The main objective was to develop and assess a dynamic fate and transport model for lead in air, soil, sediment, water and vegetation. Daejeon was chosen as the study area for its relatively high contamination and emission levels. The model was assessed by comparing model predictions with measured concentrations in multi-media and atmospheric deposition flux. Given a lead concentration in air, the model could predict the concentrations in water and soil within a factor of five. Sensitivity analysis indicated that effective compartment volumes, rain intensity, scavenging ratio, run off, and foliar uptake were critical to accurate model prediction. Important implications include that restriction of air emission may be necessary in the future to protect the soil quality objective as the contamination level in soil is predicted to steadily increase at the present emission level and that direct discharge of lead into the water body was insignificant as compared to atmospheric deposition fluxes. The results strongly indicated that atmospheric emission governs the quality of the whole environment. Use of the model developed in this study would provide quantitative and integrated understanding of the cross-media characteristics and assessment of the relationships of the contamination levels among the multi-media environment.

We present a case of a young female patient with fulminant hepatitis who showed an altered biodistribution of Ga-67, after being scanned twice at 10 month intervals. On initial scan, uplake of Ga-67 was increased in the liver, kidneys, and skeletons. Increased hepatic Ga-67 uptake may be explained by increased transferrin unbound Ga-67 that was taken up by the inflamed liver. The saturation of iron-binding proteins due to multiple transfusions may lead to increased renal and skeletal Ga-67 uptake. On follow-up scan hepatic Ga-67 uptake was markedly increased. Also increased Ga-67 uptake in the axial skeleton and normalized renal uptake were shown. The findings were consistent with iron deficiency anemia. This case demonstrates altered Ga-67 biodistribution associated with multiple transfusions, fulminant hepatitis, and iron deficiency anemia.

This experiment was performed to clarify the effects of /sup 60/Co gamma irradiation on secretory function, amylase activity and contents of nucleic acids of parotid gland in rat. Experimental animals were divided into 6th hours, 3rd, 7th, 14th and 28th days after irradiation and control. The experimental animals are singly irradiated with 20Gy (2,000rad) through protective lead block. Secretory function of parotid gland was evaluted by uptake and clearance of /sup 99m/TcO₄. /sup 99m/TcO₄. 0.2μ ci/gm, was injected into peritonium in uptake groups. Rats were sacrified with cervical dislocation after 30 minutes and gland was excised. In the clearance group. pilocarpine nitrate (8㎎/㎏) was intraperitoneally injected at 30 minutes after /sup 99m/TcO₄ injection and rats were sacrified 30 minutes after pilocarpine injection. Radioactivity of excised parotid gland was measured by using of gamma counter and stimulation-secretion coefficients, uptake radioactivity divided by clearance radioactivity, was calculated. Amylase activity and contents of DNA and RNA were determined by spectrophotometry. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In the uptake test, the radioactivity of /sup 99m/TcO₄ per unit weight increase in experimental group except 6th hours group, compared with control groups and showed a peak at 3rd days after irradiation. 2. In the clearance test, the radioactivity of /sup 99m/cO₄per unit weight rose to a peak at 3rd days after irradiation and gradually recovered thereafter. 3. Stimulation-secretion coefficient of parotid gland decreased at 6th hours, 3rd and 7th days after irradiation, and gradually increased. 4. Amylase activity of parotid gland decreased in 3rd and 7th days group, and especially lowest in 3rd days after irradiation. 5. The contents of DNA showed no definite difference in all the experimental groups, but RNA was seemed to decrease with time after irradiation.
Purpose: 99mTc-mebrofenin hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HBS) is an important and clinically useful diagnostic imaging study for detecting complications after liver transplantation. CT contrast agents due to their high atomic numbers, lead to a decrease in gamma ray count rates. This study investigated the impact of CT contrast agents on the uptake of 99mTc-mebrofenin in the liver. Materials and Methods: The quantitative HBS was performed on sixty-two liver transplantation patients (male:female=36:26), with a mean age of 59.4±6.4 years. Statistical comparison of hepatic uptake reduction ratio (HURR%) before and after the injection of CT contrast agents was performed using a paired t-test. Results: Hepatic uptake of the reduction ratio was 94.47±3.65% for the pre-CT contrast agents and 92.17±4.00% for the post-CT contrast agents. HURR% after CT contrast agent injection showed a statistically significant difference compared to before the injection (t=11.09, P<0.001). Conclusion: It will be necessary to pay attention when examining the HBS of patients with liver transplantation after the injection of CT contrast medium. It is advisable to schedule the examination on a different day to prevent residual contrast medium in the body from interfering with the quantitative evaluation of the nuclear medicine examination.
The paper gives a brief introduction to protonic defects and their chemistry, thermodynamics and transport in oxides. The temperature dependence of the equilibrium concentration of protons is illustrated and compared for different acceptor-doped oxides. The difficulties of saturating as well as emptying the oxides of protons are discussed. In order to illustrate the possibility of lattice relaxation of defects, a conceptual study is made of a case where the enthalpy of dissolution of protons(water) at the cost of oxygen vacancies is assumed dependent on the concentration of vacancies. It is shown how this changes the behavior of hydration curves vs temperature and water vapour pressure. finally, a discussion is given on the water uptake in heavily oxygen deficient oxides; how water uptake may affect order-disorder in the oxygen sublattice and eventually lead to defective, disordered or ordered oxyhydroxides or hydroxides of potential interest as intermediate temperature proton conductions.
Soil properties which affect the retention of Pb(I) were investigated in the laboratory. It was determined, through selective removal, that organic matter and Fe-oxides are of lesser importance in influencing Pb retention than are soil clay minerals. The following trend : clays > organic matter > Fe-oxides represents the relative importance of each constituent in the adsorption of Pb by soils. The consistently greater Pb uptake by surface over subsurface samples was apparently due to differences in organic matter content, inasmuch as organic matter removal from both resulted in similar adsorption characteristics. All five soils stooled exhibited a pH-dependent trend of adsorption. The extent of Pb adsorption was least at low pH values(4~5), was maximum in the neutral pH range, and leveled off or diminished under more alkaline conditions. There was no strong correlation between Pb uptake and soil cation exchange capacity as routinely measured by the NH$_4$OAc method. A knowledge of clay mineralogy in conjunction with soil pH is suggested as being the most reliable guide to predicting Pb retention by soils.
Worm cast is one of the effective and the least harmful organic fertilizer. The purpost of this work is to elucidate the physiological role of worm cast in the plant growth. Worm cast extract contains 17.83ppm of zinc, but either cadmium or lead were not detected in it. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. H. N. Semiwhite) was germinated and incubated with percentage-varied extract. While 10% extract stimulated sprouting of seeds, 100% extract had no effct on it. 50% extract and 100% extract enhanced hypercotyl elongation and fresh weight most effectively. Dry matter and zinc concentration in hypercotyl were increased as percentage of extract increased. Protein con-tent was not affected by extract, 100% extract inhibits water uptake of seedling. Considering these, enhancement of seedling growth was mainly based on increment of water uptake.

A study on the removal of heavy metals using sawdust was performed. Among heavy metals such as lead, copper and cadmium ions, uptake capacity of lead ions was the highest as about 0.22 mmol/g-dry mass at pH 4. The surface condition and existence of lead ions onto the sawdust was confirmed by the FT-IR, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) instrumental analyses. When 0.5g of sawdust was added to initial lead solution (100ppm) removal efficiency was approximately 90%. Isothermal adsorption curve for lead ions was described by the Langmuir model equation and experimental data well fitted to model equation. Most adsorption for lead ions was also completed within 60min and pH of lead solution from 5.8 to 4.5 decreased with time.
A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effects of water management and application of slaked lime and wollastonite on Pb uptake of rice in a Pb added soil. The soil was adjusted to 0, 150, 300 and 600 ppm of Pb concentration. The slake lime was applied at the equivalent amount of lime requirement with 150kg/10a adding and the wollastonite, 200kg/10a, respectively. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The lead contents in leaf stem and brown rice increased with increasing the soil Pb content and the ratio of Pb/(Ca+Mg) equivalent in soil but they showed no influence on yields. 2. The application of lime and wollastonite reduced Pb content in plant. 3. The lead content in plant was higher in intermittently irrigated treatment than in submersed irrigation. 4. The soil pH was increased in the order of lime, wollastonite and control. 5. $1N-NH_4$ OAC soluble Pb content in soil was higher in the submersed irrigation than in the intermittently irrigated and was higher in wollastonite application treatment than the slaked lime after harvesting.
In order to exploit Methylobacterium oryzae CBMB20 as of plant growth promoting agent, different inoculation methods have been evaluated. The present study aimed to evaluate soil, foliar, and soil+foliar inoculations of M. oryzae CBMB20 to improve the growth, fruit yield, and nutrient uptake of red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) under greenhouse conditions. The population range of green fluorescent protein (gfp)-tagged M. oryzae CBMB20 using the three inoculation methods was 2.5-2.9 ${\log}_{10}$ cfu/g in the rhizosphere and 4.5-6.0 ${\log}_{10}$ cfu/g in the phyllosphere of red pepper plants. Confocal laser scanning microscopy results confirmed the colonization of M. oryzae CBMB20 endophytically on leaf surface. Plant height, fruit dry weight, and total biomass were significantly higher ($p{\leq}0.05$) in all M. oryzae CBMB20 inoculation methods as compared to non-inoculated control. Furthermore, uptake of mineral nutrients such as N, P, K, Ca, and Mg in red pepper plants in all M. oryzae CBMB20 inoculation methods was higher than in non-inoculated control. Comparative results of inoculation methods clearly demonstrated that soil+foliar inoculation of M. oryzae CBMB20 lead to the highest biomass accumulation and nutrient uptake which may be due to its efficient colonization in the red pepper rhizosphere and phyllosphere.
