  • With 3-D vision measuring, camera calibration is necessary to calculate parameters accurately. Camera calibration was developed widely in two categories. The first establishes reference points in space, and the second uses a grid type frame and statistical method. But, the former has difficulty to setup reference points and the latter has low accuracy. In this paper we present an algorithm for camera calibration using perspective ratio of the grid type frame with different line widths. It can easily estimate camera calibration parameters such as focal length, scale factor, pose, orientations, and distance. But, radial lens distortion is not modeled. The advantage of this algorithm is that it can estimate the distance of the object. Also, the proposed camera calibration method is possible estimate distance in dynamic environment such as autonomous navigation. To validate proposed method, we set up the experiments with a frame on rotator at a distance of 1,2,3,4[m] from camera and rotate the frame from -60 to 60 degrees. Both computer simulation and real data have been used to test the proposed method and very good results have been obtained. We have investigated the distance error affected by scale factor or different line widths and experimentally found an average scale factor that includes the least distance error with each image. It advances camera calibration one more step from static environments to real world such as autonomous land vehicle use.

  • Target strength (TS) of Japanese common squids (Todarodes pacificus) were measured using 38 and 120 kHz split beam scientific echosounders under the live condition. For the TS measurement of an individual, a total of 3 squids (mantle length (ML): 22.8, 25, and 27 cm) were used using small fishhook method, whereas for measurement of swimming angle, a total of 8 squids (ML: 21-27 cm) were used under live condition, confined with net cage with 2 m diameter At the same time, two underwater video cameras enabled continuous monitoring of squid behavior. Considering normal behavior, the mean TS at 38 and 120 kHz varied from -48.6 to -45.9 dB, and from -46.5 to -44.6 dB, respectively In both frequencies, mean TS at 120 kHz is relatively higher than that of 38 kHz, approximately 1.3-2.5 dB. From free living condition, the mean swimming angle of the squlds was $-24^{\circ}$. The results of the measurement will be provided basic information for conducting acoustic surveys of the squid.

  • Everyday congestion length (distance) and duration (time) data are collected and recorded in Expressway Traffic Information Center. These records are based on the information that the operators watch CCTV and decide traffic condition in order to present information about congestion on VMS. Using VMS message has some merits like that it doesn't need a great lot of cost to construct hardware such like FTMS because operators can check traffic condition by watching CCTV only. Of cause in the aspect of accuracy, using VMS message has the limitation that it is based on subject decision compared with FTMS. However, it can be said that the value of using VMS message is very large. The object of this study is to use the VMS information record (log file) usefully to provide information of traffic condition on expressway for users (drivers) without keeping the VMS information record in dead storage. To do so, in this research, congestion calculation method able to understand traffic congestion condition on expressway was developed.

  • To estimate more accurately the outflow over a sharp crested side weir, it is necessary to analyze the flow characteristics over side weir and to estimate the discharge coefficient in the weir equation. The purpose of this study is to estimate the discharge coefficients of sharp crested rectangular and triangular side weirs by means of hydraulic model experiments with the variations of upstream Froude number in the main channel and length and apex angle. Experimental results show that the discharge coefficients depend on the shape and geometric conditions of side weir as well as the upstream Froude number in the main channel. Through the multiple regression analysis, formulas of discharge coefficient for rectangular and triangular types are proposed and its applicability is confirmed by comparing estimated and measured discharges over side weirs.

  • By this time, many methods have been developed for computing the pit excavation volumes, ranging from a simple formula to more complicated numerical methods. Earlier the standard methods for pit excavation volume computation requires that the considered area be divided the boundary ranges of x and y directions into a rectangular grid. whereas these methods may not calculate the estimation of pit excavation volume that is often required in many surveying situation exactly. In Easa methods(1998), the rectangular grid is divided into the same linear in the range x and y directions respectively. This method employs a cubic Hermite polynomial for individual intervals in both directions of the grid. Because the height data over the same boundary of x and y interval ranges have to be exist, it is not possible to choose the governing points of the terrain boundary such as points of maximum and minimum height. In this study, a method of volume computation, that combines the advantages of Easa methods(1998) and avoids the drawbacks of it, is presented. The proposed method employs a cubic Hermite polynomial for individual intervals in both directions of the non-grid, the all over intervals of it may be unequal grid x in width and y in length y, partially. The new proposed method should produce better accuracy than the other conventional methods.

  • This paper presents the pullout behavior of suction pile using finite difference method; and the commercial software, FLAC3D, was employed for the numerical analyses. The ultimate pullout capacity of suction pile was predicted using conventional equations, and the results were compared with the results from numerical analyses with varying pile diameter, pile length, and the undrained shear strength of clays. Based on the results from 24 analyses, it was found that the failure pattern depends not only on the drainage condition of suction pile, but also on the pile dimensions and the material properties of surrounding soils. The developed side shear (DSS) along the internal surface of the suction pile was collected from numerical analyses, which was used to classify the failure type between sliding failure and tensile failure. Regardless of the external DSS, the high internal DSS tends to result in sliding failure in the numerical analyses, which conforms well to the estimation from conventional equations.

  • As limited well-documented experimental data are available for assessing the attributes of different deformation components of flanged walls, few appropriate models have been established for predicting the inelastic responses of flanged walls, especially those of asymmetrical flanged walls. This study presents the experimental results for three large-scale T-shaped reinforced concrete walls and examines the variations in the flexural, shear, and sliding components of deformation with the total deformation over the entire loading process. Based on the observed deformation behavior, a simple model based on moment-curvature analysis is established to estimate flexural deformations, in which the changes in plastic hinge length are considered and the deformations due to strain penetration are modeled individually. Based on the similar gross shapes of the curvature and shear strain distributions over the wall height, a proportional relationship is established between shear displacement and flexural rotation. By integrating the deformations due to flexure, shear, and strain penetration, a new load-deformation analytical model is proposed for flexure-dominant flanged walls. The proposed model provides engineers with a simple, accurate modeling tool appropriate for routine design work that can be applied to flexural walls with arbitrary sections and is capable of determining displacements at any position over the wall height. By further simplifying the analytical model, a simple procedure for estimating the ultimate displacement capacity of flanged walls is proposed, which will be valuable for performance-based seismic designs and seismic capacity evaluations.

  • In this paper, the algorithm to extract the height of flat-rooftop structures in stereo aerial image is suggested with an assumption that location, orientation, focal length, and field of view of a camera are known. It can be adapted to stereo aerial or satellite images. For performing feature-based stereo matching, the line segments suitable to describe the shape of general buildings are chosen as the feature. This paper is composed of three categories;the first step is to extract edges of structures with the polygon extraction algorithm which utilizes the edge following method, the second step is to perform the line segment matching with the camera information, and the last step is to calculate the location of each matched line and to estimate heights. The stereo images used in experiments are not real but synthetic ones. The experiment shows good results.

  • Chinese cabbage is one of the most important vegetables in Korea and a target crop for market stabilization as well. Remote sensing has long been used as a tool to extract plant growth, cultivated area and yield information for many crops, but little research has been conducted on Chinese cabbage. This study refers to the derivation of simple Chinese cabbage growth prediction equation by using RapidEye derived vegetation index. Daesan-myeon area in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea is one of main producing district of Chinese cabbage. RapidEye multi-spectral imagery was taken on the Daesan-myeon five times from early September to late October during the Chinese cabbage growing season. Meanwhile, field reflectance spectra and five plant growth parameters, including plant height (P.H.), plant diameter (P.D.), leaf height (L.H.), leaf length (L.L.) and leaf number (L.N.), were measured for about 20 plants (ten plants per plot) for each ground survey. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for each of the 20 plants was measured using an active plant growth sensor (Crop $Circle^{TM}$) at the same time. The results of correlation analysis between the vegetation indices and Chinese cabbage growth data showed that NDVI was the most suited for monitoring the L.H. (r=0.958~0.978), L.L. (r=0.950~0.971), P.H. (r=0.887~0.982), P.D. (r=0.855~0.932) and L.N. (r=0.718~0.968). Retrieval equations were developed for estimating Chinese cabbage growth parameters using NDVI. These results obtained using the NDVI is effective provided a basis for establishing retrieval algorithm for the biophysical properties of Chinese cabbage. These results will also be useful in determining the RapidEye multi-spectral imagery necessary to estimate parameters of Chinese cabbage.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: While plate waste has been widely investigated in hospitals, there have been minimal studies specific to the texture-modified diet (TMD). This study aims to determine the percentage of plate waste among patients prescribed with TMD and its contributory factors. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This was a single-centre study conducted in the university hospital on three types of TMD (blended diet, mixed porridge, minced diet) during lunch and dinner meals. Weighing method and visual estimation method assisted by digital photograph were adopted in this study. Face to face interview was carried out to investigate on 1) the food/food service quality factors in terms of patients' satisfaction level towards sensorial quality of food and food services provided and 2) the clinical/external factors including appetite, the provision of oral nutrition support, time taking the diet, the need for feeding assistance and the length of hospital stay. RESULTS: The mean percentage of overall plate waste of 95 patients receiving TMD was high (47.5%). Blended diet was identified as the most wasted diet (65%) followed by minced diet (56%) and mixed porridge (35%). Satisfaction level among patients was moderate. Patients on TMD in general had higher satisfaction level on the aspect of food service as compared to food quality. Substantial association between sensorial qualities of food and plate waste were varied according to individual TMD type. A multiple linear regression showed that only the satisfaction level toward the aspects of appearance and variety of foods were the predictors of TMD plate waste (R2 = 0.254, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A significant relationship between the percentage of plate waste and the overall satisfaction level of patients receiving TMD suggests that vigorous strategies are needed to reduce the food waste of TMD which will lead to a better nutritional status and clinical outcomes among the patients.
