  • In this paper, a curve-fitting channel estimation method is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in a time-varying frequency-selective fading channel. The method can greatly improve channel state information (CSI) estimation accuracy by performing smoothing and interpolation through consecutive curve-fitting processes in both time domain and frequency domain. It first evaluates least-squares (LS) estimates using pilot symbols and then the estimates are approximated to a polynomial with proper degree in the LS error sense, starting from one preferred domain in which pilots we densely distributed. Smoothing, interpolation, and prediction are performed subsequently to obtain CSI estimates for data transmission. The channel estimation processes are completed by smoothing and interpolating CSI estimates in the other domain once again using the channel estimates obtained in one domain. The performance of proposed method is influenced heavily on the time variation and frequency selectivity of channel and pilot arrangement. Hence, a proper degree of polynomial and an optimum approximation interval according to various system and channel conditions are required for curve-fitting. From extensive simulation results in various channel environments, we see that the proposed method performs better than the conventional methods including the optimal Wiener filtering method, in terms of the mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER).

  • Automatic quality inspection by computer vision can be applied and give a solution to the pharmaceutical industry field. Pharmaceutical capsule can be easily affected by flaws like dents, cracks, holes, etc. In order to solve the quality inspection problem, it is required computationally efficient image processing technique like thresholding, boundary edge detection and segmentation and some automated systems are available but they are very expensive to use. In this paper, we have developed a dented capsule image processing technique using edge-based image segmentation, TLS(Total Least Squares) curve fitting technique and adopted low cost camera module for capsule image capturing. We have tested and evaluated the accuracy, training and testing time of the classification recognition algorithms like PCA(Principal Component Analysis), ICA(Independent Component Analysis) and SVM(Support Vector Machine) to show the performance. With the result, PCA, ICA has low accuracy, but SVM has good accuracy to use for classifying the dented capsule.

  • A measured frequency response function can be represented as a ratio of two polynomials. A curve-fitting of frequency responses with Legendre polynomialis suggested in the paper. And the suggested curve-fitting algorithm is based on the least-square error method. Since the Legendre polynomials satisfy the orthogonality condition, the curve-fitting with the polynomials results to more reliable curve-fitting than ordinary polynomial method. Though the proposed curve-fitting with Legendre polynomials cannot cover all frequency range of interest, example shows that the suggested method is quite applicable in a limited frequency band.

  • Morphological luminosity parameters$(\mu_e,\;r_e,\;\mu_0,\;\alpha^{-1})$ and D/B were estimated from the decomposition of surface brightness distributions of 28 extra galaxies. Decomposition was made using the standard non-linear least square fitting method and we used the seeing convolved model to get the central brightness of these galaxies. Masses and $M/L_B$ were calculated using rotational velocities of these galaxies from the fitting to the generalized Toomre's mass model.

  • The precise speed and position control technique for Brushless DC Motor demands accurate position and speed feedback information. Generally, resolver or absolute encoders are used as speed and positiion sensor. But they increase cost and more problem happens at low speed than high speed specially. Therefore, in this paper, optimal speed observer is proposed for decreasing size and cost of whole system. And also, we consider the error problem about the system modeling and measurement at low speed range as well as high speed. The overall system consists of two parts, a drive and a speed observer. We make use of Least square curve fitting algorithm as speed observer and can overcome low resolution by proposed observer. Also, because of using the signal of hall sensor, robust control is possible in low speed as well as high speed for the change of the parameters of the system and disturbance. To construct observer using the signal of hall sensor, we design the pulse multiplier circuit and the software of microprocessor, AT89CC2051. Finally, the performance of the proposed observer is exemplified by some simulations and experiments.

  • The Kachanov-Rabotnov (K-R) creep model was proposed to accurately model the long-term creep curves above $10^5$ hours of Alloy 617. To this end, a series of creep data was obtained from creep tests conducted under different stress levels at $950^{\circ}C$. Using these data, the creep constants used in the K-R model and the modified K-R model were determined by a nonlinear least square fitting (NLSF) method, respectively. The K-R model yielded poor correspondence with the experimental curves, but the modified K-R model provided good agreement with the curves. Log-log plots of ${\varepsilon}^{\ast}$-stress and ${\varepsilon}^{\ast}$-time to rupture showed good linear relationships. Constants in the modified K-R model were obtained as ${\lambda}$=2.78, and $k=1.24$, and they showed behavior close to stress independency. Using these constants, long-term creep curves above $10^5$ hours obtained from short-term creep data can be modeled by implementing the modified K-R model.

  • It is necessary to check the curvature of selected covariates in regression diagnostics. There are various graphical methods using residual plots based on least squares fitting. The sensitivity of LS fitting to outliers can distort their residuals, making the identification of the unknown function difficult to impossible. In this paper, we compare combining conditional expectation and residual plots(CERES Plots) between least square fit and robust fits using Huber M-estimator. Robust CERES will be far less distorted than their LS counterparts in the presence of outliers and hence, will be more useful in identifying the unknown function.
