  • This paper deals with the dynamic stability analysis of clamped-hinged columns with constant volume. Numerical methods are developed for solving natural frequencies and buckling loads of such columns, subjected to an axial compressive load. The parabolic taper with the regular polygon cross-section is considered, whose material volume and column length are always held constant. Differential equations governing both free vibrations and buckled shapes of such columns are derived. The Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the Regula-Falsi method is used to determine natural frequencies and buckling loads, respectively. The numerical methods developed herein for computing natural frequencies and buckling loads are found to be efficient and robust. From the numerical results, dynamic stability regions, dynamic optimal shapes and configurations of strongest columns are reported in figures and tables.

  • Superconducting windings of synchronous machine have to be operated in below the critical temperature, critical current density and critical magnetic field. If one of these characteristics does not satisfied, then the quench occurred in superconducting winding. Especially the armature current dramatically increased as the superconducting generator is short-circuited at the rated load condition and magnetic field in field winding increased due to the armature current. Therefore, damper is required to reduce the magnetic field of field winding which increases reliability of the superconducting generator. Damper dimension can be decided by time constant[1-2]. In this paper the basic model is high-power and low-speed superconducting generator. Damper time constant was calculated from the changed damper thickness and material. Magnetic flux of field coil at the basic model and changed damper time constant model is analyzed.

  • Several sensorless vector control methods of induction motor have been proposed, but these methods don't have the satisfying performance to the change of the rotor time constant. Therefore, this paper proposes the sensorless vector control method which estimates the rotor speed using MRAS and compensates the rotor time constant using current error feedback at the same time. This method can guarantees the accurate performance of sensorless vector control while the rotor speed and the rotor time constant are changing. This method is verified by computer simulation using SIMULINK in MATLAB.

  • We investigate effects of the injected ASE (Amplified spontaneous emission) bandwidth on the performance of the wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (F-P LDs) under constant injection power density and constant injection power. For the constant injection power density, we can determine the minimum injection bandwidth by the required intensity noise or the bit-error rate (BER) performance. On the other hand, there exists the optimal ASE bandwidth for the constant injection power to minimize the intensity noise.

  • A polygon-wise constant curvature natural element approximation is presented in this paper for the numerical implementation of the abstract Kirchhoff plate model. The strict continuity requirement in the displacement field is relaxed by converting the area integral of the curvatures into the boundary integral along the Voronoi boundary. Curvatures and bending moments are assumed to be constant within each Voronoi polygon, and the Voronoi-polygon-wise constant curvatures are derived in a selective manner for the sake of the imposition of essential boundary conditions. The numerical results illustrating the proposed method are also given.

  • We investigated the effect of relative dielectric constant of front dielectric layer on the efficacy of plasma display panel. Dielectric materials with relative dielectric constant of around 6 and 7 were developed. When the front dielectric layer had a low relative dielectric constant, power consumption decreased more than luminance did. And it led to efficacy enhancement. However, the minimum sustain voltage increased.

  • To obtain a high performance in a vector controlled induction machine, it is essential to know the instantaneous position of the rotor flux which depends on the rotor time constant. But the rotor time constant mainly varies due to the temperature rise in the motor winding, so real time compensating algorithm is necessary. This paper proposes that it uses short duration pulses added to the constant flux command current and then resultant torque command current produced by speed controller is utilized for the rotor resistance estimation. This method has advantages with a low computational requirement and does not require voltage sensors. The proposed method is proved by simulations.

  • Electric stimulation of teeth is used for assessing pulp vitality. Because of very high and wide range of impedance of the enamel, electric pulp testers use high voltage, high output impedance and alternative current source. Most pulp testers use voltage stimulation method and their stimulating threshold levels significantly depend on each individual. Therefore, a constant current stimulator is necessary to minimize the effect of wide variation in enamel thickness. In this study, we constructed a constant current source type of pulp tester with the maximum current of 150 uA.

  • This paper proposes a simple identification method of the rotor time constant to solve the degradation of motor performance due to the difference between the rotor time constant of a controller and actual one in slip frequency type vector control scheme. The proposed method is based on rotor induced voltage equations and it is confirmed that immunity of the stator resistance thermal variation. The simulation results show that the proposed method suitably identifies the rotor time constant in steady state as well as in transient state.

  • Electrocoalescence is an active technique in petroleum industry, formation of raindrop in cloud, and digital microfluidics. In the present work, electrocoalescence of two droplets under the constant electric potential in air was studied. Through this experiment, we found that the electrocoalescence process could be divided three phases; deformation, formation of liquid bridge, and merging. And the condition for formation of liquid bridge between two droplets was obtained. For the connection of experimental result in constant potential condition with general case in constant charge condition, relationship of charge and potential difference was deduced by numerical computation. In high electric potential case, flat interfaces after recoiling were observed. It was interpreted through a numerical simulation of electric field.
