertoli cells (SCs) that normally populate the seminiferous tubules and interstitial area. There is abundant stroma of dense, mature fibrous connective tissue in SCT. In the immunohistochemical staining, cytokeratin AE1/AE3 was not expressed in the control and SCT. S-100 protein was expressed by SCs, germ cells and fibrous connective tissue of SCT. Melan A was expressed by leydig cells (LCs) of SCT. A study by using S-100 and melan A in canine SCT was almost never carried out. S-100 and melans A is considered to suggest for diagnosis and pathogenesis of canine SCTs. Inhibin-alpha and Vimentin were well known as the marekers of SCTs. Also, they were expressed by Sertoli cells and LSs of SCT in this study.

Sex cord tumors with annular tubules are known to originate from the sex cord of embryonic gonads that synthesize Sertoli cells, Leydig cells, granulosa cells, and theca cells of the ovarian stroma, while ovarian small cell carcinoma of the hypercalcemic type is a type of neuroendocrine tumor. Both these tumors are uncommon, potentially malignant neoplasms in children. We report the case of a sex cord tumor with annular tubules in an 11-year-old girl and a case of small cell carcinoma of the hypercalcemic type in a 10-year-old girl. We also discuss the prognosis and management of these tumors.

The calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) is a member of the largest family of cell surface receptors, the G protein-coupled receptors involved in calcium homeostasis. The role of the CaSR in neoplasia appears to be homeostatic; loss of normal CaSR-induced response to extracellular calcium is observed in cancers of the colon and ovary, while increased release of PTHrP is observed in cancers of the breast, prostate and Leydig cells. Currently CaSR can be considered as a molecule that can either promote or prevent tumor growth depending on the type of cancer. Therefore, recognition of the multifaceted role of CaSR in gliomas and other malignant tumors in general is fundamental to elucidating the mechanisms of tumor progression and the development of novel therapeutic agents. Emphasis should be placed on development of drug-targeting methods to modulate CaSR activity in cancer cells.

Objective: This case report represented that Korean traditional medicine therapies can make effective results for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy(CIPN) patients. Methods: A 63-year-old female patient has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer(Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor). Total excision of uterus and appendages was operated, and Bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin combination therapy was applied. After three cycles of chemotherapy, the severe side effects of neutropenia and CIPN occurred. Chemotherapy was terminated, but numbness and tingling pains in the limbs persisted for several months. We provided Korean medicine treatments including herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, moxibustion and physiotherapies. Results: After treatments, the numbness and pain were reduced from 10 to 1 in hand and 6 to 0 on the numeric rating scale(NRS). Functional assessment of cancer therapy/Gynecologic oncology group neurotoxicity (FACT/GOG-NTX) score was improved from 58 to 97. Conclusion: According to these results, Korean medicine treatments could be considered effective for CIPN. Prospective studies are needed to confirm and expand these findings.

신령버섯균사체 액체배양 추출물(Agaricus blazei mycelial liquid culture extract, ABMLCE)은 TM-3 mouse Leydig 고환세포에서 testosterone (TS)의 생성을 촉진하였다. 이번 연구에서는 eritadenine (EA, 15.3 mg/100 g)을 함유한 ABMLCE가 RWPE-1 전립선세포에서 전립선비대증(Benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) 관련 핵심 효소인 $5{\alpha}-reductase$ 2 ($5{\alpha}-R2$) 활성과 dihydrotestosterone (DHT) 함량을 감소시켰음을 보고한다. RWPE-1 전립선 세포는 24-well plate에서 ABMLCE (0~50 ppm), EA (0~10 ppm,), finasteride (FS $10{\mu}M$: positive Control)를 함유한 Keratinocyte serum-free medium (K-SFM)에서 24시간 배양하였다. 시료처리 세포배양액에 대해 $5{\alpha}-R2$, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) 효소활성, TS, DHT, tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$)와 $interleukin-1{\beta}$ ($IL-1{\beta}$)를 assay kit를 사용하여 분석하였다. $5{\alpha}-R2$ 활성과 DHT 함량은 ABMLCE의 농도 의존적으로 유의성(p<0.05) 있게 감소되었고, SOD와 CAT 효소활성은 유의성(p<0.05) 있게 증가되었다. 반면에 COX-2 활성과 $TNF-{\alpha}$ 및 $IL-1{\beta}$의 함량은 감소되었다(p<0.05). 마찬가지로 EA의 효과도 ABMLCE 효과와 유사하였다. ABMLCE 50 ppm과 EA 10 ppm의 $5{\alpha}-R2$ 및 DHT 감소효과는 FS $10{\mu}M$ 효과와 유사하였다. 이들 결과는 ABMLCE와 EA는 항염증효과와 항산화효과를 통하여 BPH 유발 핵심 인자인 $5{\alpha}-R2$ 효소활성과 DHT 함량을 감소시켰다. 또한 이 결과는 EA를 함유하는 ABMLCE는 인체 BPH 개선 소재로 활용할 수 있음을 의미한다.
