This paper investigates the influence of spatial varations of accidental mass eccentricities on the torsional response of inelastic multistorey reinforced concrete buildings. It complements recent studies on the elastic response of structural buildings and extends the investigation into the inelastic range, with the aim of providing guidelines for minimising the torsional response of structural buildings. Four spatial mass eccentricity configurations of common nine story buildings, along with their reversed mass eccentricities subjected to the Erzincan-1992 and Kobe-1995 ground motions were investigated, and the results are discussed in the context of the structural response of the no eccentricity models. It is demonstrated that when the initial linear response is practically translational, it is maintained into the inelastic phase of deformation as long as the strength assignment of the lateral resisting bents is based on a planar static analysis where the applied lateral loads simulate the first mode of vibration of the uncoupled structure.

In this paper, we studied about the effects of the rotating cantilever pipe conveying fluid with a moving mass. The influences of a rotating angular velocity, the velocity of fluid flow and moving mass on the dynamic behavior of a cantilever pipe have been studied by the numerical method. The equation of motion is derived by using the Lagrange's equation. The cantilever pipe is modeled by the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. When the velocity of a moving mass is constant, the lateral tip-displacement of a cantilever pipe is proportional to the moving mass and the angular velocity. In the steady state, the lateral tip-displacement of a cantilever pipe is more sensitive to the velocity of fluid than the angular velocity, and the axial deflection of a cantilever pipe is more sensitive to the effect of a angular velocity. Totally, as the moving mass is increased, the frequency of a cantilever pipe is decreased in steady state.

This study performed model tunnel tests in order to investigate the influence of discontinuity condition of rock mass to the stress and deformation of tunnel lining. Tests were carried out changing the direction of main joint and lateral earth pressure condition of rock mass. Test results revealed that the axial force in tunnel lining showed a tendency of decrease with the presence of joints. It decreased much with the increase of lateral earth pressure coefficient. And, it also showed that the location or maximum displacement and maximum stress in lining were changed by the direction of main joint of rock mass. The tangential stress and normal stress showed the difference above the maximum twenty times as lateral earth pressure coefficient due to effect of joints increased. Also, these tendencies of concentration of tensile stress in tunnel lining were confirmed by elastic theory.
Calcified right ventricular thrombi are very rare. One case of large clacified thrombus in right ventricle being seen in a 65-year old man, is presented. He had dyspnea and generalized edema. The chest film showed a large calcified mass in cardiac shadow especially in lateral view.On echocardiography and chest computed tomography, large calcified mass density occupied nearly entire right ventricular outflow tract. The mass removal was performed through right ventriculotomny. The mass was whitish, stony hard, measured 4 cm x 4.5 cm x 8 cm, tightly attached to right ventricular infundibular septum and ventriculoinfundibular fold.

Object : The clinical uses of screws are increasing with broader applications in spinal disorders. When screws are inserted repeatedly to achieve optimal position, tips of screw pitch may become damaged during insertion even though there are significant differences in the moduli of elasticity between bone and titanium. The effect of repeated screw insertion on pullout resistance was investigated. Methods : Three different titanium screws(cortical lateral mass screw, cancellous lateral mass screw and cervical vertebral body screw) were inserted into the synthetic cancellous material and then extracted axially at a rate of 2.4mm/min using Instron(Model TT-D, Canton, MA). Each set of screws was inserted and pulled out three times. There were six screws in each group. The insertional torque was measured with a torque wrench during insertion. Pullout strength was recorded with a digital oscilloscope. Results : The mean pullout force measurements for the cortical lateral mass screws($185.66N{\pm}42.60$, $167.10N{\pm}27.01$ and $162.52 N{\pm}23.83$ for first, second and third pullout respectively : p=0.03) and the cervical vertebral body screws($386.0N{\pm}24.1$, $360.2N{\pm}17.5$ and $330.9N{\pm}16.7$ : p=0.0024) showed consecutive decrease in pullout resistance after each pullout, whereas the cancellous lateral mass screws did not($194.00N{\pm}36.47$, $219.24N{\pm}26.58$ and 199.49N(36.63 : p=0.24). The SEM after insertion and pullout three times showed a blunting in the tip of the screw pitch and a smearing of the screw surface. Conclusions : Repetitive screw insertion and pullout resulted in the decrease of pullout resistance in certain screws possibly caused by blunting the screw tip. This means screw tips suffer deformations during either repeated insertion or pullout. Thus, the screws that have been inserted should not be used for the final construct.
The vibration of a running vehicle can be classified on lateral, longitudinal and vertical motions. The important factor on the stability and ride quality of a railway vehicle is the lateral motion. The contact between wheel and rail with conicity influences strongly on the lateral motion. In this study, an experiment for the vibration of a running railway vehicle was performed using a small scale railway vehicle model. Also, the effects on the car body, bogie and wheelset were examined for the weight and the stiffness of the first and second suspension. The experimental results showed that the lateral vibration increases as the wheel conicity and stiffness of the second suspension increase. And the lateral vibration of the bogie increases as the mass ratio between car body and bogie increases. Also, the lateral vibration of the wheel becomes high at low speed, while the wheel of 1/20 conicity makes severe vibration at high speed running.
Some conventional lateral load patterns for pushover analysis, and proposing a new accurate pattern was investigated in present research. The new proposed load pattern has load distribution according weight and stiffness variation in height and mode shape of structure. The assessment of pushover application with mentioned pattern in X type braced steel frames and steel moment resisting frames, with stiffness and mass variation in height, was studied completely and the obtained results were compared with nonlinear dynamic analysis method (including time history analysis). The methods were compared from standpoints of some basic parameters such as displacement, drift and shape of lateral load pattern. It is concluded that proposed load pattern results are closer to nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA) compared to other pushover load patterns especially in tall and medium-rise buildings having different stiffness and mass during the height.

Posterior neck pain is a common complaint of patients in the pain clinic. The atlas (C1) burst fracture is known to be a cause of posterior neck pain and instability. Although the atlas burst fracture and instability can be discovered by plain X-rays which show lateral mass displacement or widening of the atlantodental interval, assessment of an atlas burst fracture can be difficult if there is no instability in the imaging study. Here we report a case of a 46-year-old female patient who had complained of sustained posterior neck pain for 6 months. Plain X-rays showed only disc space narrowing at C4/5 and C5/6, without any cervical instability. However, an unrecognized C1 lateral mass fracture was detected by CT and MRI. The patient's pain was then successfully treated after atlantoaxial joint injection with a C2 DRG block.
In deep mining, the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar appears to be a new characteristic. In order to study the lateral deformation of coal-mass, a monitoring method and monitoring instrument were designed to investigate the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar in Tangkou Coalmine with the mining depth of over 1000 m. Because of without influence of repeated mining, the bedding sandstone roof is easy to break and the angle between maximum horizontal stress and the roadway is small, the maximum lateral deformation is only about 287 mm lower than the other pillars in the same coalmine. In deep mining, the energy accumulation and release cause a discontinuous damage in the heterogeneous coal-mass, and the lateral deformation of coal pillar shows discontinuity, step and mutation characters. These coal-masses not only show a higher plasticity but also the high brittleness at the same time, and its burst tendency is more obvious. According to the monitoring results and theoretical calculations, the yield zone of the coal pillar width is determined as 15.6 m. The monitoring results presented through this study are of great significance to the stability analysis and design of coal pillar.
Meralgia paresthetica is a disorder characterized by a pain or dysaesthesia, or both, in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh caused by entrapment or neurinoma formation of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Currently available modes of therapy include conservative treatment, lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block with steroids and local anesthetics, and surgery. At our neuro-pain clinic, w recently encountered three cases of meralgia paresthetica, all of which were treated by lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block. In which of them, two cases were successfully treated but one case was associate with pain relapse due to entrapment of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve by a retroperitoneal mass, schwannoma. In this paper we report our experience along with a review of the current literatures.
