During therapy sessions, feedback is often provided concurrently by the physical therapist as the patient attempts to perform a movement and after the movement attempt. This feedback is provided to enhance the patient's balance abilities. However, recent studies in nondisabled populations have suggested that frequent feedback may be detrimental to retention or learning of motor skills. This study compared the effects of 100% relative frequency of knowledge of performance (KP) with 66% relative frequency of KP for motor learning on balance retraining in patients with hemiplegia. Twenty patients with hemiplegic were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups. The acquisition phase consisted of 16 blocks of 5 trials for 2 days (80 total practice trials). The retention phase consisted of 2 blocks of a short-term retention test, one day after the end of the acquisition phase and a long-term retention test, one week after the end of the short-term retention test. In the 100% feedback condition, participants received feedback after every practice trial. A faded KP schedule was used in the 66% condition. No significant differences were found between the two groups during all experimental phases (acquisition and retention phases), (p>.05). However, there were significant decreases in balance index for both groups of acquisition phase (p<.05). These results suggest that 66% relative frequency of KP is not more effective than 100% relative frequency of KP with respect to retention over time when hemiparetic patients attempt to learn balance.
Existing science education that excludes narrative thinking impedes the understanding of the context of workbook content. The object of this research is to develop a storytelling-learning program based on narrative thinking to elevate learners' interest in science and expand their inventive problem-solving abilities. Following an analysis of the current Korean curriculum, eight types of storytelling materials that utilize local content were developed for grades 7-9. The learning program used quest storytelling and was designed such that learning activities such as investigation, discussion, and experimentation were included in the process of solving each quest. Learners experienced an interest in storytelling learning resulting from participation in this storytelling-learning program. Moreover, learners demonstrated inventive problem-solving abilities in the process of completing the stories. During the process of assembling the storytelling materials, the students interacted with enthusiasm and generated ideas. The teachers indicated a positive feedback to the storytelling program as a new attempt to stimulate learners' interests. In the future, with continuous development and application, storytelling-science-learning programs that base science learning on narrative thinking are expected to be successful.
Purpose: This study sought to identify the factors influencing learning motivation and demotivation in online dental technology students. Methods: A survey was conducted from October 1 to 30, 2021, on 188 dental technology students. The collected data were processed using the IBM SPSS IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 22.0 statistical program (IBM), and frequency, factor, and one-way ANOVA analyses were performed, for which the significance was set at 0.05. Results: It was found that the main online learning motivation factors were the usefulness of the learning content, interest, and confidence in the activities, the relationships with the teachers and friends, the feedback, and learning satisfaction. The factors that reduced the students' online learning motivation were interaction difficulties, maladaptation to the self-directed learning environment, the inadequate number of learning activities, and activity difficulty. Conclusion: Based on the identified online class motivation and demotivation factors, better systematic management and increased research are needed to improve the quality of non-face-to-face classes.
Recently, a wide variety of studies on future learning have appeared owing to rapid advances in information and communication technology (ICT) and increased discussion about core competencies in twenty-first-century learning. These studies, though insufficient in number, cover various fields such as architecture (design of the learning space), education (learning model), and technology (adaptation of mobile devices). However, these studies focus on mainstream students and do not discuss the future situation of inclusive education with regard to both mainstream and students with physical disabilities. Hence, in order to fill this gap, the present study explores the perceptions and ideas held by special education preservice teachers on the future learning space with regard to school design and peer-to-peer feedback. For this purpose, these preservice teachers' design proposals about future school were collected and analyzed. In conclusion, special education preservice teachers perceive the future learning space as an inclusive environment in which smart technology is incorporated. Future learning environment were categorized in terms of flexible, ubiquitous technology, physical and mental health, safety, and spaces with facilities for students with physical disabilities.
Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the variation in perceptions about problem-based learning(PBL) according to the level of academic achievement and learning attitude in the nursing students of a junior college (3-year program). Method: Students (n=39) learned the respiratory and cardiac system with seven PBL packages and group-based learning for a semester in 2002. Students were asked to write reflective journals that focused on their learning perception after an experience with each learning package. A total of 208 journals were used for analysis. Result: Students positively perceived that PBL making them increase their sense of responsibility for learning and felt satisfaction with the learning process, and had a confidence in the use of clinical nursing interventions. On the other hand, they negatively perceived that PBL was a burden because it took more time than traditional learning tasks, and they experienced an anxiety about regular tests and felt conflicts and diffidences in the learning process. The negative perceptions were expressed more often from students with a low academic achievement and low learning attitude compared to others. Conclusion: Students perceived the PBL as effective in understanding the learning concepts in the clinical practice environment. PBL need to be supplemented by feedback-based lecture and facilitative strategies for academically low-achieved students. Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the variation in perceptions about problem-based learning(PBL) according to the level of academic achievement and learning attitude in the nursing students of a junior college (3-year program). For the purpose of modeling EEG signal which has nonstationary and nonlinear dynamic characteristics, this paper propose a state feedback real time recurrent neural network model. The state feedback real time recurrent neural network is structured to have memory structure in the state of hidden layers so that it has arbitrary dynamics and ability to deal with time-varying input through its own temporal operation. For the model test, Mackey-Glass time series is used as a nonlinear dynamic system and the model is applied to the prediction of three types of EEG, alpha wave, beta wave and epileptic EEG. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed model is better than that of other neural network models which are compared in this paper in some view points of the converging speed in learning stage and normalized mean square error for the test data set.
This paper explores a content-based image retrieval framework with relevance feedback based on genetic algorithm (GA). This framework adopts GA to learn the user preferences using the similarity functions defined for all available descriptors. The objective of the GA-based learning methods is to learn the user preferences using the similarity functions and to find a descriptor combination function that best represents the user perception. Experiments were performed to validate the proposed frameworks. The experiments employed the natural image databases and color and texture descriptors to represent the content of database images. The proposed frameworks were compared with the other two relevance feedback methods regarding effectiveness in image retrieval tasks. Experiment results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.
This study is aimed at investigating the aspects of peer correction and responses of English composition in the web-based class. The participants for this study are students enrolled in the 'preparatory college cyber study center'. Two assignments were given--composition with no feedback and composition followed by student feedback. The participants' feedbacks, responses, and attitudes in peer interaction were analysed. The processes of these two assignments were also compared. The results were as follows: First, students' competitive attitude changed into cooperative attitude when peer-revision was followed. Second, both formal and content feedback were shown in the cyber composition class just as in the classroom composition class, but under no specific guidance, the majority of students' feedbacks were formal feedbacks. Third, some characteristics of web-based writing were found. In the web-based writing class where around a hundred students are enrolled. students' feedbacks were inevitable. The results of this study supported the use of students feedback.
