  • This paper describes three-dimensional (3-D) standard curves for single prismatic buried bodies in induced polarization (IP) method. Dipole-dipole IP responses for the bodies are calculated by the numerical modeling technique using an integral equation solution. The pattern of IP responses for conductive targets depends on the ratio of the width of body to the depth extent. The IP response of a body of six units in strike length approximates that of a two-dimensional body. In addition, if the strike length is long enough, a layered-earth interpretation is applicable for a body much longer than four units in width. Moving an IP line away from the center of a body alon gstrike produces an effect similar to that of increasing the depth. Moving the location of body along line has little effect to the pattern of IP responses.

  • As the computing landscape is shifting to ubiquitous computing environments, there is increasingly growing the demand for a variety of device controls that react to user's implicit activities without excessively drawing user attentions. We developed an EMG-based car interface that enables the physically handicapped to drive a car using their functioning peripheral nerves. Our method extracts electromyogram signals caused by wrist movements from four places in the user's forearm and then infers the user's intent from the signals using multi-layered neural nets. By doing so, it makes it possible for the user to control the operation of car equipments and thus to drive the car. It also allows the user to enter inputs into the embedded computer through a user interface like an instrument LCD panel. We validated the effectiveness of our method through experimental use in a car built with the EMG-based interface.

  • The dynamic behavior of multi-layered stone masonry monuments, such as stone pagoda, are mainly influenced by contour condition of contacting surface of stones. These structures can be modeled as a multi-degrees of freedom system. In this case the mass of the system can be easily estimated, mean while the estimation of stiffness at junction is not simple. In this paper a method for estimating the spring constant at the contacting surface of stone is proposed. The proposed method utilizes the natural frequency of the system which can be obtained by eigenvalue analysis.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement and to gain a required shear strength for a given soft clay deposit, the preloading technique combined with a vertical drainage system has been widely applied. In this'study, the theory of axisymmetric consolidation which considers the variation of compressibility and permeability during the conslidation process, has ben developed. A computer program named AXICON for the analysis of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation is developed by adopting an explicit finite difference method. Smear and well resistance effects are also considered. The AXICON is capable of analyzing the consolidation behavior of multi -layered deposits and simulates time dependent loading sequence. The results of AXICON are validated with analytical solutions of Hansbo and Barron, and compared with insitu settlements and pore pressures measured in a soft clay deposit.

  • A new approach to developing battery SOC indicator for electric vehicle is discussed in this paper. One of the most difficult problems associated with the development of electric vehicle is the battery indicator which reliably informs the state of charge(SOC) of the battery to the driver. And the condition to be satisfied with SOC indicator installed on the electric vehicle is that it should be used under frequently variable load. A new method to determining SOC using neural networks(NN) is proposed to satify the condition. The training data of NN are obtained by using mathematical model of lead-acid battery, and calculating discharge currents and terminal voltages while battery discharges with constant current. The 3-layered NN with back propagation algorithm is used Simulation results show that the proposed method is appropriate as SOC indicator of the battery.

  • Under frame side sill of rolling stock structure is designed for preventing corrosion in order to meet mechanical requirements. However during long operation time more than 20 years, there are corrosion in the under frame side sill caused by environmental effect, vibration and etc. So, detection and evaluation of the corrosion ill the under frame nondestructive is one of important issues to extend their life time. Most of nondestructive methods are not easy to apply for detecting corrosion in the under frame side sill, since the under frame side sill consist of there layered with different material (stainless steel - stainless steel - mild steel) and each layer is connected by spot weld and plug weld. Fortunately, pulsed eddy current method claimed that it can be measured not only thickness change but also corrosion under their insulation layers. So, in this study, we have investigated performance of pulsed eddy current testing method by measuring thickness variation of fabricate of mock-up specimens. The investigation results obtained from mock-up specimens and the corrosion evaluation results of the aged rolling stocks will be presented.

  • The binary chalcogenide semiconductor Bi2Se3 is at the center of intensive research on a new state of matter known as topological insulators. It has Dirac point in their band structures with robust surface states that are protected against external perturbations by strong spin-orbit coupling with broken inversion symmetry. Such unique band configurations were confirmed by recent angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy experiments with an unwanted n-type doping effect, showing a Fermi level shift of about 0.3 eV caused by atomic defects such as Se vacancies. Since the number of defects can be reduced using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. We have prepared the Bi2Se3 film on noble metal Au(111) and semiconductor Si(111) substrates by MBE method. To characterize the film, we have introduced several surface sensitive techniques including x-ray photoemission electron spectroscopy (XPS) and micro Raman spectroscopy. Also, crystallinity of the film has been confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Using home-built scanning tunneling microscope, we observed the atomic structure of quintuple layered Bi2Se3 film on Au(111).

  • Circular Bragg gratings(CBGs) canbe incorporated in most of the semiconductor laser devices because of the frequency-selective property applicable as an optical narrowband-pass filter in DWDM optical communications. In this paper, the optical filtering characteristics of CBGs are evaluated by a novel and simple analytic modal transmission-line theory(MTLT), which is based on Floquet-Babinet's principle. The numerical results reveal that this method offers a simple and convenient algorithm to analyze the filtering characteristics of CBGs as well as is extended conveniently to evaluate the guiding problems of circular multi-layered periodic structures.

  • Structural integrity assessment technique for pavement system is studied considering the uncertainties among the material properties. The artificial neural networks technique is applied for the inverse analysis to estimate the elastic modulus based on the measured deflections from the FWD test. A computer code based on the spectral element method was developed for the accurate and fast analysis of the multi-layered soil structures, and the developed program was used for generating the training and testing patterns for the neural network. Neural networks was applied to estimate the elastic modulus of pavement system using the maximum deflections with and without the uncertainties in the material properties. It was found that the estimation results by the conventiona1 neural networks were very poor when there exist the uncertainties and the estimation results could be significantly improved by adopting the proposed method for generating training patterns considering the uncertainties among material properties.

  • The object oriented co-modeling methodology, previously introduced, employs a layered approach in war game models development in which an upper layer models abstract behavior of an object and a lower one models details of the object. Within the methodology military domain experts and simulation experts models an object at the upper and the lower layers, respectively in concurrent manner. This paper proposes a method of constructing a war game simulator using parametric behavior modeling technique, which provides a means for military domain experts/users to change model's detailed behavior with no knowledge on modeling semantics. The proposed simulator would support new algorithms or strategies with minimal cost and could be modified even by the users who are ignorant about modeling technique. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, a naval war game simulator is exemplified.
