  • This paper studies the free vibration behavior of trapezoidal shaped coupled double-layered graphene sheets (DLGS) system using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and incorporating nonlocal elasticity theory. Two nanoplates are assumed to be bonded by an interlayer van der walls force and surrounded by an external kelvin-voight viscoelastic medium. The governing equations together with related boundary condition are discretized using a mapping-differential quadrature method (DQM) in the spatial domain. Then the natural frequency of the system is obtained by solving the eigen value matrix equation. The validity of the current study is evaluated by comparing its numerical results with those available in the literature and then a parametric study is thoroughly performed, concentrating on the series effects of angles and aspect ratio of GS, viscoelastic medium, and nonlocal parameter. The model is used to study the vibration of DLGS for two typical deformation modes, the in-phase and out-of-phase vibrations, which are investigated. Numerical results indicate that due to Increasing the damping parameter of the viscoelastic medium has reduced the frequency of both modes and this medium has been able to overdamped the oscillations and by increasing stiffness parameters both in-phase and out-of-phase vibration frequencies increased.

  • This article investigates the free vibration behavior of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams embedded using variational analytical methods and artificial neural networks (ANN). The material properties of layered functionally graded CNTRC (FG-CNTRC) beams are estimated using nonlocal parameters modified power-law with different types of CNT distributions through the thickness direction of the beam. Adopting Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory to capture the small size effects, the nonlocal governing equations are derived and solved using the analytical method. And also, the problem was analyzed using the ANN method. The architecture of the proposed ANN model is 3-9-1. In the experiments, we used 112 different data to predict the natural frequency using ANN. Based on the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, the equations of motion as well as the boundary conditions of the beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. The classical beam theory is used to formulate a governing equation for predicting the free vibration of laminated CNTRC beams. According to the experimental results, the prediction ability of the ANN model is very good and the natural frequency can be predicted in ANN without attempting any experiments.

  • The Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) is one of the recently developed metaheuristic optimization algorithms. Since the development of HSA, it has been applied by many researchers from various fields. The increasing complexity of problems has created enormous challenges for the current technique, and improved techniques of optimization algorithms are required. In this study, to improve the HSA in terms of a structural setting, a new HSA that has structural characteristics, called the Multi-layered Harmony Search Algorithm (MLHSA) was proposed. In this new method, the structural characteristics were added to HSA to improve the exploration and exploitation capability. In addition, the MLHSA was applied to optimization problems, including unconstrained benchmark functions and water distribution system pipe diameter design problems to verify the efficiency and applicability of the proposed algorithm. The results revealed the strength of MLHSA and its competitiveness.

  • Anti-reflective and anti-static double layered films were prepared on the VDT panel by sol-gel spin-coating method. Their electrical, opticla, and mechanical properties were investigated. The outer SiO2 film with low re-fractive index was coated over the inner ATO(Antimony-doped Tin Oxide)-SiO2 film which was prepared by mixing ATO sol with SiO2 at molar ratio of 68:32 to satisfy the interference condition of double layers. The heat treatment was conducted at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min where residual organics were completely removed. The sheet resistance of ATO single layer showed the minimum value of 6$\times$107$\Omega$/$\square$ at 3 mol% addition of Sb and that of SiO2/ATO-SiO2 increased slightly with increasing SiO2 mol% up to 30 mol%, and then increased steeply to the value of 3$\times$108$\Omega$/$\square$ at 32 mol%. The reflectance of double layered films was about 0.64% at the wavelength of 550nm and the transmittance increased about 3.20%. The hardness of double layered films was almost the same as that of uncoated VDT panel, 471.4kg.f/mm2.

  • An analytical method based on the nonlinear layered finite element method is developed to simulate overall load-deflection behavior of bonded and unbonded prestressed concrete beams. The model which uses rather advanced numerical technique for iterative convergence to equilibrium can be regarded as superior one compared to the models mainly based on either load control or displacement control methods. Model predictions were compared with preceding experimental results and it was observed that there were good agreements between them.

  • An analytical solution method capable of determining the geometric configuration and developed tensile forces of mooring lines associated with fixed plate/pile or drag anchors is presented. The solution method, satisfying complete equilibrium conditions, is capable of analyzing multi-segmented mooring lines that can consist of either chains, cables, or wires embedded in layered seafloor soils. Centrifuge model tests and full -scale field tests were used to calibrate and validate the analytical solution.

  • Wave propagation in inhomogeneous elastic media is studied by using the Fourier method, where the spatial derivatives are computed by the FFT algorithm, while the time derivatives are expanded into the second order finite different expansion. For numerical examples, wave propagation in the layered half-plane are investigated. The comparisons of numerical and analytic results shows good agreement.

  • The method of characteristic matrix used in the calculation of multi-layered optical coating is applied to the analysis of DFB waveguide with arbitrary structure of grating by plecewise approximation where the DFB structure is devided into many sections in which the gain and period, amplitude and phase of DFB structure are assuced to be constant in each section. The DFB structure with two section is analyzed using this method of C-matrix. The possible applications for photonic devices using DFB waveguides are proposed.

  • An analytical method is developed which focused on the end effects for determining the thermal stress distribution in an laminated beam bonded with adhesive layer. This method gives the stress distribution which satisfy the stress-free boundary condition at edge completely. Numerical example, in which an Al-Cu beam bonded with solder(Pb-Sn) is treated, shows that the shear and peeling stresses at the interfaces are significant near the edge and become negligible in the interior region.
