A New Black Sesame Variety 'Yunheuk' with Lodging Resistance and High Yielding (내도복 다수성 검정깨 신품종 '윤흑')

  • A new sesame variety 'Yunheuk' was developed from Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute in 2007. A cross was made by 'Yoosung' with weak disease resistance and 'Kunheuk' with high yield capacity & quality, followed by pedigree selection, yield test and regional yield trial (RYT) by the sesame breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science and Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute up to 2007. The variety showed higher lodging resistance and more dark seed coloring rather than that of check variety 'Yangheuk'. Average stem length and the number of capsules per plant is 118 cm, 79 cm respectively. Its 1,000 grains weight is about 2.67 g indicating 0.10 g lower than that of 'Yangheuk', and its oil content is about 46.4%. 'Yunheuk' also contains total 2.59 mg/g of such lignans as sesamin and sesamolin. And its dark color density ($L^*$ Value) of seed coat is 22.43 which was about 10% lower than that of check variety. The average yield of 'Yunheuk' was 99.9 kg per 10a at the national-wide regional performance.

  • 'Boseogheugchal', a new black pericarp glutinous rice cultivar (Oriza sativa L.), was developed by the rice breeding team of National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, Suwon, Korea during the period from 1997 to 2008 and released in 2008. It was derived from a cross between SR18638-B-B-B-18-2/ Heugmi H31. The maturity of this cultivar is about 135 days from seedling to heading. This cultivar has about 12 tillers per hill and 94 spikelet numbers per panicle. Ripening ratio is about 72% and 1000 grain weight is 21.6 g in brown rice. This new variety shows grain shattering resistance and susceptible for blast, bacterial leaf blight and stripe virus. 'Boseogheugchal' has glutinous endosperm and low protein contents. It has higher anthocyanin content compared to black pigmented check cultivar 'Hegjinjubyeo'. The yield performance of brown rice was 4.82 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. 'Boseogheugchal' is adaptable to central plain area of Korea.

Changes in the Organic Compound Contents of the Pear Rootstocks Pyrus calleryana and Pyrus betulaefolia Affected by Excessive Soil Moisture (토양 과습처리에 의한 배 대목 Pyrus calleryana 와 Pyrus betulaefolia 집단의 유기물 함량 변화)

  • BACKGROUND: There's a long rainy season during the Summer in Northeast Asia, including Korea. Heavy rainfall during this season causes harm to tree's root, and damped injury in the pear has been continuously reported. Pear Research Institute is breeding damp resistant rootstocks and investigating their mechanisms to relieve damped damages in the pear.METHODS AND RESULTS: Seedlings of Pyrus betulaefolia and P. calleryana were divided into two groups: control and damped, respectively. Damped group was treated by constant irrigation for 77 days and control group was maintained to keep the soil moisture pressure between 0 and -10 kPa. After the treatment, we analysed trees' growth rate, chlorophyll content, amino acids and total phenolic compounds. As a result, P. betulaefolia was sensitive to damped treatment while P. calleryana did not have significant differences between the control and damped treatment. It was observed that total contents for phenolic compounds were dramatically increased in P. betulaefolia while trees' growth rate, chlorophyll b and general amino acid contents were lowered by damping treatment.CONCLUSION: In some pear cultivars, growth habit is suppressed by damped damage. Pyrus calleryana displayed tolerances to damped damage in growth rate and some organic compound contents compared to P. betulaefolia. So we recommend to exploit P. calleryana as a pear rootstock rather than using P. betulaefolia.

CCNU, Vinblastine and Prednisone Treatment for Grade II Dermal Mast Cell Tumor in a Yorkshire terrier dog (CCNU, Vinblastine과 Prednisone으로 병용 치료한 요크셔 테리어 개의 Grade II 피부 비만세포종 증례)

  • An 11-year-old, castrated male Yorkshire terrier dog was presented with multiple plaques on right inguinal region. Grade II mast cell tumor was diagnosed. The dog was treated with Vinblastine and prednisone(PDS) initially. Because of poor response of the dog, CCNU was added for more aggressive treatment. After 5 weeks treatment of with CCNU, vinblastine and PDS, the lesion was improved. Moderate leukopenia was shown after 4 cycles of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy was re-administered since the patient recovered from the leukopenia. Though the same protocol was applied, no improvement of the lesion was observed. Moreover, the general body condition of the dog became worse and was euthanized by the owner's request. Necropsy was not permitted. The survival time was 330 days after start of the chemotherapy.

  • Thermally expandable microcapsules (TEMs) can be expanded upon heating since the activation energy of liquid hydrocarbon at the core of the TEMs increased at high temperature. Due to this property, TEMs are widely used in the industry as blowing agents or light-weight fillers. In this article, chemical blowing agent and TEM were used for making polypropylene (PP) foams, and their mechanical properties were compared. Physical properties (tensile strength, impact strength etc.) of PP foams decreased with increasing the amount of blowing agents while weight of specimen decreased. However, PP foam produced with TEMs showed higher impact strength than the one with a chemical blowing agent. In order to figure out the difference of impact strength, the morphology of PP foamed was investigated. Expanding properties of TEM can be controlled by changing core back distance.

  • With the rapid development of the 4th industrial revolution, the large-sized facilities of agriculture have been developed with high-technologies. However, it is difficult to maintain the optimum environment in large-sized facilities. Although it is essential to control micro-climate properly in large-sized facilities, there are a lot of problems to utilize high-technologies and equipment because of insufficient education for farmers. Most farms have limitations to access to their farm because of prevention of epidemics, exposure of management know-how, and so on. Especially, it is difficult to understand internal environmental factors (airflow, temperature, humidity, etc.) for farmers because these factors are invisible. Recently, Virtual reality technology which allows users to experience various phenomena directly is attracting attention. Virtual reality is very useful technology to visualize airflow and temperature distribution and so on. However, there is no cases applied this technology to agricultural facilities. In this study, research trends of virtual reality in various fields were investigated. In particular, the limitation and possibility of virtual reality technology were analyzed for educating farmers. Finally, the development of virtual reality contents for smart-farm facility were suggested.

Effect of Nitrogen Fertilization levels on Growth and Isoflavone Content in Soybean (질소시비수준이 콩의 생육 및 isoflavone 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • The nitrogen fertilization effect on growth characteristics and isoflavone content was investigated in this study, and isoflavone analyzed by HPLC with photodiode array (PDA) detector and reverse-phase $C_{18}$ column. Fertilization levels were no-fertilization, no nitrogen, 50% decreased in nitrogen, standard and 50% increased in nitrogen fertilization. The 50% increased nitrogen fertilization showed the highest growth characteristics then other fertilization level and the number of pod and seed showed maximum value 31.9 and 72.3, respectively, and seed yield was 2,460 kg/ha. During growth stages, isoflavone content in leaf, stem and root of soybean plants decreased to R5 stage then increased to R7 stage. Isoflavone content according to various nitrogen fertilization condition, in case of none fertilization, no nitrogen, 50% decreased nitrogen fertilization showed higher value than those of standard and 50% increased nitrogen fertilization levels. Aglycon content among the isoflavone isomers showed much higher in plant than in seed. The highest isoflavone content was found in the root of soybean plant parts. Isoflavone content of seed was higher in none, no nitrogen, 50% decreased nitrogen than those of standard and 50% increased nitrogen fertilization.

Residual Effects of Fly Ash, Gypsum, and Shell on Growth and Qualities of Chinese Cabbage in Acidic Soils (산성토양에서 배추 생육과 품질에 대한 석탄회, 석고, 패각의 시용 잔효)

  • In order to evaluate the residual effects of bituminous coal fly ash, gypsum, oyster shell as soil amendments, Chinese cabbage was cultivated on acidic sandy loam soils with low boron content. The soils were amended in the upper 15cm with amendments in previous year and the growth and qualities of plants were analyzed. Amendments treated one year before were, in metric tons per hectare, i) none(Check) ; ii) 80 fly ash(FA) ; iii) 4 shell(SH) ; iv) 56 fly ash + 24 gypsum (FG) ; v) 40 fly ash + 24 gypsum + 0.8 shell(FGS). Yield response in fresh weight of Chinese cabbage was in order of 834% for FGS > 780% for FG > 755% FA > 193% for SH plants. Reducing sugar, vitamin-C, and total nitrogen contents of leaves depending on treatments showed the same tendencies as that in yields, whereas crude fibre opposite to them. In particular, FA, FG, and FGS plants showed normal growth without both boron deficiency symptoms which appeared in Check and SH plants and possibilities of accumulation of heavy metals. In any soils treated with the above amendments, however, magnesium was insufficient.

Evaluation of Ammonia Emission from Arable Soil applied Liquid Manure and Compost (가축분 퇴.액비 시용에 따른 암모니아 휘산량 평가)

  • Emission of ammonia to the atmosphere are considered a threat to the environment. The application of livestock manure and compost contributes significantly to the emission of ammonia from agriculture. The reduction in NH3 losses from field-applied manure and compost would be a good strategy to reduce national $NH_3$ emission. In this study, various application techniques of liquid manure and compost were compared to evaluate their potential for reducing $NH_3$ emission. In compost application, the reductions in $NH_3$ emission were 70 and 15% for immediately rotary after application (IRA) and rotary at 3-day after application (RA-3d) in comparison with surface application (SA). Total ammonia emissions for 13 days, expressed as % ammonia-N applied in compost, were 42, 35.7, and 12.7% for SA, RA-3d, and IRA treatments, respectively. Mean reductions in NH3 emission from application of liquid pig manure were 26 and 50% for rotary harrow after surface broadcast application in spring and fall, respectively, in comparison with surface broadcast application. Ammonia emission rate was decreased with increasing water content in soil due to dilution effect, but this reduction only was temporary up to 12 hours after application and cumulative $NH_3$ emission was increased with increasing water content in soil. However, the delay would be beneficial because it allows time for rotary hallow of the applied liquid pig manure. Therefor, ammonia emission can be reduced by immediately incorporation of liquid manure and compost after surface application.

Soil Chemical Properties and Plant Mineral Contents in Plastic Film House in Southern Part of Korea (남부지방(南部地方) 시설재배지(施設栽培地) 토양의 화학성(化學性)과 작물의 양분함량(養分含量))

  • Chemical properties of soils and mineral contents in plants grown at seventy one regions located in southern part of Korea were surveyed to obtain the basic information for sustainable management of plastic film house soils. The averaged soil chemical properties showed optimum levels in pH, organic matter, available boron, manganese, zinc contents, whereas available phosphate and exchangeable rations were highly accumulated. Available phosphate showed highly positive correlation with continuous cropping period. The contents of phosphate, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the top soils were ranged from 912(Pusan)~1.796mg (Masan) ; $1.52(Pusan){\sim}2.93cmol^+$(Sunchon) ; $7.44(Masan){\sim}18.58cmol^+$(Changweon) ; $2.82(Changnyong){\sim}6.24cmol^+/kg$(Changweon), respectively. There were high levels of phosphorus and potassium in the leaves of plastic film house plants of pepper, cucumber, pimento, chrysanthemum, and carnation. And calcium and magnesium were more than two fold high in fruiting vegetables than flowering plants showing antagonistic utilization against potassium.
