  • Ship Information Systems (SISs) have been one of the main research focuses in ship design and become a multidisciplinary area. With these growing research trends, it is important to consolidate the latest knowledge and information to keep up with the research needs. In this paper, the SIS and its different forms are introduced and discussed. The beginning of this paper discusses the history and evolution of SIS. The next part of this paper focuses on different fields and research areas such as networking technology, information fusion, information decision, message display, ship control in real-time SISs. A Semi-Physical Simulation Platform (SPSIM) designed for SIS research and its running effect through a new Fuzzy-PID fusion algorithm are introduced in this paper then. A brief literature survey and possible future direction concerning each topic is included.

  • U-learning stresses the ubiquitous networking environment where different sizes of U-devices, let alone the dominant PCs, comprise a background infrastructure to enhance knowledge and performance. This paper suggests a U-learning system that will provide an alternative for the hectic private lessons, particularly English training among grade-school students. Several points are suggested of the U-system to be a cost-effective alternative. Besides the corresponding advancement of U-networking, the production of a profitable business model harnessing the emerging technology is most urgent. The Government authorities should recognize the potential U-social system solutions, and take an initiative to develop them. The latest technology seems to throw a light to the upcoming social systems applied in various fields of social needs.

  • Permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motors are the latest choice of researchers due to their high efficiency, silent operation, compact size, high reliability and low maintenance requirements. These motors are preferred for numerous applications; however, most of them require sensorless control of these motors. The operation of PMBLDC motors requires rotor-position sensing for controlling the winding currents. The sensorless control would need estimation of rotor position from the voltage and current signals, which are easily sensed. This paper presents state of the art PMBLDC motor drives with an emphasis on sensorless control of these motors.

  • For the service and creation of new space, the next generation smart device for interactive space using tailor-made contents process serve as an opportunity for the growth of new special display due to the integration of the latest digital technology. The application of next generation technology is in the field that most people expect. So, this thesis serving as the beginning, it is hoped that the smart mirror and wall industry in Korea will play a practical and academic momentum. An interactive environment which is the smart device can be realized when space displays based on smart device built on the experience of the user can provide various tailor-made processes such as academics, performances, meetings, virtual experience, exhibits and promotion, and through this a strategic direction was suggested for the development of each field.

  • Femtosecond laser is the latest generation pulsed laser delivering shortest pulses. Any solid materials can be machined by it. Femtosecond laser micromachining allows highest precision and minimal heat influence within the workpiece. But due to the complex physical phenomena between the laser beam and the workpiece materials, it is very difficult to determine the optimal process conditions in the femtosecond laser micromachining. In this study, a method to simulate the femtosecond laser micromachining process was proposed. And femtosecond laser micro patterning processes of chromium thin film are simulated by the proposed method using a commercial FE code, LS-Dyna. Simulation results were compared with those of experiments.

  • This review provides a summary of data assimilation applied to the seas around Korea. Currently the worldwide efforts are devoted to applying advanced assimilation to realistic cases, thanks to improvements in mathematical foundations of assimilation methods and the computing capabilities, and also to the availability of extensive observational data such as from satellites. Over the seas around Korea, however, the latest developments in the advanced assimilation methods have yet to be applied. Thus it would be timely to review the progress in data assimilation over the seas. Firstly, the definition and necessity of data assimilation are described, continued by a brief summary of major assimilation methods. Then a review of past research on the ocean data assimilation in the regional seas around Korea is given and future trends are considered. Special consideration is given to the assimilation of remotely-sensed data.

  • Over the past 30 years, significant developments have been made in hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technologies that can provide end users with rich spectral, spatial, and temporal information. Owing to the advances in miniaturization, cost reduction, real-time processing, and analytical methods, HSI technologies have a wide range of applications from remote-sensing to healthcare, military, and the environment. In this study, we focus on the latest trends of HSI technologies, analytical methods, and their applications. In particular, improved machine learning techniques, such as deep learning, allows the full use of HSI technologies in classification, clustering, and spectral mixture algorithms. Finally, we describe the status of HSI technology development for skin diagnostics.

  • Smart pole is one of mega trend in smart city development. It has multi-function to get as much as data from the street to better city management. And smart street lighting of smart pole as core part of smart city development is being implemented by many cities in globally. Refer to the latest edition of Navigant Research's Smart City Tracker includes smart city projects in 221 cities, a quarter of which are deploying smart street lighting ranging from initial pilots to citywide and regional deployments that span tens and even hundreds of thousands of lights. The most important feature of smart street lighting solution is "Connectivity" through the IoT technology. In order to implement the smart city, we should have so-called intelligent watchdog and mesh networked post for keeping the various smart city technology development progress and operation properly. Smart street lighting solution could be main infrastructure as an enabler for a range of smart city applications. We can talk about the expected role of smart street lighting for the smart city development on this paper.
