  • Experimental studies are investigated for RC column retrofitting under cyclic load. Design considerations are jacketing of steel plate of carbon fiber with epoxy bonding, use of unbonded plate, additional concrete grouting, ratio of additional longitudinal steel reinforcement and longitudinal configuration of additional ties. Investigated results are 1) jacketing and additional reinforcements are effective for strengthening, 2) use of additional grouting is less effective with respect to increased section. Future studies are needed to evaluate the requirements about additional reinforcements for member stress level, 3) bond between original and additional grout concrete.

  • With the increase in the use of High-Strength Concrete(HSC) despite the its weakness like brittle characteristic, it is important to improve the performance of HSC columns, nowadays. Therefore, it is common to use higher strength steel in HSC for the purpose of ductility and strength improvement. This experimental study was set up to investigate the inelastic behavior of HSC(700kg/$cm^{2}$) columns subjected to combined axial and repeated lateral loads. Effects of key variables such as the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement, tie configuration and tie yield strength are studied in this research program. Test results indicate that inelastic response of HSC columns improve with proper confinement of core concrete. Increasing the amount of transverse reiuorement results in increased ductility.

  • The object of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing RC bridge piers that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification in 1992. In this research, adopted test parameters were limited ductile design or non-seismic design, aspect ratio, confinement steel type, loading pattern, lap-spliced ratio for longitudinal reinforcement. This study has been performed to verify the effect of test parameter by quasi-static test. Quasi-static test has been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as lateral force-displacement hysteretic curve, envelope curve etc. It has been observed that seismic performance of lap-spliced test specimen, non-seismically designed specimens, was significantly reduced.

  • The electromodulation methods of photoreflectanceand the related technique of contactless electroreflectance(CER) are valuable tools in the evaluation of important device parameters for structures such as heterojunction bipolar transistors, pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistors, and quantum dots(QDs). CER is a very general principle of experimental physics. Instead of measuring the optical reflectance of the material, the derivative with respect to a modulating electric field is evaluated. This procedure generates sharp, differential-like spectra in the region of interband (intersubband) transitions. We conduct electric-optical studies of both GaAs layers and InAs selfassembled QDs grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Strong GaAsbandgap energy is measured in both structures. In the case of lnAs monolayers in GaAs matrices, the strong GaAsbandgap energy is caused by the lateral quantum confinement.

  • In Fe/Gd multilayers, patterning effect on the interlayer coupling was studied by comparing patterned and unpatterned samples that were cut from a multilayer film. A comparative study of the two samples via temperature dependent Gd-specific magnetization vector using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) shows that the temperature dependence of the Gd magnetization vector can be modified in the patterned sample due to a competition between the patterning and antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling effects.

  • The ductility is an important consideration in the design of reinforced concrete structures. In the seismic design of reinforced concrete columns, it is necessary to allow for relatively large ductilities that the seismic energy be absorbed without shear failure of significant strength degradation after the reinforcement yielding in columns. Therefore, prediction of the ductility should be as accurate as possible. This research investigate the ductile behavior of rectangular reinforced high-strength concrete columns like as bridge piers with confinement steel. The effects on the ductility of axial load, lateral reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, shear span ratio, and compressive strength of concrete were investigated analytically using layered section analysis. as the results, it was proposed the proper relationship between ductility and variables and formulated into equations.

  • This study investigated the behavior of R/C column confined with headed crossties subjected to eccentric loading. The 16 specimens are designed to have adequate confinement steel, determined by ACI seismic design. The variables studied in this research test are eccentricity to depth ratios, spacing of lateral steel and the anchor type of end of crossties. From the test results, all columns showed similar behavior up to the peak load but those columns laterally confined with head presented more ductile behavior after the peak load. The comparisons indicate that the flexural behavior of confined-concrete columns can be computed resonable accurately by P-M interaction curve.

  • This study investigated the influence of concrete compressive strength for the lateral confinement of high-strength spiral reinforcement. The main test parameters were the compressive strength of concrete, the yield strength of spiral reinforcement, and cross sectional shape. A total of 48 cylindrical test specimens with circularand rectangular sections were cast and tested under monotonic concentric compression.

  • Due to the heat confinement in the shallow region of the target for a short time scale, pulsed laser annealing has received an increasing interest for the fabrication of poly-Si thin film transistors(TFTs) on glass as a low cost substrate in the flat panel displays. The formation and growth mechanisms of poly silicon(poly-Si) grains in thin films are investigated using an excimer laser crystallization system. To understand the crystallization mechanism, the grain formations are observed by FESEM photography. The optical reflectance and transmittance during the crystallization process are measured using HeNe laser optics. A two-step ELC(Excimer Laser Crystallization) process is applied to enhance the grain formation uniformity.

  • On the basis of the philosophy that "the compressive axial load capacity after spalling of shell concrete should be maintained as that before spalling" by applying the confinement model of high strength concrete proposed in the previous proceeding paper and equivalent lateral confining pressure considering configurations of transverse reinforcement, the amounts of transverse reinforcement from the compressive capacity design method about high strength reinforced concrete tied columns can be calculated through the formula proposed in this paper. The proposed design equation of transverse steel amounts for high strength reinforced concrete tied columns was quite agreeable with the test results of HSC tied columns conducted by other researchers as well as author.as author.
