  • This article aims to compare the accuracy of the Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) approaches in recognizing Sundanese characters. Based on experiments, the level of accuracy that has been obtained by the BPNN technique is 95.23% and the LVQ technique is 66.66%. Meanwhile, the learning time that has been required by the BPNN technique is 2 minutes 45 seconds and then the LVQ method is 17 minutes 22 seconds. The results indicated that the BPNN technique was better than the LVQ technique in recognizing Sundanese characters in accuracy and learning time.

  • As a diagnostic image of hospitl, the utilization of digital image is steadily increasing. Image coding is indispensable for storing and compressing an enormous amount of diagnostic images economically and effectively. In this paper adaptive two stage vector quantization based on Kohonen's neural network for the compression of cardioangiography among typical angiography of radiographic image sequences is presented and the performance of the coding scheme is compare and gone over. In an attempt to exploit the known characteristics of changes in cardioangiography, relatively large blocks of image are quantized in the first stage and in the next stage the bloks subdivided by the threshold of quantization error are vector quantized employing the neural network of frequency sensitive competitive learning. The scheme is employed because the change produced in cardioangiography is due to such two types of motion as a heart itself and body motion, and a contrast dye material injected. Computer simulation shows that the good reproduction of images can be obtained at a bit rate of 0.78 bits/pixel.

  • The necessity of diagnosis of the rotating machinery which is widely used in the industry is increasing. Many research has been conducted to manipulate field vibration signal data for diagnosing the fault of designated machinery. As the pattern recognition tool of that signal, neural network which use usually back-propagation algorithm was used in the diagnosis of rotating machinery. In this paper, self-organizing feature map(SOFM) which is unsupervised learning algorithm is used in the abnormal vibration diagnosis of rotating machinery and then learning vector quantization(LVQ) which is supervised teaming algorithm is used to improve the quality of the classifier decision regions.

  • The Self Creating and Organizing (SCO) is a new architecture and one of the unsupervized learning algorithm for the artificial neural network. SCO begins with only one output node which has a sufficiently wide response range, and the response ranges of all the nodes decrease automatically whether adapting the weights of existing node or creating a new node. It is compared to the Kohonen's Self Organizing Feature Map (SOFM). The results show that SCONN has lots of advantages over other competitive learning architecture.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy learning rule which is the fuzzified version of LVQ(Learning Vector Quantization). This fuzzy learning rule 3 uses fuzzy learning rates. instead of the traditional learning rates. LVQ uses the same learning rate regardless of correctness of classification. But, the new fuzzy learning rule uses the different learning rates depending on whether classification is correct or not. The new fuzzy learning rule is integrated into the improved IAFC(Integrated Adaptive Fuzzy Clustering) neural network. The improved IAFC neural network is both stable and plastic. The iris data set is used to compare the performance of the supervised IAFC neural network 3 with the performance of backprogation neural network. The results show that the supervised IAFC neural network 3 is better than backpropagation neural network.

  • In this paper, we study the enhancement of VQ (Vector Quantization) design for text independent speaker recognition. In a concrete way, we present a non-iterative method which makes a vector quantization codebook and this method performs non-iterative learning so that the computational complexity is epochally reduced The proposed Classified Space VQ (CSVQ) design method for text Independent speaker recognition is generalized from Semi-noniterative VQ design method for text dependent speaker recognition. CSVQ contrasts with the existing desiEn method which uses the iterative learninE algorithm for every traininE speaker. The characteristics of a CSVQ design is as follows. First, the proposed method performs the non-iterative learning by using a Classified Space Codebook. Second, a quantization region of each speaker is equivalent for the quantization region of a Classified Space Codebook. And the quantization point of each speaker is the optimal point for the statistical distribution of each speaker in a quantization region of a Classified Space Codebook. Third, Classified Space Codebook (CSC) is constructed through Sample Vector Formation Method (CSVQ1, 2) and Hyper-Lattice Formation Method (CSVQ 3). In the numerical experiment, we use the 12th met-cepstrum feature vectors of 10 speakers and compare it with the existing method, changing the codebook size from 16 to 128 for each Classified Space Codebook. The recognition rate of the proposed method is 100% for CSVQ1, 2. It is equal to the recognition rate of the existing method. Therefore the proposed CSVQ design method is, reducing computational complexity and maintaining the recognition rate, new alternative proposal and CSVQ with CSC can be applied to a general purpose recognition.

  • In this paper, we study the enhancement of VQ (Vector Quantization) design for text dependent speaker recognition. In a concrete way, we present the non-Iterative method which makes a vector quantization codebook and this method Is nut Iterative learning so that the computational complexity is epochally reduced. The proposed semi-noniterative VQ design method contrasts with the existing design method which uses the iterative learning algorithm for every training speaker. The characteristics of a semi-noniterative VQ design is as follows. First, the proposed method performs the iterative learning only for the reference speaker, but the existing method performs the iterative learning for every speaker. Second, the quantization region of the non-reference speaker is equivalent for a quantization region of the reference speaker. And the quantization point of the non-reference speaker is the optimal point for the statistical distribution of the non-reference speaker In the numerical experiment, we use the 12th met-cepstrum feature vectors of 20 speakers and compare it with the existing method, changing the codebook size from 2 to 32. The recognition rate of the proposed method is 100% for suitable codebook size and adequate training data. It is equal to the recognition rate of the existing method. Therefore the proposed semi-noniterative VQ design method is, reducing computational complexity and maintaining the recognition rate, new alternative proposal.

  • To enhance the fault diagnosis ability for the dissolved gas analysis(DGA) of the power transformer, this paper proposes a learning vector quantization(LVQ) for the incipient fault recognition. LVQ is suitable expecially for pattern recognition such as fault diagnosis of power transformer using DGA because it improves the performance of Kohonen neural network by placing emphasis on the classification around the decision boundary. The capabilities of the proposed diagnosis system for the transformer DGA decision support have been extensively verified through the practical test data collected from Korea Electrical Power Corporation.
