Forced Vibration Testing of Full-scale Non-seismic Reinforced Concrete Frame Structure Retrofitted Using FRP Jacketing System (FRP자켓 시스템이 보강된 비내진 철근콘크리트 골조의 실물 크기 강제 진동 실험)

  • Existing reinforced concrete building structures have seismic vulnerabilities due to their seismically-deficient details resulting in non-ductile behavior. The seismic vulnerabilities can be mitigated by retrofitting the buildings using a fiber-reinforced polymer column jacketing system, which can provide additional confining pressures to existing columns to improve their lateral resisting capacities. This study presents dynamic responses of a full-scale non-ductile reinforced concrete frame retrofitted using a fiber-reinforced polymer column jacketing system. A series of forced-vibration testing was performed to measure the dynamic responses (e.g. natural frequencies, story drifts and column/beam rotations). Additionally, the dynamic responses of the retrofitted frame were compared to those of the non-retrofitted frame to investigate effectiveness of the retrofit system. The experimental results demonstrate that the retrofit system installed on the first story columns contributed to reducing story drifts and column rotations. Additionally, the retrofit scheme helped mitigate damage concentration on the first story columns as compared to the non-retrofitted frame.

  • Finite element method is applied to the determinations of the two eigenvalues(the elastic critical load and the natural frequence of lateral vibrations) of single story-3 equal bay rectangular frame. The analysis parameters are taper parameter ${\alpha}$ for column, and beam span to column height ratio, ${\beta}$ and second moment area ratio of beam to column, ${\Upsilon}$. Support condition at the column base and sway condition at the column top are also considered in the stability analysis of frame. The changes in the coefficient of eigenvalue are represented by algebraic function of analysis parameter. The coefficients estimated by the proposed algebraic function show good agreement with those determined by finite element method, which suggest the design aid role of the proposed function. By increasing the column axial forces step by step, the corresponding frequencies are also determined, which makes one examine or confirm the relationship suggested by other studies.

  • When catilever beams rotate about axes perpendicular to the underformed beam's longitudinal axis, their bending stiffnesses change due to the stretching caused by centrifugal inertia forces. Such phenomena result in variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes associated with constant speed rotational motions of the beams. These variations are important in many practical applications such as helicopter blades, turbomachines, and space structures. This paper presents the formulation of a set of linear equations governing the lateral motion of rotating cantilever beams. These equations can be used to provide accurate predictions of the variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes associated with constant speed rotational motions of the beams.   • This paper investigates the static and dynamic behaviors of imperfect single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) modeled as a beam structure by using energy-equivalent model (EEM), for the first time. Based on EEM Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio for zigzag (n, 0), and armchair (n, n) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented as functions of orientation and force constants. Nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli assumptions are proposed considering mid-plane stretching to exhibit a large deformation and a small strain. To simulate the interaction of CNTs with the surrounding elastic medium, nonlinear elastic foundation with cubic nonlinearity and shearing layer are employed. The equation governed the motion of curved CNTs is a nonlinear integropartial-differential equation. It is derived in terms of only the lateral displacement. The nonlinear integro-differential equation that governs the buckling of CNT is numerically solved using the differential integral quadrature method (DIQM) and Newton's method. The linear vibration problem around the static configurations is discretized using DIQM and then is solved as a linear eigenvalue problem. Numerical results are depicted to illustrate the influence of chirality angle and imperfection amplitude on static response, buckling load and dynamic behaviors of armchair and zigzag CNTs. Both, clamped-clamped (C-C) and simply supported (SS-SS) boundary conditions are examined. This model is helpful especially in mechanical design of NEMS manufactured from CNTs.

  • The loading condition, of a ship, especially a multi-purpose cargo carrier, in service, is often changed. Then, the prediction of natural frequency changes is necessary to provide measures for prevention of ship vibrations. In this paper a simplified method for the above purpose is presented. The bases of the method are analytical solutions for the lateral vibrations of uniform Timoshenko beams carrying a concentrated mass and the Dunkerley's formula. In this method a ship in the standard ballast condition is reduced to a uniform Timoshenko beam having same system parameters as those of the midship section. To investigate the validity of the proposed method, numerical calculations are carried out for a 46,000 DWT bulk carrier and compared with detailed calculations based on the finite difference method. Even in cases those the cargoes in a hold, length of which is about 13% of the ship's length, are reduced to a concentrated mass, the proposed method gives results of several percent differences from the detailed calculations up to the six-noded mode.

  • It is generally known that the lateral frequency( ω) of the vibration of a prismatic beam-column decreases according to the rele (equation omitted) (ω/sub 0/=natural frequency). In the cases of tapered members, the determination of P/ sub/ cr/(elastic critical load) and ω/ sub 0/ are not easy. Furthermore, the relationship between the compressive load and frequency can not be determined by the conventional analytical method. The axial force-frequency relationship of sinusolidally non-symmetrically tapered members with different shapes were investigated using the finite element method. To obtain the two eigenvalues, the axial thrust was increased step by step and the corresponding frequency was calculated. The result indicated that the axial thrust of the elastic critical load ratio and the square of the frequency ratio can be approximately represented in any case by a straight line. Finally, the linear relationship is also applicable to the sinusolidally non-symmetrically tapered member.

  • A new measurement method to measure vibrational motions of objects is presented. The original principle is similar to the previous work that utilized a 3-facet mirror to obtain three dimensional positions and orientations of rigid bodies. While the previous work was presented for only stationary objects, in this paper, we newly investigate the feasibility of this method for dynamic applications. The 3-facet mirror that looks like a triangular pyramid having an equilateral cross-sectional shape.   • The mathematical modeling on the free vibration and stability of a multi-stepped shaft of turbo compressor is performed in this study. The multi-stepped shaft is modeled as a non-uniform Timoshenko beam supported by anisotropic bearings. It is assumed that the shaft is spinning with constant speed about its longitudinal axis and subjected to a conservative axial force induced by front and rear impellers attached to the shaft. The structural model incorporates non-classical features such as transverse shear and rotary inertia. A structural coupling between vertical and lateral motions is induced by Coriolis acceleration terms. The governing equations are derived via Hamilton's variational principle and the equations are transformed to the standard form of an eigenvalue problem. The implications of combined gyroscopic effect, conservative axial force, bearing stiffness and damping are revealed and a number of pertinent conclusions are outlined. In this study analytical results are compared with those from ANSYS finite element analysis and experimental modal testing.

  • There has been studied flow to minimize the spot size to increase data capacity. Optical data storage devices are being developed near practical limits with wavelength and NA of 405nm and 0.85. There has been studied many types of next generation storage devices such as blu-ray multilayer system, probe based data storage and holographic data storage. Among these data storage devices, solid immersion lens(SIL) based near field recording (NFR) has been widely studied. In this system, SIL is the key component that focuses the laser beam with a very small size which enables ultra high data capacity. Therefore, optical performance evaluation system is required for SIL assembly. In this dissertation, a simple and accurate SIL assembly measurement method is proposed with wedge plate lateral shearing interferometer(LSI). Wedge plate LSI is cheaper than commercialized interferometer, robust to the vibration and the moving distance for phase shifting is large that is order of micrometer. We designed the thickness, wedge angle, material, surface quality and wavelength of wedge plate as 1mm, 0.02degree, fused silica, lamda/10(10-5) and 405nm, respectively. Also, we confirmed simulation and experimental results with quantitative analysis. This simple wedge plate LSI can be applied to different types of SIL such as solid immersion mirror(SIM), hemispherical, super-hemispherical and elliptical SIL.

A Study on the Vibration Characteristics of Subway Structure by Train Load (열차 하중에 의한 지하철 구조물의 진동 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the vibration analysis of the underground box structures induced train movement is studied. In order to perform these analysis, dynamic data, which was measured when subway is in service, are gained by attaching accelerometers on the structure such as lower beam, lateral wall and upper slab. Also, accelerometers are attached on the lower beams and side walls of the gravel ballast and concrete ballast sections in order to compare vibration due to ballast materials. The vibration results of upper slabs and lower beams reveal that the vibration on the upper slabs is greater than the lower beams. Also, the results of the crack gauge on the upper slab show that crack width dose not change due to vibration, These means that the effect of the vibration on the structure is very limited. In order to evaluate the vibration of the structure, acceleration unit is converted to velocity unit comparing with the existing velocity data gained from the platforms.
