The present study aims to investigate lexical coverage of BNC (British National Corpus) word lists and 2015 Basic Vocabulary of Ministry of Education in 2020 EBS-linked textbooks and CSAT. For the data analysis, AntWordProfiler was used to find lexical coverage and frequency. The findings showed that Students can understand 95% of the tokens with a vocabulary of BNC 3,000 and 4,000 word-families in 2020 EBS-linked listening and reading books respectively. 98% can be understood with 4,000 word-families in the EBS-linked listening book while the same lexical coverage can be covered with 8,000 word-families in the EBS-linked reading textbook. By the way, 95% of the tokens can be understood with 2,000 and 4,000 word-families in 2020 CSAT listening and reading tests respectively, while 98% requires 4,000 and 7,000 word-families in the 2020 listening and reading tests respectively. In summary, students should understand more words in 2020 EBS-linked textbooks than in 2020 CSAT tests confirming Kim's (2016) findings. In summary, students should understand more words in 2020 EBS-linked textbooks than in 2020 CSAT tests.
In this paper, we describe our LVCSR system for Korean broadcast news transcription. The main focus is to find the most proper morpheme-based lexical model for Korean broadcast news recognition to deal with the inflectional flexibilities in Korean. There are trade-offs between lexicon size and lexical coverage, and between the length of lexical unit and WER. In our system, we analyzed the training corpus to obtain a small 24k-morpheme-based lexicon with 98.8% coverage. Then, the lexicon is optimized by combining morphemes using statistics of training corpus under monosyllable constraint or maximum length constraint. In experiments, our system reduced the number of monosyllable morphemes from 52% to 29% of the lexicon and obtained 13.24% WER for anchor and 24.97% for reporter.

Coverage has been a constant thorn in the side of deployed deep linguistic processing applications, largely because of the difficulty in constructing, maintaining and domaintuning the complex lexicons that they rely on. This paper reviews various strands of research on deep lexical acquisition (DLA), i.e. the (semi-)automatic creation of linguistically-rich language resources, particularly from the viewpoint of DLA for precision grammars.
Most approaches for extracting hypernyms of a noun from its definitions in an MRD rely on lexical patterns compiled by human experts. Not only these approaches require high cost for compiling lexical patterns but also it is very difficult for human experts to compile a set of lexical patterns with a broad-coverage because in natural languages there are various expressions which represent same concept. To alleviate these problems, this paper proposes a new method for extracting hypernyms of a noun from its definitions in an MRD. In proposed approach, we use only syntactic (part-of-speech) patterns instead of lexical patterns in identifying hypernyms to reduce the number of patterns with keeping their coverage broad. Our experiment has shown that the classification accuracy of the proposed method is 92.37% which is significantly much better than that of previous approaches.

This paper describes a method for automatic acquisition of wide-coverage treebank-based deep linguistic resources for Japanese, as part of a project on treebank-based induction of multilingual resources in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG). We automatically annotate LFG f-structure functional equations (i.e. labelled dependencies) to the Kyoto Text Corpus version 4.0 (KTC4) (Kurohashi and Nagao 1997) and the output of of Kurohashi-Nagao Parser (KNP) (Kurohashi and Nagao 1998), a dependency parser for Japanese. The original KTC4 and KNP provide unlabelled dependencies. Our method also includes zero pronoun identification. The performance of the f-structure annotation algorithm with zero-pronoun identification for KTC4 is evaluated against a manually-corrected Gold Standard of 500 sentences randomly chosen from KTC4 and results in a pred-only dependency f-score of 94.72%. The parsing experiments on KNP output yield a pred-only dependency f-score of 82.08%.
This corpus-driven research expounded the compilation of the most frequently occurring academic words in the domain of syntax and compared the extracted wordlist with Academic Word List(AWL) of Coxhead(2000) and General Service List(GSL) of West(1953) to examine their distribution and coverage within the syntax corpus. A specialized 546,074 token corpus, composed of widely used must-read syntax textbooks for English education majors, was loaded into and analyzed with AntWordProfiler 1.4.1. Under the parameter of lexical frequency, the analysis identified 288(50.5%) AWL word forms, appeared 16 times or more, as well as 218(38.2%) AWL items, occurred not exceeding 15 times. The analysis also indicated that the coverage of AWL and GSL accounted for 9.19% and 78.92% respectively and the combination of GSL and AWL amounted to 88.11% of all tokens. Given that AWL can be instrumental in serving broad disciplinary needs, this study highlighted the necessity to compile the domain-specific AWL as a lexical repertoire to promote academic literacy and competence.
According to Jeong Ho-seong (1999), Koreans use an average of only 20% of the 508,771 entries of the Korean standard unabridged dictionary. To establish MRD for natural language processing, it is necessary to select Korean lexical units that are used frequently and are considered as basic words. In this study, this selection process is done semi-automatically using the KAIST large corpus. Among about 220,000 morphemes extracted from the corpus of 40,000,000 eojeols, 50,637 morphemes (54,797 senses) are selected. In addition, the coverage of these morphemes in various texts is examined with two sub-corpora of different styles. The total coverage is 91.21 % in formal style and 93.24% in informal style. The coverage of 6,130 first degree morphemes is 73.64% and 81.45%, respectively.
Long sentence analysis has been a critical problem in machine translation because of high complexity. The methods of intra-sentence segmentation have been proposed to reduce parsing complexity. This paper presents the intra-sentence segmentation method based on maximum entropy probability model to increase the coverage and accuracy of the segmentation. We construct the rules for choosing candidate segmentation positions by a teaming method using the lexical context of the words tagged as segmentation position. We also generate the model that gives probability value to each candidate segmentation positions. The lexical contexts are extracted from the corpus tagged with segmentation positions and are incorporated into the probability model. We construct training data using the sentences from Wall Street Journal and experiment the intra-sentence segmentation on the sentences from four different domains. The experiments show about $88\%$ accuracy and about $98\%$ coverage of the segmentation. Also, the proposed method results in parsing efficiency improvement by 4.8 times in speed and 3.6 times in space.
Since a natural language has inherently structural ambiguities, one of the difficulties of parsing is resolving the structural ambiguities. Recently, a probabilistic approach to tackle this disambiguation problem has received considerable attention because it has some attractions such as automatic learning, wide-coverage, and robustness. In this paper, we focus on Korean probabilistic parsing model using head co-occurrence. We are apt to meet the data sparseness problem when we're using head co-occurrence because it is lexical. Therefore, how to handle this problem is more important than others. To lighten the problem, we have used the restricted and simplified phrase-structure grammar and back-off model as smoothing. The proposed model has showed that the accuracy is about 84%.
This study focuses on a method for sequential data augmentation in order to alleviate data sparseness problems. Specifically, we present corpus expansion techniques for enhancing the coverage of a language model. Recent recurrent neural network studies show that a seq2seq model can be applied for addressing language generation issues; it has the ability to generate new sentences from given input sentences. We present a method of corpus expansion using a sentence-chain based seq2seq model. For training the seq2seq model, sentence chains are used as triples. The first two sentences in a triple are used for the encoder of the seq2seq model, while the last sentence becomes a target sequence for the decoder. Using only internal resources, evaluation results show an improvement of approximately 7.6% relative perplexity over a baseline language model of Korean text. Additionally, from a comparison with a previous study, the sentence chain approach reduces the size of the training data by 38.4% while generating 1.4-times the number of n-grams with superior performance for English text.
