This paper presents the results of an investigation on the effect of foundation stiffness on the performance of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls (SRWalls). Laboratory model tests were performed using a reduced-scale physical model to capture the fundamentals of the manner in which the foundation stiffness affects the behavior of SRWalls. A series of finite-element analyses were additionally performed on a prototype wall in order to supplement the findings from the model tests and to examine full-scale behavior of SRWalls encountered in the field. The results of the present investigation indicate that lateral wall displacements significantly increase with the decrease of the foundation stiffness. Also revealed is that the increase in wall displacements is likely to be caused by the rigid body movement of the reinforced soil mass with negligible internal deformation within the reinforced soil mass. The findings from this study support the current design approaches, in which the problem concerning the foundation condition are treated in the frame work of the external stability rather than the internal stability. The implications of the findings from this study to current design approaches are discussed in detail.

The author obtained the computed tomograms around the condylar head from 10 normal subjects and 5 patients having clicking condylar head from 10 normal subjects and 5 patients having clicking sound or limitation of mouth opening by using a Hitachi-W 500. And then. the author had the axial analysis of condyle position and sagittal analysis of that after sagittal reformation on centric occlusion and 18㎜ interincisal opening. Transcranial view and submentovertex view were taken and compared with computed tomographic view. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Median angle of long axis of condylar head was 17 degrees on centric occlusion and the angles of long axis of both condylar heads were reduced symmetrically on 18㎜ interincisal opening in normal group. however. in the patient group, the affected side of condyle heads showed greater change in the angle on 18㎜ interincisal opening. 2. In the patient group, the condyle head of affected side was located superiorly to that of normal side on centric occlusion and the discrepancy of condular positional height was increased after 18㎜ interincisal opening. 3. The distances from medial pole of condylar head to triangular fossa of temporal bone were same on both right and left side in normal group, however, in the patient group, the distance of affected side was wider than that of opposite side on centric occusion and became narrower than the opposite side on 18㎜ interincisal opening. 4. The distances of posterior joint space were same on both right and left side. The distance t lateral pole 1/3 of condyle head was similar to that on transcranial view on centric occlusion in normal group. 5. The distances of posterior joint space were narrower in patient group than in normal group. 6. Conclusively, the affected condylar head of patient showed postero-latero-superior displacement on centric occlusion and larger range of rotational movement on 18㎜ interincisal opening.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to compare the ability to control postural sway during perturbation when stroke patients received postural sway induced by head rotation. Methods: This study included 15 stroke patients and 15 healthy adults. Each group was measured by 3D motion analysis for determination of the angle of the neck in static position and by balance performance monitor for estimation of swaying angle in both neutral posture and head rotation position. These results were then analyzed in order to compare the healthy control group and the stroke patients group. Results: In both static posture ($60.7{\pm}4.81$) and dynamic posture ($51.46{\pm}6.87$, $70.8{\pm}6.55$), significant decreases were observed in the angle of head rotation of the patient group, compared to the healthy group (p<0.05), and significant decreases were observed in the sway angle of the patient group when in the neutral position ($3.62{\pm}7$, $24{\pm}0.60$) and head rotation ($3.04{\pm}0.80$, $51.46{\pm}6.87$), compared to the healthy group (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to these findings, patients with stroke tend to restrict the ROM of head rotation and swaying angle in dynamic posture and maintain their posture instability using limitation of head movement relative to the trunk and sway angle of area which is larger than that of affected side in unaffected side.
Congenital undescended scapula is congenital structural abnormality which affects only one side usually. Scapula located higher than the usual and rotating deformity that inferior angle to medial side, superior angle to lateral side is common. This report presents one case of the surgical therapy of a sprengel deformity patient who passed an optimal operation period with age $3{\sim}7$years old, and includes brief review of the literature. 7 years old boy whose chief complaint was the limitation of left scapular-thoracic movement and he had an omovertebral bone bridge and periscapular muscle atrophy. There was improvement of motion ranges and cosmetic problems after surgical treatment.
Purpose: This retrospective study evaluated the changes in hyoid bone and tongue positions as well as oral cavity volume after mandibular setback by BSSRO. Materials and Methods: 18 Koreans who underwent BSSRO to correct mandibular prognathism were studied. Lateral cephalograms were taken and traced preoperatively (T0), immediately (T1) and approximately 6 months postoperatively (T2). Submentovertex radiograghs were taken and traced before surgery (T0) and about 6 months after surgery (T2). The area and volume of oral cavity, the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the hyoid bone and tongue dorsum were measured. Results: Mandibular setback surgery resulted in a significant reduction of lower oral cavity volume. The hyoid bone displaced posteroinferiorly immediately after surgery, and it tended to return to its original vertical position at 6 month after mandibular setback by BSSRO. The retropalatal space around tongue was maintained and the retrolingual space around tongue was reduced immediately postoperatively. The readaptation of tongue was not evident for that the follow up period was not long enough. No significant statistical correlations between the amounts of mandibular setback and the changes of oral cavity volume were observed. Conclusion: Mandibular setback surgery resulted in a significant reduction of lower oral cavity volume, which was most likely attributable to the posterior movement of the mandible. More subjects and long-term observations should be performed to assess the changes of oropharyngeal configuration following mandibular setback surgery.
The purpose of this study was to assess the early effect of FR III on the growing patients with anterior cross-bite. The lateral cephalograms and models were obtained from 7 patients at the time of pretreatment and correction of anterior cross-bite. The results were as follows: 1. A slight tendency of rotation toward anterosuperior direction and the growth to anterior direction were shown in maxilla. 2. There were a little change of mandibular vertical position and increase in lower facial height although some variations existed. 3. The bodily or labial tipping movement was shown in maxillary incisors. 4. The lingual tipping of mandibular incisors was shown in all cases. 5. Maxillary arch width increased while mandibular arch width usually changed a little although some variations existed. But it was difficult to summary in a word because variable responses were noted according to a wide variety of skeletal type, growth, and malocclusion.
This study was carried out in order to findout the amount of tooth movement, the changes arch size and the changes in arch morphology following orthodontic treatment and to provide a guideline for to predict post-treatment arch morphology. The sample group for this study consists of 15 males and 22 females, totalling in 37 persons, who received orthodontic treatment at Orthodontic Department of Dankook Univ. Dental Hospital. They are classified into Extraction Class I treatment group (E I), Non-extraction Class I treatment group (N I), and Non-extraction Class III treatment group (N III), according to their pre-treatment malocclusion state and methods of treatment. Following conclusions and averaged dental arch form for each group were obtained by cephalometric linear measurements and dental arch measurements using pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalograms and plaster study models. 1. Intercanine width were reduced in max. of both EI and NI during the period of treatment, 2. Intermolar width were reduced in max. of EI and increased in max. of NI. Therefore although there was no difference between these two groups before the treatment, intermolar width of the max, of NI was wider than that of E1 after the treatment. 3. PMV-incisor distance and PMV-canine distance were decreased in both max. and mand. of EI and that of NI, during the period of treatment. PMV-molar distance was decreased in both max. and mand. of NI and in mand. of NIII. 4. Items that showed stability during the treatment were: max. & mand. PMV-molar distance, mand. intercanine and intermolar width in EI; mand. intercanine and intermolar width in NI; mand. & max. PMV-incisor distance, PMV-canine distance, max. PMV-molar distance and max. & mand. intercanine and intermolar width in NIII. 5. The differences in averaged canine and molar variances to post-treatment dental arch form were present only in EI and in NI. There was no variance between maxilla and mandible in each group.
The purpose of this article was to evaluate the effects of a new upper molar distalization system, the Frog Appliance, on dentofacial structures in a Class II, division 1 patient. An 11-year-old girl was referred to our clinic for orthodontic treatment. She had a mild skeletal Class II malocclusion with Class II molar and canine relationship on both sides. The treatment plan included distalization of the upper first molars bilaterally followed by full fixed appliance therapy. For the upper molar distalization, a new system, the Frog Appliance, was constructed and applied. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were used to evaluate the treatment results. Distalization of the upper first molars was achieved in four months successfully, and Class I molar relationship was obtained. Total treatment time was 16 months. According to the results of the cephalometric evaluation, a nearly bodily distal molar movement with a slight anchorage loss was attained. In conclusion, the Frog Appliance was found to be a simple, ef ective, non-invasive, and compliance-free intraoral distalization appliance for achieving bilateral molar distalization.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar changes after miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) in young adults by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: This retrospective study included 14 patients (mean age, 20.1 years; range, 16-26 years) with maxillary transverse deficiency treated with MARPE. Skeletal and dentoalveolar changes were evaluated using CBCT images acquired before and after expansion. Statistical analyses were performed using paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test according to normality of the data. Results: The midpalatal suture was separated, and the maxilla exhibited statistically significant lateral movement (p < 0.05) after MARPE. Some of the landmarks had shifted forwards or upwards by a clinically irrelevant distance of less than 1 mm. The amount of expansion decreased in the superior direction, with values of 5.5, 3.2, 2.0, and 0.8 mm at the crown, cementoenamel junction, maxillary basal bone, and zygomatic arch levels, respectively (p < 0.05). The buccal bone thickness and height of the alveolar crest had decreased by 0.6-1.1 mm and 1.7-2.2 mm, respectively, with the premolars and molars exhibiting buccal tipping of $1.1^{\circ}-2.9^{\circ}$. Conclusions: Our results indicate that MARPE is an effective method for the correction of maxillary transverse deficiency without surgery in young adults.
The objective of preventive dentistry is the maintenance of a healthy dentition for the life of a patient. Unfortunately, if an individual has not received the benefit of a comprehensive program of preventive dentistry and has finally reached the edentulous state, as a consequence, he receives a set of complete denture. Dentures are mechanical devices and subject to the principles of mechanics. In some cases, the general health and nutritional status of the patient are felt to be the causative factors. But, the most important thing in residual ridge resorption is felt to be caused by the unequal distribution of functional forces. This study was to analyze mandibular stresses of complete denture occlusion by three dimensional finite element method. The results were as follows ; 1. As deformation and stress distribution of the complete denture of the mandible were concentrated on the upper lingual side of the mandible, alveolar ridge resorption of the mandible occurred from lingual side to labio-buccal side. 2. Analyzing by three dimensional F. E. M., the mandible is a very effective form for tolerating stress and deformation biomechanically. 3. According to the concentration of stress distibution in the upper buccal side of the lower posteriors, buccal shelf area must be a primary stress bearing area in the lower complete denture. 4. Lower complete denture moved horizontally to the balancing side under lateral occlusal force. 5. Bilateral balanced occlusion should be constructed in the complete denture for denture stability, especially in the protrusive movement. 6. Physical property of the denture base material was as important for stress distribution in the denture base as or even more than that in the mandible. 7. Impression technique is very important because of most of stress was concentrated between them due to close contact of the mandible and the denture base.
