A Literatual Study on the Treatment of Stroke in The 《Dongyi Suse Bowon》 (동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)의 문헌적(文獻的) 자료(資料)에 근거(根據)한 중풍(中風) 치료(治療)에 대한 고찰(考察))

  • The purpose of this study was to find the way of treatment and prevention the stroke by Sasang constitutional medical therapy. I came to get some conclusions after considering literatures of ${\ll}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\gg}$ and the conclusion as follows. 1. In ${\ll}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\gg}$ the stroke of Soumin is caused by 'Interior cold disease'. When 'Interior Yin' can not descend, the disease arise. In this case Lee Je-ma used 'Sohabhyang-won(蘇合香元)', 'Chulaek-su(鐵液水)'. 2. The stroke of Soyangin is caused by 'Interior heat disease'. When the hot Qi of stomach and spleen is blocked, the disease arise. In this case Lee Je-ma used 'Dokhwal-jihwang-tang(獨活地黃湯)', 'Jihwang-baekho-tang(地黃白虎湯)'. 3. The stroke of Taeumin is caused by 'Dry and heat disease'. When the heat of liver and the dryness of lung is excessive, the disease arise. In this case Lee Je-ma treated with 'Woohwang-chungsim-hwan(牛黃淸心丸)', 'Wonji-sukchangpo-tang(遠志石菖蒲湯)', and 'Kwache-san(瓜帶散)' etc. Above results indicate that not only taking medicine but also filling up the Healthy energy(保命之主) is important to treat stroke.

A Study on the Conclusion of 「Gwangjeseol」 in 『Dongeuisusebowon』 (『동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)』 「광제설(廣濟說)」의 결론에 대한 고찰)

  • Objective The purpose of this study was to understand the conclusion of 「Gwangjeseol」 in 『Dongeuisusebowon』 in a more accurate sense. Method We examined the basic viewpoint of Lee je-ma in 「Seongmyeonglon」 in 『Dongeuisusebowon』. Based on the interpretation of the 「Seongmyeonglon」, the viewpoints described in the pathology theory of 『Dongeuisusebowon』 were examined. In addition to 『Dongeuisusebowon』, we looked for contents related to "TuHyeonJilNeung" and "HoHyeonNagSeon" in Lee je-ma's book 『Gyukchigo』 and 『Dongmuyugo』. Result We have found that the meanings of the words "TuHyeonJilNeung" and "HoHyeonNagSeon" in the last article of 「Gwangjeseol」 are not limited to just the 「Gwangjeseol」, but contain the meaning of a topic that runs through the entire book. According to the 『Gyukchigo』 and 『Dongmuyugo』, the meaning of "TuHyeonJilNeung" is related to the "Sa-Bang-Il-Yog", and the "Sa-Bang-Il-Yog" is the "ilsimjiyog" that prevents the practice of "Ji-Haeng". This concept is the same as the concept of "Ji-Haeng" in 「Seongmyeonglon」, the first unit of 『Dongeuisusebowon』. Conclusion It is considered that Lee je-ma wanted to emphasize the reason and mindset to do "Ji-Haeng" by writing the end of the 「Gwangjeseol」, which is the last part of 『Dongeuisusebowon』.

A Study on the Yin and Yang Poison (陰陽毒) in 『Donguisusebowon』 (『동의수세보원』 음양독(陰陽毒)에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to enhance the understanding of Yin and Yang poison by examining and comparing the views of Je-ma Lee and the medicine scholars before Je-ma Lee, including Zhang Zhongjing. Methods We examined and compared the contents related to Yin and Yang poison in 『Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet (金匱要略)』, 『Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)』, and 『Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元)』. Results and Conclusion In 『Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet』, Zhang Zhongjing described the symptoms of Yin and Yang poison respectively, but could not suggested each prescription. In 『Donguibogam』, there were several prescriptions for Yin and Yang poison, respectively. In 『Donguisusebowon』, Yang poison belonged to the Soyangin and Taeeumin disease, Yin poison belonged to the Soeumin disease. Je-ma Lee emphasized that interior heat, which has grown suddenly should be controlled quickly for treatment of Yang poison in Soyangin and Taeeumin. And, in order to treat Yin poison caused by chronic course in Soeumin, Ginseng should be used a lot to help the Yang energy. Also, it is a better treatment to take the medicine ahead of time before the disease develops into Yin poison.

A Study on The Origin and Background of GalgeunNabokja-Tang (갈근나복자탕(葛根蘿葍子湯)의 기원(基源)과 창방(創方) 시기(時期)에 관한 고찰(考察))

  • 1. Background: GalgeunNabokja-Tang(葛根蘿葍子湯) is suggested as treatment and prescription of Exterior Heat syndrome Diarrhea(表熱證泄瀉) in Donguisusebowon Tae-eumin Interior febrile disease induced form the liver affected by heat("東醫壽世保元" "太陰人肝受熱裏熱病論"), but is not recorded the treatment contents in Sinjungbang("新定太陰人病應用要藥二十四方"). 2. Methods: Accordingly, the writer surveyed, compared, and arranged the relevant contents by collecting books of doctors of Four-Constitutional Medicine(四象醫) since Lee Je-ma including Lee Je-ma's books. 3. Results: and Conclusions: 1) The treatment contents in GalgeunNabokja-Tang are thought to be valid to have the criterion as the contents of appearing in SanggyohyuntoDonguisusebowon Boyubang("詳校懸吐東醫壽世保元" "補遺方"). 2) The origin in GalgeunNabokja-Tang is GalgeunNabokja-Tang in Bimang-lok("備忘錄"). And the period of having made treatment for the first time may be estimated to be the one between Donguisuse- bowonSasangchobonguan("東醫壽世保元四象草本卷") and HamsansachonDonguisusebowonGabogubon ("咸山沙村東醫壽世保元甲午舊本"). 3) GalgeunNabokja-Tang is thought to be probably what Han Du-jeong recorded in Boyubang by searching for what Lee Je-ma modified some of GalgeunNabokja-Tang in Bimang-lok while writing Pathological Syndromes("病證論") in Donguisusebowon("東醫壽世保元").

Characteristics of Mind-Body Medicine Revealed in the Sa-Sang Constitutional Medicine of Lee Je-ma (동마(東武) 이제마(李濟馬)의 사상의학(四象醫學)에 드러난 심신의학(心身醫學)적 특징)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of mind-body medicine revealed in the Sa-sang constitutional medicin. Methods: This study examined the psychosomatic aspects of "DongUiSuSeBoWon" that Lee Je-ma wrote about the Sa-sang constitutional medicine, comparing them to Neo-Confucianism and Oriental medicine. Results: Sa-sang constitutions contain much content that can be applied to mind-body medicine. Conclusions: First, the principle of disease caused by mental and physical connections was clearly suggested, as it was considered that when emotions of joy, sorrow, and pleasure reach their peak, they cause fatal damage to the body. Second, it was encouraged to prevent diseases by giving specific examples to prevent the prejudice of the methodology of looking back when it hasn't happened yet and the feeling of anger and joy before the emotions of joy and sorrow are revealed. Third, it suggested the treatment of mental and physical diseases using drugs for diseases that have already occurred and psychiatric methods.

The comparison study of the thought of the 『Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju』 and Lee Je-ma (심경부주(心經附註)의 사상(思想)과 이제마(李濟馬) 사상(思想)과의 비교)

  • By the investigation of "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" and the comparison study between the thought of "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" and that of Lee Je-ma, I've got the following conclusion. 1. All man have two mind. That is explained that "In-Sim" and "Do-Sim" in the "Sim-Kyong-Bu-Ju", "Kun-Ja-Ji-Sim" and "So-In-Ji-Sim" in the Lee Je-ma. 2. says that "In-Sim" and "Do-Sim" are the important point of the distinguishment of the "Sung-In" from "Jung-In". The "Sung-In" is the man who distinguishes "In-Sim" from "Do-Sim" well, and he always is cautious for "In-Sim"s" falling in desire by the "Do-Sim". In the case of LeeJe-ma,"Kun-Ja-Ji-Sim" is easy to know and "So-In-Ji-Sim" is hard to know. The man of "Kun-Ja-Ji-Sim" being large part is "Kun-Ja" and the man of "So-In-Ji-Sim" being large part is "So-In". 3. To reach the state of the "Kun-Ja", the "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" and Lee Je-ma present the variant training methods, "Kei-Shin-Kong-Ku" which they have in common. The "Sin-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" presents the "Kyung" firstly for "Kei-Shin-Kong-Ku", Lee Je-ma presents the "Yo-In-Sang-Jep-Ji-Sung" and "Ja-Ki-Tok-Tuk-Ji-Sung" for "Jel-Bu-Jel", "Jung-Bu-Jung", "Ji-In", "Ji-Chen". 4. The "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" says that establish the "Sung-Ui" by the "Kei-Shin-Kong-Ku", and to "Jung-Sim" by the "Sung-Ui", Lee Je-ma says "Chi-Sim-Jung-Ki" by "Ji-In".

  • 1. Background and Purpose Since ${\ulcorner}$Dongri Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ was published in 1929, it had great effects on the publications related to Sasang Constitutional Medicine. However there had been no practical research or its applications about ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ at all in spite of its importance. So through the study on the ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ we highly intend to utilize the book. 2. Methods In this dissertation, you'll find our research of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ regarding the author, the people who were involved in the publishing, the formations and the contents, our another research of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun Chebang${\lrcorner}$(東醫四象新編劑方) to make its medical characteristics and meaning clear. 3. Results and Conclusion 1) Won Chi Sang was Chang Bong Young's granduncle's son-in-law. Nam Dae-hee is suspected of Nam Tae-hee who lived in YeoJu Bam Gol at that time though, it's not certain. 2) ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ is consisted of two pans. ${\ulcorner}$The Internal part${\lrcorner}$ is the basic explanation and ${\ulcorner}$The External part${\lrcorner}$, is the prescriptions depending on the symptoms. ${\ulcorner}$Sasang Byunron${\lrcorner}$,(四象辯論) is mostly that's for the explanations about analysis of Sasang Constitution. ${\ulcorner}$Sasang Kyunghum${\lrcorner}$(四象經驗) is mainly it's for the prescriptions depends on Sasangin's symptoms. ${\ulcorner}$Sasang Kukyul${\lrcorner}$(四象口訣), ${\ulcorner}$Tong Sasang Changbu Sochaedo${\lrcorner}$(通四象臟腑所在圖), ${\ulcorner}$Tong Sasang Chunche Sosokdo${\lrcorner}$(通四象全體所屬圖) are about the analysis of Sasangin's characteristics from metaphysical concepts to Changbustic concepts. In ${\ulcorner}$Sasangin oyak${\lrcorner}$(四象人要藥), among them, 10 types of medicines were categorized separately by constitutional difference in ${\ulcorner}$Dongui Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$Dongmu Youg${\lrcorner}$(東武遺槁). The unique style of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Yongyak Huebun${\lrcorner}$(東醫四象用藥索分) is originated from ${\ulcorner}$Bangyak Happyun${\lrcorner}$ ${\ulcorner}$Euibang Whaltu${\lrcorner}$(${\ulcorner}$方藥合編${\lrcorner}$${\ulcorner}$醫方活套${\lrcorner}$), ${\ulcorner}$Whaltu Chimsun${\lrcorner}$,(${\ulcorner}$方藥合編${\lrcorner}$ ${\ulcorner}$活套鎭線${\lrcorner}$). 3) There are 293 prescriptions in ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun Chebang${\lrcorner}$. 36 out of 44 prescriptions in ${\ulcorner}$Gapont${\lrcorner}$(甲午本) are quoted in ${\ulcorner}$kyunghumbang${\lrcorner}$. Therefore it could be very possible that those unknown prescriptions in ${\ulcorner}$Kyunghumbang${\lrcorner}$ can be from lee Je Ma. 4) We are assumed that ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ was made by some other doctors not from one single person, based on Lee Je Ma's prescriptions, after Lee Je Ma died. ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun${\lrcorner}$ is very different from ${\ulcorner}$Dongeyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$, ${\ulcorner}$Dongmu Yougo${\lrcorner}$(東武遺稿). ${\ulcorner}$Chobonkwun${\lrcorner}$(草本卷) by lee Je Ma since it was published for utilizing Sasang Constitutional Medicine and medical practice not for the basic principles of Sasang Constitution by Lee Je Ma. Therefore it could be highly possible to look over the spirit of Sasang Constitution by lee Je-ma.

  • As considering a comparison study of the structure of mind and psychologic type of C.G Jung to Ji-In-Lon and Sa-Sang constituition of Lee Je Ma, I've got the following conclusion. 1. The study of the structure of mind of Jung and Ji-In-Lon of Lee Je ma have a important meaning to each theory of type of men. They developed their own peculiar theory of type men by the analysis of the mind of men. 2. Jung explained the organization of recognition by four phase theorical structure; consciousness, personal unconsciousness, collective unconsciousness, self. Lee Je Ma explained the organization of recognition by four phase theorical structure;Sa, Sim, Sin, Mul. And theory of type of men, Jung established four type; Tae-Yang-In, Tae-Um-In, So-Yang-In, So-Um-In, They all established the four phase structure, which have things in common. 3. Jung studied the consciousness and unconsciousness and Lee Je Ma studied the Sung-In, Eui, Ye, Ji, and Sim-Yock-Bi, Bak, Tam, Na. I think they have a close relationship. And I think there is relationship between consciousness, unconsciousness to Gun-Ja-Ji-Sim, So-In-Ji-Sim. 4. I think there is thought of relationship between Lee Je Ma's Dae-Dong, Gak-lip, Hang-gi-ji, Hang-gi-hang and Ho-sun, Oh-ak, Sa-sim, Tae-hang and relationship of internal organ's size to Jung's the first function, second function, third function, fourth function. 5. I think the relationship between the type of Jung;thinking type, feeling, type, sensation type, intuition type to the type of Lee Je Ma; Tae-Yang-In, Tae-Um-In, So-Yang-In, So-Yang-In, So-Um-In needs more study.

  • 1. Objectives This study classifies xylographica of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ written by Lee, Je-Ma from 1901 to 1945. 2. Methods Through researching the phrases, I collected and analyzed data from rare book lists for this study 3. Results and Conclusions 1) The first edition of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ was issued in 1901, and the second, the third, the forth, the fifth, the sixth, the seventh, in 1911, 1913, 1914, 1921, 1936, 1941 respectively. 2) The popularized printed editions of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ are not the forth and the seventh, but the fifth and the seventh. 3) The xylographica of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ was mainly issued in Seoul and Hahmhung 4) No further data except the first to seventh editions were found in Korea, although some appear to be in error.
