  • A single cross hybrid, Heukjinjuchal, is a black color waxy corn (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at NICS in 2008. Heukjinjuchal was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KBW24 as seed parent and KBW2 as pollen parent. Ear length and ear diameter of Heukjinjuchal was 16.0 cm and 4.4 cm, respectively. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was 89%, similar with that of a check hybrid, Chalok1. It is resistant to Northern corn leaf blight disease and also lodging tolerant. Fresh ear yield of Heukjinjuchal comparable with those of a check hybrid, Chalok1 in regional yield trials for three years. Seed production of this hybrid is relatively easy because of well overlapping period of silking and pollen dispersal between the two parents. This cultivar would be well adaptable to the whole country.

  • An Asiatic lily cultivar 'Yeri' was developed in 2005 at National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea. The cross was made in 1993 between Asiatic lily 'Geneve', a light pink colored cultivar, and 'Montreux', deep purple colored cultivar. The first selection was done and was tentatively named as 'A95-68' in 1995. After in vitro multiplication and bulbing production, growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 1996 to 2003. The evaluation of characteristics was performed and named as 'Wongyo C1-19' in 2005 that was registered as 'Yeri' to the registration office of Korea Seed & Variety Service. 'Yeri' flowered at the first of July and grew average 34.6 cm stem in length. Flowers bloomed facing upward, unspotted in petals and deep purple (RHS, RP58A). The size of flower was 13.3 cm. Mean petal length and width was 7.7 cm and 2.7 cm, respectively. Leaves were 5.1 cm long and 0.5 cm wide, respectively. The weight and size of bulb were 9.6 g and 11.7 cm, respectively. Year-round flowering can be done by storing the bulb under $-1.5^{\circ}C$ conditions. For forced cultivation, it was necessary to add calcium to the fertilizer or remove side scales to prevent leaf scorch. It was needed to control Botrytis disease in wet season.

  • Tomato crops are highly affected by tomato diseases, and if not prevented, a disease can cause severe losses for the agricultural economy. Therefore, there is a need for a system that quickly and accurately diagnoses various tomato diseases. In this paper, we propose a system that classifies nine diseases as well as healthy tomato plants by applying various pretrained deep learning-based CNN models trained on an ImageNet dataset. The tomato leaf image dataset obtained from PlantVillage is provided as input to ResNet, Xception, and DenseNet, which have deep learning-based CNN architectures. The proposed models were constructed by adding a top-level classifier to the basic CNN model, and they were trained by applying a 5-fold cross-validation strategy. All three of the proposed models were trained in two stages: transfer learning (which freezes the layers of the basic CNN model and then trains only the top-level classifiers), and fine-tuned learning (which sets the learning rate to a very small number and trains after unfreezing basic CNN layers). SGD, RMSprop, and Adam were applied as optimization algorithms. The experimental results show that the DenseNet CNN model to which the RMSprop algorithm was applied output the best results, with 98.63% accuracy.

  • Plant specific gene family, NAC (NAM, ATAF, and CUC) transcription factors have been characterized for their roles in plant growth, development, and stress tolerance. In this study, we isolated OsNAC69 gene and analyzed expression level by inoculation of bacterial leaf blight pathogen, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). NAC transcription factor family can be divided into five groups (I-V). On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, OsNAC69 was fall into group II. OsNAC69 was strongly induced 1 hr after infected with Xoo. To investigate its biological function in the rice, we constructed vector for overexpression in rice, and then generated transgenic rice lines. Gene expression of OsNAC69-overexpressed transgenic rice lines were analyzed by northern blot. Analysis of disease resistance to pathogen Xoo, nine OsNAC69-overexpressed transgenic rice lines showing high expression level of OsNAC69 were shown more resistant than wild type. These results suggest that OsNAC69 gene may play regulatory role during pathogen infection.

  • A new vegetable peanut cultivar "Charmwon" (Arachis hypogaea ssp. fastigiata.L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang 2006. It was developed from the cross between the disease resistant cultivar "HYQ(CG)S-10" and the high-yielding cultivar "Sinkwang". "Charmwon" which has been classified as Shinpung plant type is less branch number with early flowering and ellipse-shaped large kernel. Each pod which showed very shallow constriction had two grains with red testa and 100 seed weight was 90g in the regional yield trials (RYT). This variety also showed higher free sugar and protein contents in seed quality, and had more resistant to early and late leaf spot diseases compared with check one. In the regional yield trials "Charmwon" was out-yielded than check variety by 18% with 8.93 ton/ha for fresh pod and by 4% with 3.95 ton/ha for grain.

  • While rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch) was identified as a host of at least five viruses, including Rehmannia mosaic virus (ReMV), Youcai mosaic virus (YoMV), Broad bean wilt virus 2 (BBWV2), Plantago asiatica mosaic virus (PlAMV), and Rehmannia virus 1 (ReV1), viral incidence surveys have not been performed yet in rehmannia fields in Korea. In this study, we performed field surveys during 2017-2018 to investigate the incidence of 5 major viruses in rehmannia. A total of 145 symptomatic samples were collected from the rehmannia fields in major cultivation areas of Korea. Molecular diagnosis assays showed that all the collected leaf samples were infected with more than two viruses. Particularly, two species of Tobamovirus, ReMV and YoMV, were detected in all the samples. In addition, our analysis showed that the root stocks of 4 rehmannia cultivars were infected with at least two viruses. Since rehmannia is propagated by vegetative propagation, it is highly important to produce virus-free root stocks of rehmannia to control virus diseases in rehmannia.

  • Saemimyeon, a Tongil type, medium-late maturing rice variety, is especially used for preparing rice noodles. Its high amylose content was developed to fit market demands and to be affordable for rice processing industries. One of the high yielding lines, Milyang181 (Hanareum), was used in the final three-way cross of $IR50^*2$/YR18241-B-B-115-1-1 for yield improvement and cultivation stabilization, including disease resistance. YR24235-10-1-3, a high yielding and compact plant type, was selected and named Milyang278 after yield test at NICS (RDA, Miryang) in 2010. It was subjected to regional yield test at six sites in the middle and southern plain areas of South Korea. Saemimyeon heading occurs on August 12 and is a mid-late maturing cultivar, with resistance to leaf blast, rice stripe virus, and bacterial blight (K1-K3a), but it is susceptible to major diseases and insect pest infestation. Saemimyeon showed a high amylose content of 26.7%, with a relatively low KOH digestion value of 3.5, which are key factors in rice noodles and pasta processing. In the local adaptability tests, the yield of Saemimyeon was 7.08 MT/ha-an increase of approximately 106% compared to that of Dasan. Thus, Saemimyeon is suitable for cultivation in the southern and middle plain areas of South Korea.

  • This study was performed to investigate total phenolic contents, anti-oxidant, biological disease-related enzyme inhibitory, and anti-microbial effects of extracts of Lonicera morrowii leaves prepared with water and 40% ethanol. Anti-oxidative activities of the extracts increased in a dose-dependent manner and were very high even at low phenolic concentration. At phenolic concentrations ranging between 50 and 200 ㎍/mL, the water and ethanol extracts inhibited 39.34-76.35 and 47.53-99.83% of xanthine oxidase activity, 30.21-79.06, and 59.40-87.14% of angiotensin converting enzyme activity, and 59.81-80.35 and 36.06-63.58% of α-glucosidase activity, respectively. All inhibitory effect were increased in a dose-dependent manner. In the paper disc agar diffusion assay against seven microbes, L. morrowii extracts had anti-bacteria activities against Helicobacter pylori, Propionibacterium acne but no effect against other bacteria. These results indicate that the extracts from L. morrowii leaves have the possibility to be developed as a physiologically functional source for prevention of adult diseases.
