  • This study addresses the need to adopt teaching-learning approaches in physical therapy education that develop links between theory and clinical practice in a meaningful way. Problem-based learning (PBL) is presented as a useful way to educate physical therapy for the future. The essential characteristics of problem-based learning include: curricular organization around problems rather than disciplines; an integrated curriculum rather than one separated into clinical and theoretical components; and an inherent emphasis on cognitive skills as well as on knowledge. PBL as implemented in the health sciences, is an educational method in which the focus of learning is a small-group tutorial in which students work through health care scenarios. The goals of the health care scenarios are to provide a context for learning, to activate prior knowledge, to motivate students, and to stimulate discussion. Learning is student-centered rather than faculty-centered, and self-directed learning is emphasized. Whereas the former focuses on critical thinking and clinical judgement, the latter's emphasis is on clinical competency. The physical therapist (PT) program at Cheju Halla college is a partial integrated problem-based curriculum. The history and process of PBL in general and in the PT program are reviewed. Long-term advocates of PBL stress that it is the only known method for preparing future professionals to be able to adapt to change, learning how to reason critically, enabling a holistic approach to health.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dietary behavior and life stress in adolescence is related to growth rate and learning ability. This study was conducted to identify the relations between dietary habits, dietary attitude nutritional knowledge and life stress among high school girls in Korea and China. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The subjects of this study were 221 high school girls in Korea and 227 high school girls in China. The questionnaire were about dietary habits, dietary attitude, nutritional knowledge and life stress. RESULTS: The dietary habits of chinese girls were healthier than those of Korean girls with a significant difference (P < .001). There was no significant difference in dietary attitude between Korean girls and Chinese girls. Korean girls had more nutritional knowledge than Chinese girls with a significant difference (P < .001). Korean girls did less physical exercise but spent more time watching TV and using PCs, compared to Chinese girls. Korean girls' degree of confidence in nutrition information that they had learned and their performance in their real lives were low. Also, they had a low level of awareness of the need for nutritional education. There was no significant difference in life stress between the two groups. Dietary habits had a significantly negative correlation with life stress in both Korean and Chinese girls (P < .01, P < .001). As for Chinese students, dietary attitude had a negative correlation with life stress with a significant difference (P < .05). As for Korean girls, nutritional knowledge had a negative correlation with life stress with a significant difference (P < .05), which means as life stress was less, dietary habits were better. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that effective nutrition education programs should include components that encourage application of learned nutrition information to real life, increase physical exercise and reduce life stress.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of sand play therapy on the parenting stress and saliva cortisol levels of parents undergoing child counseling programs. The study was conducted with 13 parents who were undergoing child counseling programs. The sessions were held every week for 45 minutes from July, 2011 to September, 2011. To evaluate the effects of sand play therapy, pre test and post test were conducted and the results were then analyzed. The therapy sessions consist of parents making sand boxes, and this was done without consideration of any particular theme. The instrument used was Abidin (1990)'s Parenting Stress Instrument (PSI). Saliva cortisol levels were obtained at the pre-post stage of the sand play therapy. The data were analyzed by means of frequency and the Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test was conducted by the SPSS. The major findings were as follows; There were significant differences in terms of the decreases in the areas of perception of all the parenting stresses examined, including daily life stress, child temperament stress, child relationship stress, and learning-expectation stress, as well as in saliva cortisol levels. Finally, this study suggests that parenting stress and saliva cortisol levels have a positive relationship, and the effects of sand play therapy were significant with decreases in parenting stress and saliva cortisol levels. There is a clear need for parents undergoing child counseling programs to engage in sand play therapy to decrease parenting stress and saliva cortisol levels.

  • Based on the capture-emission energy (CEE) maps of CMOS devices, a physics-informed machine learning model for the bias temperature instability (BTI)-induced threshold voltage shifts and low frequency noise is presented. In order to incorporate physics theories into the machine learning model, the integration of artificial neural network (IANN) is employed for the computation of the threshold voltage shifts and low frequency noise. The model combines the computational efficiency of IANN with the optimal estimation of Gaussian mixture model (GMM) with soft clustering. It enables full lifetime prediction of BTI under various stress and recovery conditions and provides accurate prediction of the dynamic behavior of the original measured data.

  • The major goals of this study are to find the factors that enhance self-directed math learning in college math classes and to provide the students with the opportunities to check and develop their self-directed math learning attitude. For these research goals, we prepared the questionnaires that asked about their learning motivations, basic learning ability, self-discipline strategies, and self-directed learning strategies. Another purpose of the questionnaires was to give them the chances to check and improve their attitude toward those learning strategies, motivation and ability. From the research results, we find that the important factors for self-directed learning are internal & external motivations, concentration ability, and the goal-setting and plan-making abilities. In addition, concentration ability, good habit, stress-control, recognition of math value, and self-directing ability are found to be necessary for the desirable learning environment. On the other hand, we find that the ability to perform note-taking, class preparation and review, time-control, and test-control is required for the selection and practice of self-fitting learning strategies. Finally, we provided our own self-directed math learning model. Our model, containing the necessary factors for self-directed math learning, is the revised and modified one of Knowles(1975)'s 5 stage self-directed learning model that comprises diagnosis of learning desire, setting learning goals, grasping human&material resources, selection and practice of proper learning strategies, and evaluation of learning results.

  • The measurement of residual stresses by the hole-drilling method has been commonly used to evaluate residual stresses in structural members. In this method, eccentricity can usually occur between the hole center and rosette gage center. In this study, the error due to the hole eccentricity is predicted using the artificial neural network. The neural network has trained training examples of stress ratio, normalized eccentricity, off-centered direction and stress error using backpropagation learning process. The prediction results of the error using the trained neural network are good agreement with FE analyzed ones.

In this method, eccentricity can usually occur between the hole center and rosette gage center. In this study, the error due to the hole eccentricity is corrected using the neural network. The neural network has trained training examples of normalized eccentricity, eccentric direction and direction of maximum stress at eccentric case using backpropagation learning process. The trained neural network could corrected the error of measured residual stress in experiments with hole eccentricity. The proposed neural network is very useful for correction of the error due to hole eccentricity in hole-drilling method.

  • This work is concerned with construction of the intelligence stress predictor far compression strength evaluation using neural network-ultrasonic waves. The contact pressure in jointed plates was measured by using ultrasonic technique. Neural network is used to evaluate and predict contact pressure from the results of the calibration curves. The organized neural system was leaned with the accuracy of 99%, as a result of learning the ultrasonic echo ratio to the contact pressure measurement between SM45C and STS410 materials. And it could be evaluated and predicted with the accuracy of 90% in the evaluation of ultrasonic echo ratio difference in the same surface roughness and contact pressure, and 85% in the prediction of virtual ultrasonic echo ratio. Thus the proposed stress predictor is very useful for the evaluation and prediction of the contact pressure between SM45C and STS410 materials.
