  • Many techniques have been proposed and investigated for microlens array manufacturing in three-dimensional (3D) structures. We present fabricating a microlens array using selective laser etching and a CO2 laser. The femtosecond laser was employed to produce multiple micro-cracks that comprise the predesigned 3D structure. Subsequently, the wet etching process with a KOH solution was used to produce the primary microlens array structures. To polish the nonoptical surface to the optical surface, we performed reflow postprocessing using a CO2 laser. We confirmed that the micro lens array can be manufactured in three primary shapes (cone, pyramid and hemisphere). Compared to our previous study, the processing time required for laser processing was reduced from approximately 1 hour to less than 30 seconds using the proposed processing method. Therefore, micro lens arrays can be manufactured using our processing method and can be applied to mass productionon large surface areas.

  • The aim of this study was performed the clinical test using Netspeg lens for good visual acuity on subjects with abnormal refraction status. The subjects of one hundreds adults (fifty males, fifty females, mean=21 years, range=19 to 24) were recorded. The subjects were researched the history including the systemic health, medication, genetics, allergy, systemic disease and ocular disease. The refraction test was recorded the monocular and binocular using objective method. Visual acuity was performed the binocular status using the Netspeg lens and CR-39. Stereopsis test was performed the titmus fly and TNO at near distance using Netspeg lens and CR-39. The P-VEP test was used the 16 pattern size(Bausch Lomb, production in USA) with three channels. Also Subjects viewed the p-vep stimulus with binocular vision through the corrected visual acuity using the Netspeg lens and CR-39. The contrast sensitivity test was performed the contrast sensitivity chart(pelli-Robertson, USA) at 1m distance using the Netspeg lens and CR-39. The ultrastructure of surface on the Netspeg lens and CR-39 was observed the SEM(JMS-5800, made in Japan). The results of this study was as follows: 1. In corrected visual acuity of abnormal refraction using the Netspeg lens and CR-39, the Netspeg lens wearer were acquired the good visual field and clear visual acuity comparative to CR-39 wearer in the subject vision test. however the comfort of visual acuity was similar results in the Netspeg lens and CR-39. Also the subjects of Netspeg lens wearer was good visual acuity more than CR-39 wearer and in the analysis of P-VEP, the amplitude of wave on Netspeg lens used appears to be better through the CR-39(p>0.5). Besides, on the contrast sensitivity, the Netspeg lens wearer was good results than CR-39. The value on stereopsis with TNO by Netspeg lens wearer was better than CR-39 in results. However, in the stereopsis test with Titmus, the Netspeg lens and CR-39 wearer was similar results. 2. The ultrastructure of Netspeg lens surface was the smooth and fine shape more than CR-39. Also, Netspeg lens have a fine line structure in ultrastructure. In conclusion, the results of this study conformed that the surface ultrastructure of Netspeg lens used is more specific pin hole design structure than CR-39. This study indicated that the vision of Netspeg lens used have a better than CR-39 in the corrected visual acuity for abnormal refraction eye. Therefore, In this paper, we suggested that the ultrastructure and line structure of Netspeg lens was related to good visual function. However the visual function of the aspheric Netspeg and ultra waterproof Netspeg lens was similar results.

  • A mathematical model and its computer solution program were proposed to analyze the motion of contact lenses which are being subject to lid-blinking. The equation was derived by incorporating an acceleration induced lid's force exerting on the contact lens, the viscous damping resistance in the tear layer beneath the lens and the sliding frictional force between the lid and the contact lens surface into the formulation of differential equation describing the vibration. The model predicts the time-dependent displacement from the equilibrium postion during/after the blinking. During the blinking, as the time for the completion of one cycle of blinking decreases the off-the-equilibrium displacement of contact lens increases while the decrease of diameter in the contact cause the opposite effect. It is found that lid pressure exerting on the lens cause an insignificant lens displacement from the equilibrium position. After blinking the frequency of damped oscillation of contact lens decreases as the diameter of lens increases, due to the incresed surface while the reduced blinking time does not cause a significant frequency change. This is because that driving force for the contact lens movement posterior to blinking is the capillary-induced force not the lid force.

  • Purpose: To design an anamorphic aspherical prism lens for the HMD optical system. Methods: First, we get the initial data, needed in design, which are distances between each surface etc., by analyzing user's demended specifications and by drawing geometrically the shape of prism lens by using CAD. Based on these data and using 'ode V' which is an optical design software, we could progress the optimization in which we treat the coefficients of the anamorphic aspherical surface as the principal variables. To reduce the cost in DTM manufacturing, we would optimize the optical system with the transmitting surface, existed in the direction of video device among 3 surfaces of the prism lens, remaining as a plane. Results: we could design one anamorphic aspherical prism lens which has the finite ray aberration of 15 ${\mu}m$, the distortion of 0.5%, and the MTF value of 0.3 over at 36 lp/mm for the video device of 12 mm ${\times}$ 9 mm size. Conclusions: We designed a prism lens used for HMD. This prism lens has the optical capacities of 15 ${\mu}m$ finite ray aberration and 0.5% distortion for the video device of 12 mm ${\times}$ 9 mm size, and become the optical system having the MTF value of 0.3 over at 36 lp/mm.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform a clinical test using ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses for the effects of visual acuity and cornea on subjects with abnormal refraction status. One hundred twenty one adults (twenty nine males, ninety two females, range = 17 to 43, mean = 22.86) were recorded. The subject's history including, the symptoms from previous lens wear, were studied. The subjects were observed, both pre and post lens wear, for any symptoms and signs of change of the eye. The Visual acuity and the binocular status were tested at the far distance using the contact lens. The refraction test was performed on the naked eye using the objective method (Topcon KR-8100, Japan). The Stereopsis test was performed at the near distance after contact lens wear by the Titmus fly (Stereo Optical Co., U.S.A) and TNO (TECH, The netherlands). The contrast sensitivity diagnosis was performed at 1m distance after contact lens wear by the contrast sensitivity chart (pelli-Robertson, USA). The corneal topography was analyzed on the naked eye after lens wear by ORB scan (Bausch Lomb, U.S.A.). The ultra structure of surface on the contact lens was observed using SEM (JMS-5800, Japan). The chemical component's of the contact lens was analyzed by EDS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The longer of contact lens wear period, The subjects have acquired the most improved visual function. 2. Subjects had experienced few side effects wearing the contact lenses. 3. The lenses were easy to use by the subjects. 4. The longer of contact lens wear period, the power of cornea had more decrease. but the base curve of cornea had more increase and corneal astigmatism was decrease (p<0.01). Also, the thickness of corneal center was few decrease. 5. Longer periods of using the contact lens showed stereopsis and contrast sensitivity at more normal values. 6 The corneal topographical after lens wear showed most subjects with similar morphology for different wear periods. 7. The surface ultrastructure of the new and used contact lens was the similar fine shape. 8. The chemical component's of in the new and used contact appeared to have similar results. In conclusion, this study showed that the surface ultrastructure and chemical component's of the new and used contact lens are similar. In addition, the subjects had improved the quality of vision and few experienced any side effects during long periods of contact lens wear. Also they have decrease of corneal astigmatism during the long period of lens wear. Our test has showed that the chemical composition and fine structure of contact lens have related to the visual function on contact lens wearer. In this paper, we suggested that ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses had a moderate effect for correcting vision of abnormal refraction eye.

  • Micro lens array(MLA) is widely used in information technology(IT) industry fields for various applications such as a projection display, an optical power regulator, a micro mass spectrometer and for medical appliances. Recently, MLA have been fabricated and developed by using a reflow method having the processes of micro etching, electroplating, micro machining and laser local heating. Laser thermal relaxation method is introduced in marking of microdots on the surface of densified glass. In this paper, we have proposed a new direct fabrication process using UV laser local thermal-expansion(UV-LLTE) and investigated the optimal processing conditions of MLA on the surface of negative photo-resist material. We have also studied the 3D shape of the micro lens obtained by UV laser irradiation and the optimal process conditions. And then, we made chrome mold by electroplating. After that, we made MLA using chrome mold by hot embossing processing. Finally, we have measured the opto-physical properties of micro lens and then have also tested the possibility of MLA applications.

  • Recently aspheric lenses are widely used for superpricision optical instruments, such as cellular phone camera modules, digital cameras and optical communication modules. The aspherical lenses are processed using mold core under high temperature compressive forming pressure. It is imperative to develop superhard protective films for the life extension of lens forming mold core. Especially ta-C films with higher $sp^3$ fractions receive attentions for the life extension of lens forming mold and, in turn, the cost reduction of lenses due to their suprior high temperature stability, high hardness and smooth surfaces. In this study ta-C films were processed on WC mold as a function of substrate bias voltage using FVA (Filtered Vacuum Arc) method. The processed films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and nano-indentation to investigate bonding nature and hardness, respectively. The film with maximun 87% of $sp^3$ fraction was obtained at the substrate bias voltage of -60 V, which was closest to ta-C film. ta-C films showed better high temperature stability by sustaining relatively high fraction of $sp^3$ bonding even after 2,000 glass lens forming applications.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel differential equation method for designing a total internal reflection (TIR) LED lens with double freeform surfaces. A complete set of simultaneous differential equations for the method is derived from the condition for minimizing the Fresnel loss, illumination models, Snell’s Law of ray propagation, and a new constraint on the incident angle of a ray on the light-exiting surface of the lens. The last constraint is essential to complete the set of simultaneous differential equations. By adopting the TIR structure and applying the condition for minimizing the Fresnel loss, it is expected that the proposed TIR LED lens can have a high luminous flux efficiency, even though its beam-spread angle is narrow. To validate the proposed method, three TIR LED lenses with beam-spread angles of less than 22.6° have been designed, and their performances evaluated by ray tracing. Their luminous flux efficiencies could be obviously increased by at least 35% and 5%, compared to conventional LED lenses with a single freeform surface and with double freeform surfaces, respectively.
