  • Purpose: A soft contact lens was manufactured by adding naringin known as natural anti-bacterial material to resin solution. With solution eluted from manufactured contact lens, we examined its optical properties, physical and chemical states of naringin in the polymer, and elution properties. Methods: The soft contact lens with naringin was synthesized by bulk polymerization method. IR spectrum and HPLC were used to define the bonding type of naringin itself in the soft contact lens contained naringin, elution process of naringin to the saline solution, and the amount of naringin solution eluted from the lens with elapsed time. Results: Naringin was continuously eluted with constant concentration from the soft contact lens for about a month and the structure ofnaringin which is eluted was as same as before it was added to resin solution. Any change in optical properties such as transmittance couldn't be found. Bonding state and the structure of naringin in contact lens were explained with IR spectrum and HPLC results. Conclusions: In the contact lens with naringin, naringin remained in the contact lens bonding with weak hydrogen bonding and/or van der Waals force between naringin and polymer. Naringin was continuously eluted from the contact lens contained naringin during about 1 month. Even after 1 month, it showed that the concentration of the naringin eluted was approximately 10 ppm in a day. From the results, adding naringin to the soft contact lens resin is very effective method for manufacturing the soft contact lens which has anti-bacterial function for a period of time.

  • Laser Lift-Off (LLO) is a process that removes a GaN or AIN thin layer from a sapphire wafer to manufacture vertical-type LEDs. It consists of a light source, an attenuator, a mask, a projection lens and a beam homogenizer. In this paper, we design an attenuator and a projection lens. We use the 'ZEMAX' optical design software for analysis of depth of focus and for a projection lens design which makes $7{\times}7mm^2$ beam size by projecting a beam on a wafer. Using the 'LightTools' lighting design software, we analyze the size and uniformity of the beam projected by the projection lens on the wafer. The performance analysis found that the size of the square-shaped beam is $6.97{\times}6.96mm^2$, with 91.8 % uniformity and ${\pm}30{\mu}m$ focus depth. In addition, this study performs dielectric coating using the 'Essential Macleod' to increase the transmittance of an attenuator. As a result, for 23 layers of thin films, the transmittance total has 10-96% at angle of incidence $45-60^{\circ}$ in S-polarization.

  • The purpose of this study was to decrease the protein adsorption and improve the function of the hydrophobic acrylic Intraocular lens(IOL). Hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses were prepared by using ethyleneglycol phenyletheracrylate (EGPEA), styrene and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) were used as additives. Water contents, wettability, light transmittance and protein adsorption amount were measured to evaluate the physical properties of the intraocular lens. The water content and wettability of all samples containing additives were increased and the amount of protein adsorption decreased. In particular, samples containing MPC showed a further decrease in protein adsorption. The hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens with PVP and MPC was found to improve the function of the intraocular lens by reducing the protein adsorption while having basic physical properties.

  • A study that copolymerized Ag nanoparticle and furfuryl isocyanate with the crosslinking agent EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), MA (methacrylic acid) and the initiating agent AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) is presented. Measurement of the physical characteristics of the produced macromolecule showed that the water content is 32.08~32.67%, refractive index 1.446~1.448, visible light transparency 83.2~67.6%, contact angle $68.2{\sim}83.5^{\circ}$ and tensile strength 0.541~0.755 kgf. It is also demonstrated that the addition of Ag nanoparticles is associated with the reduction of UV-B transmittance and increase in tensile strength. The results show that the produced copolymer can be used as a material for ophthalmic lenses with durability and UV-blocking properties.

  • This study investigated the influence of various sintering pressures of ZnS nanoparticles prepared by hydrothermal synthesis performed at 220 ℃ for 20 h. The hydrothermally synthesized ZnS nanoparticles formed a cubic phase. The ZnS nanoparticles were sintered using a hot-press process at 850 ℃ for 2 h under pressures of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 MPa. The ZnS ceramics indicate the cubic phase is the major phase and the hexagonal phase is the minor phase. In the ZnS ceramics, as the sintering pressure increased, a decrement in the hexagonal phase was confirmed. When the sintering pressure equaled or exceeded 30 MPa, the transmittance and density improved with reductions in porosity and hexagonal phase. A sintering pressure of 60 MPa delivered the highest transmittance (69.7%).

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of stray light originating from the blue-light blocking lens on the quality of the image. After designing the ideal spectacle lens, anti-reflection spectacle lens without internal reflection, anti-reflection spectacle lens with internal reflection, and blue-light blocking lens with internal reflection, the light intensity distribution and stray light distribution were derived. The designed spectacle lenses are meniscus lenses with a refractive power of 0.00 D, refractive index of 1.56, and a radius of 155.15 mm. The peaks of reflectance of the 4 types of blue-light blocking lenses are in the range between 430 nm and 440 nm, and their reflectances are 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. According to the analysis results, as the reflectance of the blue-light blocking lens increases, the light intensity in the center of the lens decreases and the intensity of the stray light in the center-periphery and periphery of the lens increases. This trend appeared to intensify with increasing reflectance of the blue-light blocking lenses. Because the increase in the reflectance of the blue-light blocking lens degrades the quality of the image by increasing the intensity of the stray light in the center-periphery and periphery of the lens, its reflectance needs to be adjusted by varying the blue-light blocking ratio and the luminous transmittance, in order to diminish the level of visual discomfort.

  • Recently, silicone is being used for LED chip lens due to its good thermal stability and optical transmittance. In order to predict residual stresses, which cause optical birefringence and mechanical warpage of silicone, a finite element analysis was conducted for the curing of silicone during molding. For the analysis of the curing process, a dynamic cure kinetics model was derived based on the results of a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) testing and applied to the material properties for finite element analysis. Finite element simulation results showed that a step cure cycle reduced abrupt reaction heat and showed a decrease in the residual stresses.

  • HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and propylene glycol was copolymerized in the presence of AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) initiator in a mould. The physical properties of the contact lens were measured. The water content of 37.06~38.71%, refractive index of 1.492~1.432, visible transmittance of 89.4~91.5%, tensile strength of 0.1416~0.2302 kgf, and contact angle of $38.60{\sim}53.53^{\circ}$ were obtained. Therefore, the contact lens material produced using propylene glycol as an additive satisfied the basic physical properties required for contact lenses application. It is interesting to note that an increase in wettability and tensile strength while having no significant changes in water content.

  • The eye sensitivity in the difference conditions of a light source intensity consists of two functions by the receptor of cone and rod according to a wavelength. We derived a distribution function of $P{\lambda}=A{\cdot}e^{-({\lambda}-{\lambda}_u)^2/2W^2}$ using a respond probability of the receptor of cone-rod for a photon. It was well applied for a CIE eye's sensitivity curve of a wavelength. When there is lens In front of eye, luminous efficiency should be corrected. Transmission light which permeate to depends on absorption wavelength, and relationship of final luminous efficiency's estimation method is expressed by multiplication of luminous efficiency and transmittance intensity of lens. $$Pf({\lambda})=T({\lambda}){\cdot}P({\lambda})$$. The theory was applied to photopic and scopic vision with brown color lens.

  • The major physical characteristics of macromolecules used in silicone hydrogel ophthalmic lenses include optical transmittance, oxygen permeability, water content, and refractive index. For the preparation of highly functional silicone hydrogel lens materials, two silicone monomers were used in the presence of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). The samples containing HEMA and HPMA had oxygen transmissibility (Dk) values in the range of 73.38–50.98 × 10-11 (cm2/s) (mLO2/mL×mmHg) and 71.94–42.80 × 10-11 (cm2/s) (mLO2/mL×mmHg), respectively. Furthermore, the water contents of samples containing HEMA and HPMA were in the range of 32.73–34.67% and 31.94–33.74%, respectively, and the refractive indices were in the range of 1.4348–1.4364 and 1.4385–1.4407, respectively. Thus, silicone monomers containing HEMA and HPMA are expected to be useful for fabricating high-oxygen-permeability silicon hydrogel ophthalmic lenses.
