Cognitive neuropsychological assesment in pure alexic patient with letter-by-letter reading using fMRl - Single case study - (주변성 난독증의 특성과 대뇌활성화 양상 - 단일사례연구 -)

  • In this study we investigated the cognitive neuropsychological characteristics and the underlying mechanism in a letter-by-letter reading dyslexic patient after cerebral infarct of left posterior cerebral artery using fMRl, The results of cognitive neuropsychological assesment are visual perception was appropriate, and semantic categorization, picture naming and picture-word matching tasks were above83% correct, respectively. However, she was very poor in lexical decision task. The selective reading impairment is thought to result from the disruption of the left occipitotemporal region included fusiform gyrus. In fMRl results, the activation level increase din the right occipitotemporal region included fusiform gyrus compared with normal group in compensation for left impairment and more increased in pseudo word reading task than word reading on account of familiarity.

Semantic transparency effects in the learning of new words: An ERP study (의미 투명성이 단어 학습에 미치는 영향: 사건관련전위 연구)

  • The present study investigates the effects of semantic transparency on the learning of new words using both behavioral measures and event-related brain potentials. Participants studied novel words with either semantically transparent or opaque definitions while their brain potentials were recorded. Learning performance was assessed with both a lexical decision task and a recall test. The results indicated that transparent novel words were easier to learn than opaque words. More specifically, self-paced learning times were shorter for transparent novel words across three study sessions. Transparent words also elicited reduced N400s compared with opaque words in all sessions. Moreover, lexical decisions to both learned novel words and real words were faster and more accurate within the transparent condition compared to the opaque condition. These results suggest that semantic transparency also plays an important role within word learning, just as within word recognition, further supporting the notion that morphological information is critical within lexical processing.

The Effect of the Orthographic and Phonological Priming in Korean Visual Word Recognition (한국어 시각 단어재인과정에서 음운정보와 표기정보의 역할)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether the phonological information or the orthographic information plays a major role in visual word recognition. To do so, we used a non-word lexical decision task(LDT) in Experiment 1 and masked priming tasks in Experiement 2 and 3. The results of Experiment 1 showed that reaction times and the error rates were affected by the orthographic characteristics of the non-word stimuli such that orthographically similar non-words condition showed prolonged reaction times and higher error rates than control condition. In Experiment 2 and Experiment 3, the participants performed masked priming lexical decision tasks in two SOA conditions(60ms, 150ms). The results of the both experiments showed that the orthographically identical first syllable priming facilitated lexical decision of the target words while both of the pseudo-homophone priming and the phonologically identical first syllable priming did not. The dual route hypothesis(Coltheart et al, 2001), assuming that orthographic information rather than phonological information is the major source for the visual word recognition processes, fits well with the results of the current study.

  • The study was designed to investigate implicit and explicit memory effec representations of bilinguals. Hierarchical model of bilingual information processing word naming and translation tasks in the context of semantically categorized or rar Experiments 1 and 2, bilinguals first viewed stimulus words and performed naming or tr then implicit and explicit memory tasks. In experiment I, word recognition times(exp were significantly faster for semantic category condition than random category condi naming task and lexical decision taskOmplicit memory task)showed no difference in e experiment 2, naming task and exlicit memory task showed categorization effect but fOWE a and implcit memory task showed no categorization effect. These findings support the which posits that memory representations of bilinguals are composed of two independer a and one common conceptual store.

The Korean Word Length Effect on AudWord Recognition (청각단어 재인에서 나타난 한국어 단어 길이 효과)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of word length on auditory word recognition. Word length can be defined by several sublexical units, such as letters, phonemes, syllables, etc. To find out which sublexical units are influential in auditory word recognition, the auditory lexical decision task was used. In Experiment 1, we examined the partial correlation between the speed of reaction time and the number of sublexical units, and in Experiment 2, we executed ANOVA to find out which sublexical length variable was an influential unit. Through these two experiment, we concluded syllable length was the most important variable on auditory word recognition.

  • 한국어 명사 어절의 시간 경과에 따른 처리 양상을 확인해 보기 위하여 점화어절판단과제(primed eojeol decision task)를 이용한 실험을 실시하였다. 점화어 제시 방식은 차폐점화, SOA 100ms, SOA 300ms 조건으로 하였으며, 점화어-표적어의 관계는 어절일치, 어간일치, 통제조건으로 조작하였다. 그 결과 어절일치조건과 어간일치조건에서 촉진효과가 있었으며, SOA가 증가함에 따라 어절일치조건과 어간일치조건에서의 촉진효과도 함께 증가하는 양상을 확인하였다. 점화어의 제시 방식과 점화어-표적어의 관계간의 상호작용도 유의미하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 심성어휘집에서의 어절 표상의 실재성과 어절 속성과 어간 속성이 어절 처리 과정에 관여하는 방식에 관하여 논의하였다.

The Mental Representation of English Verb in Korean-English Moderate Bilingual (한국어-영어 이중언어화자의 외국어 동사 표상)

  • This research was investigate to understand how moderate bilingual subjects represent the lexicon in second language. Although most researches have focused only on high proficient bilinguals, we analysed how moderate bilinguals who have learned English mostly in school represent the prototype of verb and its inflected form of verb. Results of lexical decision task showed that moderate bilingual subjects used different mental representation depending on whether the verb have regular or irregular conjugation. With regular verbs, the identification of an inflected form was affected by both the frequency of its prototype and that of inflected form, but with irregular verbs, it is affected only by the frequency of inflected form.

  • 본 논문은 한국어의 통사적 중의성이 언어정보처리에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보기 위하여 어휘판단과제(lexical decision task)를 실시하였다. 명사의 의미와 동사의 의미로 중의적인 어절을 사용하여 각각의 빈도가 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 개별 품사 정보가 모두 영향을 미친다면 각각의 빈도가 영향을 미치게 되고 누적빈도 효과가 발생하여 개별 품사의 빈도와 동일한 비교조건에서의 반응시간보다 빠를 것이다. 실험 결과, 중의어절에서의 반응시간이 가장 빠르게 발생하였고 이를 통해 하나의 중의어절이 의미하는 개별적인 품사 의미가 모두 언어정보처리에 영향을 미친다는 것을 의미한다.

The Difference of Emotional Evaluation for Personal Pronoun 'I' and 'You' (인칭 대명사 '나'와 '너'의 정서적 평가 차이)

  • Three experiments were conducted to explore the interaction of personal pronoun (e.g. 'I' and 'you') and emotional evaluation (e.g. positive and negative) using time-course (e.g. SOA 500-1000ms) and multi-task approaches (e.g. lexical decision task and primed naming task). In Experiment 1, Participants were presented personal pronoun as primes at SOA 1000ms and were asked to response emotional words which were differed in emotional attributes. The results showed that the interaction effects of personal pronoun and emotional words were found. In Experiment 2, Participants were presented personal pronoun as primes at SOA 1000ms and were asked to response emotional words which were differed in emotional attributes. The results showed that no effects were found. In Experiment 3, Participants were presented personal pronoun as primes at SOA 500ms and were asked to pronounce emotional words which were differed in emotional attributes. The results showed that the interaction of personal pronoun and emotional words were found. The results of 3 experiments were discussed from a point of view of dynamic processes of social cognition.

Two Languages in One Brain Shown by fMRI: Orthography Specific Effects in L2 (fMRI에 나타난 모국어와 외국어로서의 한국문자와 중국문자의 차이)

  • 본 연구는 문자 규칙 심층성이 다른 문자체계인 한국어와 중국어의 차이가 이중언어화자의 모국어 처리와 외국어 처리에서 각각 어떤 대뇌 활성화의 차이를 가져오는지 fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging)를 이용하여 살펴보았다. 중국어 (Ll)-한국어(L2) 이중언어화자 및 한국어(Ll)-중국어(L2) 이중언어화자를 제 2언어 습득시기에 따라 초기 및 후기 이중언어화자로 구분하여 모국어 차이와 습득시기에 따른 영향을 알아보았다. 실험 1에서는 어휘 판단 과제(lexical decision task)를 실시하였고, 실험 2에서는 의미 판단 과제(semantic decision task)를 각각 실시하였다. 어휘판단과제를 사용한 실험 1의 결과는 음운처리와 관련된 좌반구 SMG(supramarginal gyrus), 하두정소엽(inferior parietal lobule, BA 39, 40)에서 중국어-한국어 초기 및 후기이중언어화자의 경우, 한국어 조건에서 보다 많은 활성화를 보였으나, 한국어-중국어 화자의 경우 활성화가 나타나지 않았다. 철자처리에 관련된 방추상회(fusiform gyrus, BA 37, 19) 영역에서는 중국어-한국어 화자뿐만 아니라, 한국어-중국어 인중언어화자의 경우도 중국어 조건에서 보다 많은 활성화를 보였다. 실험 2에서 사용한 의미판단과제의 경우, 중국어-한국어 이중언어화자의 경우 어휘판단과제를 사용한 실험 1의 결과에서 보고된 한국어 특정적인 반응, 즉 SMG영역에서의 활성화의 증가가 실험 2에서는 나타나지 않았다. 그러나 한국어-중국어 이중언어화자의 경우, 실험 1에서 나타난 것과 같이 철자처리 혹은 의미처리와도 관련된다고 보고되는 방추상회(fusiform gyrus)등의 영역 유의미한 차이를 나타났다. 이는 어휘 판단과제와 의미판단과제가 유도하는 뇌 활성화 양상이 다름을 시사한다. 종합해 볼 때, 이중언어화자의 뇌 영상 연구에서 어휘수준에서는 거의 공통적인 활성화를 보인다는 개략적 수준의 연구 결과를 넘어, 음운처리 및 철자처리와 같은 어휘접근 수준에서는 이중언어화자들의 뇌 활성화가 다르게 일어남을 보여주고 있다. 따라서 이중언어 화자의 뇌 기전을 밝히기 위해서도 보다 개략적 수준을 넘어 언어처리의 세부적인 수준에 따른 접근이 필요함을 시사한다.
