  • Canine babesiosis has been scarcely investigated in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Although it is known that Babesia gibsoni is its primary causative agent, its clinical presentation has not been completely clarified in the ROK. Consequently, the aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical appearance of this parasitic infection based on the anamnesis of the patient and compare of hematological and biochemical test results. Four hundred whole blood samples from patients with a presumptive diagnosis of tick-borne disease were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify the Babesia spp. 18S rRNA gene and by a rapid diagnostic test kit (VetAll Laboratories®) to detect B. gibsoni seroreactive animals. Thirty-six (9.0%) dogs were PCR-positive but only 24 (6.0%) were seropositive. The investigation revealed that all the courses of the disease are present in the ROK, with the acute course being predominant. The acute course tends to consist of inappetence, lethargy, pyrexia, gastrointestinal symptoms, and occasionally hematuria. It also occurs with common hematological abnormalities, such as thrombocytopenia and anemia, and to a lesser extent biochemical abnormalities, such as hyperbilirubinemia, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated liver enzymes. This research shows that B. gibsoni is an endemic hemoparasite capable of producing a variety of clinical manifestations in dogs. For its accurate diagnosis, a descriptive history of the clinical signs, hematology, and biochemical profile of the patient, along with a well-performing PCR assay, are essential. These findings will help in planning pragmatic preventive strategies against this potent threat in the ROK.

  • Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a zoonotic, tick-borne RNA virus of the genus Bandavirus (Family Phenuiviridae), mainly reported in China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea (Korea). For the purpose of this study, a total of 3,898 adult and nymphal ticks of species Haemaphysalis longicornis (94.2%), Haemaphysalis flava (5.0%), Ixodes nipponensis (0.8%), and 1 specimen of Ixodes ovatus, were collected from the Deogyusan National Park, Korea, between April 2016 and June 2018. A single-step reverse transcriptase-nested PCR was performed, targeting the S segment of the SFTSV RNA. Total infection rate (IR) of SFTSV in individual ticks was found to be 6.0%. Based on developmental stages, IR was 5.3% in adults and 6.0% in nymphs. The S segment sequences obtained from PCR were divided into 17 haplotypes. All haplotypes were phylogenetically clustered into clades B-2 and B-3, with 92.7% sequences in B-2 and 7.3% in B-3. These observations indicate that the Korean SFTSV strains were closer to the Japanese than the Chinese strains. Further epidemiological studies are necessary to better understand the characteristics of the Korean SFTSV and its transmission cycle in the ecosystem.

  • Background: Emergent and re-emergent canine tick-borne infections are attracting increasing attention worldwide. The rise in pet ownership and the close relationship between dogs and their owners are the most concerning factors because dogs may act as competent reservoirs for human tick-transmitted infectious agents. Objectives: This study contributes to the epidemiological surveillance of canine tick-transmitted infections with zoonotic risk in the Republic of Korea (ROK) by investigating the seroprevalence of the pathogens, Anaplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, and Ehrlichia canis. Methods: Four hundred and thirty whole blood samples from domestic dogs were collected in seven metropolitan cities and nine provinces in the ROK and tested using SensPERT Ab test kits (VetAll Laboratories®) to detect seroreactive animals. Results: The seroprevalence rates identified were 9.8% (42/430) for Anaplasma spp., 2.8% (12/430) for B. burgdorferi, and 1.4% (6/430) for E. canis. The risk factors evaluated in this study that could be associated with the development of a humoral immune response, such as sex, age, and history of tick exposure, were similar. There was only one exception for dogs seroreactive to Anaplasma spp., where the risk factor "tick exposure" was statistically significant (p = 0.047). Conclusions: This serological survey exhibited the widespread presence of Anaplasma spp., B. burgdorferi, and E. canis throughout the ROK. Hence, dogs may play a key role as the sentinel animals of multiple zoonotic infectious agents in the country.

  • The aim of this study is to empirically explore the operational spillover effect among companies within chaebol groups, prominent corporate conglomerates in South Korea. Chaebols are known for their horizontal and vertical integration, fostering close collaboration among their constituent companies from a supply chain standpoint. Existing literature highlights the sharing of tangible and intangible resources within chaebol structures, leading to increased efficiency by minimizing transaction costs through resource sharing. This research investigates whether operational management performance within chaebol structures can be transmitted through cooperative resource utilization. To achieve this objective, we categorize leading companies and affiliate companies within chaebols and examine whether the operational management performance of leading companies significantly influences that of affiliate companies. Data on conglomerates, as defined by the Korea Fair Trade Commission, were collected, along with information on companies within these groups. Subsequently, the company with the highest revenue within each group was identified as the leading company, while the remaining companies were designated as affiliate companies. Our analysis reveals a significant positive relationship between the performance of inventory and facility resource management of leading companies and that of affiliate companies. This study sheds light on the transfer of operational management performance within conglomerates from a managerial perspective, underscoring the importance of reinforcing cooperation systems within the chaebol group. Furthermore, this research contributes to the academic discourse by delineating conglomerates from an operational management perspective and empirically demonstrating the transfer effect of operational management performance.

  • The influences of ram pressure on the performances of tilting-pad journal bearings are investigated experimentally. The test rig consists of a single tilting-pad and a rotating journal. Film thicknesses and pressure distribution of the lubricating film are measured continuously for several values of coordinate of the pivot position and journal speed. The findings of the investigation are as follows: (]) According as the journal speed increases the ram pressure increases, maximum pressure decreases and the pivot position which maximize the minimum film thickness shifts toward the leading edge. (2) The ram pressure makes it possible to generate the converging wedge and the positive pressure between the pad and the journal even when the pad is supported at the points between the leading edge and the center of the pad. (3) The influence of the ram pressure on the performance of tilting pad bearings is significant and must be considered in the design of these bearings.
