Nanocomposite SiEA-KNiFe sorbent - Complete solution from synthesis through radiocesium sorption to vitrification using the sol-gel method

  • This study presents a novel complete solution starting with a synthesis of silica modified with potassium-nickel hexacyanoferrate and ethanolamine (SiEA-KNiFe) sorbent through radiocesium sorption in different process configurations and moving on to the vitrification of the spent sorbent, using the sol-gel method. The experimental data for deionized water solution, as well as seawater solution, correlates strongly with the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the study also presents a method for spent sorbent solidification in the glass matrix. The cesium leaching test confirmed that spent sorbent can be stably bound in the glass matrix after radionuclide removal.

Study on the Recovery Silver and Nanoparticles Synthesis from LTCC By-products of Lowly Concentrated Silver (저농도 은이 함유된 LTCC 전극공정부산물로부터 은 회수 및 나노입자 제조 연구)

  • In this paper, the recovery and nanoparticle synthesis of Ag from low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) by-products are studied. The effect of reaction behavior on Ag leaching conditions from the LTCC by-products is confirmed. The optimum leaching conditions are determined to be: 5 M $HNO_3$, a reaction temperature of $75^{\circ}C$, and a pulp density of 50 g/L at 60 min. For the selective recovery of Ag, the [Cl]/[Ag] equivalence ratio experiment is performed using added HCl; most of the Ag (more than 99%) is recovered. The XRD and MP-AES results confirm that the powder is AgCl and that impurities are at less than 1%. Ag nanoparticles are synthesized using a chemical reduction process for recycling, $NaBH_4$ and PVP are used as reducing agents and dispersion stabilizers. UV-vis and FE-SEM results show that AgCl powder is precipitated and that Ag nanoparticles are synthesized. Ag nanoparticles of 100% Ag are obtained under the chemical reaction conditions.

  • Soluble silica generated from acid leaching process is very difficult to filter and deceases the purity of products, and thus becomes one of hot issues in hydrometallurgy. This paper reviewed the dissolution and reactivities of silicates in acid solution, and the methods for treatment of soluble silica. Removal of silica with alkaline pre-treatment, crystallization to $SiO_2$ and precipitation behaviour of silica with coagulation under acid conditions were briefly described.

Recovery of Nickel and Cobalt by a Hydrometallurgical Process from Nickel Laterite Ore with High Magnesium Content (마그네슘함량이 높은 니켈 laterite광으로부터 습식공정에 의한 니켈과 코발트 회수)

  • Leaching and solvent extraction experiments have been performed to develop a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from nickel laterite ore with high magnesium content. Most of the nickel and magnesium in the laterite ore dissolved at leaching conditions of $80^{\circ}C$ and 100 g/L sulfuric acid concentration. while half of the cobalt and iron were leached at the same conditions. Solvent extraction experiments were carried out with D2EHPA and saponifed D2EHPA from a synthetic solution containing Ni, Co, and Mg. The extraction percentage of Co, Mg. and Ni by D2EHPA was very low in a pH range of 4.4 to 7.3. while the extraction percentage sharply increased by using saponified D2EHPA. The stripping percentage of the metals from the saponified D2EHPA increased with sulfuric acid concentration and reached 99.9% at 1 M $H_2SO_4$ solution.

  • This work investigated the influence of concentration and applied potential on the characteristics of zinc powder (purity, apparent density, morphology, particle size distribution, and particle zeta potential) produced by the electrochemical process from waste brass. High-purity zinc powder is obtained using selective leaching of industrial brass waste in acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions. The free immersion method with and without voltage using linear polarization technique is used. In the electrochemical process, hydrochloric acid HCl in three different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) M is used. The time and the distance between the electrodes are set to be 30 min and 3 cm, respectively. It has been found that the percentage purity is 98%, 96%, and 94% for the acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions, respectively. In addition, the morphology of zinc powder analyzed by SEM was dendritic and mossy. It has been recorded that the purity of zinc increases with the increase of the concentration and applied potential. The highest value of purity for zinc powder was %98.58 in 1000 mV and 0.3M concentration for graphite cathode.

Separation of Neodymium from NdEeB Permanent Magnetic Scrap (NdFeB계 영구자석 스크랩으로부터 네오디뮴의 분리회수)

  • In this study, the separation of neodymium was investigated from NdFeB permanent magnet scrap. Decomposition and leach-ing process of NdFeB permanent magnet scrap by oxidation roasting and sulfuric arid leaching were examined. Neodymium could be separated from iron by double salt precipitation using sodium sulfate. The optimum conditions established for decom-position and leaching are as follows: oxidation roasting temperature is $500^{\circ}C$ for sintered scrap and $700^{\circ}C$ for bonded scrap, concentration of sulfuric acid in leaching solution is 2.0 M, leaching temperature and time is $50^{\circ}C$ and 2 hrs, and pulp density is 15%. The leaching yield of neodymium and iron was 99.4% and 95.7% respectively. The optimum condition for separation of neodymium by double-salt precipitation was 2 equivalents of sodium sulfate and $50^{\circ}C$ The yield of neodymium was above 99.9%.

  • This study were carried out sulfation roasting and selective leaching test for the effective recovery of copper component in concentrate obtained by froth floatation of Autrallian low grade copper ore. The optimum conditions of sulfation roasting were temp. $450^{\circ}C$, $Na_2SO_4$ 2 mole ratio and time 1.5 h, and then selective leaching were room temperature and $H_2O$ or 1M $H_2SO_4$ solutions. Leaching efficiency of optimum sulfation product were 90 wt.% of copper, 20 wt.% of iron and 15wt.% of nickel elements. In this results, it was possible to selective decomposition leaching of the copper component under optimum conditions in this research.

  • Arsenic is one of the most abundant contaminant found in waste mine tailings and soil around refinery, Because of its carcinogenic property, the countries like United States of America and Europe have made stringent regulations which govern the concentration of arsenic in soil. The study focuses on solidification/stabilization for removal of arsenic from soil. Cement was used to solidify/stabilize the abandoned soil primarily contaminated with arsenic (up to 68.92 mg/kg) in and around refinery. Solidified/stabilized (s/s) forms in the range of cement contents 5-30 wt % were evaluated to determine the optimal binder content. Revised Korean standard leaching tests (KSLT), toxicity characteristic leaching procedures (TCLP), Old Korea standard leaching test and revised Korea standard leaching test were used for chemical characterization of the S/S forms. The addition of 10 % cement remarkably reduced the leachability of arsenic in contaminated soil. The concentration of As in leachate of TCLP, KSLT, and old KSLT for soil are below the standard. However that in leachate of revised KSLT is above the standard. Because of extraction fluid used in revised KSLT is very strong acid. It is arsenic in s/s with binder should be exhaustingly leached. Therefore S/S process would not be available for As treatment in soil in Korea.

Dilute Acid Pretreatment of Woody Hemicellulose Using a Percolation Process (Percolation 공정에 의한 목질계 헤미셀룰로오스의 묽은산 전처리)

  • The dilute-acid pretreatment/hydrolysis of hemicellulose in oak wood using a percolation reactor was investigated. The experimental conditions ranged 160∼180$^{\circ}C$ and 0.05∼0.2 wt.% sulfuric acid. XMG(xylan+mannan+galactan) recovery was higher when sulfuric acid was used as leaching solvent than water. Also it was important for high XMG recovery to keep leaching temperature higher after reaction. XMG recovery was decreased as the size of wood chips was increased. At an optimum condition (reaction condition= 170$^{\circ}C$, 0.1% sulfuric acid, 1ml/min, 10min, leaching condition=0.1% sulfuric acid, 2mL/min, 20 min), the product yield and the sugar concentration were about 92% and 2.7%, respectively.

  • An experimental research was preformed for the development of an effective process for zinc oxide waste(zinc ash) reuse. Zinc was selectively leached from zinc ash by 30 vol.% D2EHPA In kerosine solution, and the leaching velocity was quite fast. Zinc leached was stripped by sulfuric acid solutions, and the amount of zinc stripped was linearly Increased with the amount of sulfuric acid used. Zinc oxide fine particles were obtained by dropwise adding of sodium hydroxide solution to the resultant aqueous zinc solution at 85$^{\circ}C$.
