  • On this study, we researched the in-process monitoring during fiber laser welding as well as on the first paper. On the previous/formal study, we analyzed the change of emission signal on thin plate welding. On this study, however, we analyzed RMS and FFT with emission signals in laser welding on lap joint and butt joint of 8mm-thick 316L stainless steel. As the result, the movement of specific frequency peak was observed according to welding speed changes. Furthermore, frequency peak as a result of FFT on the thick plate welding are much clearer than on the thin plate welding. Therefore, it is expected that the welding parameter changes can be predicted in case of applying FFT to in-process monitoring.

  • For laser welding in shipbuilding industry, gap bridging capability is one of the most important characteristics to achieve the high productivity and good weld quality. Recently, laser-GMA hybrid welding process is regarded as a distinctive method to overcome the tight gap tolerance with improving the productivity. In this study, the influence of process parameters on the bead formation was experimentally analyzed and the relationship between the process parameters and geometric imperfections was investigated. It was revealed that undercut, excessive weld metal, excessive penetration and incompletely filled groove were the major geometric imperfections. The optimized wire feeding and arc pressure were necessary to ensure the gap bridging ability. The approach to select the process parameters was conducted for butt welding with up to 2mm joint gap, in which the sound weld beads were generated without changing the welding speed.

  • The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used for rapid detection of elemental compositions of various materials in multi-media (solid, liquid, gas, and aerosols). In this study, the aerosol-LIBS has been developed for real-time monitoring of process-induced particles produced during the semiconductor manufacturing. The developed aerosol-LIBS mainly consists of laser, optics, spectrometer, and aerosol chamber. A new aerosol chamber was constructed for the aerosol-LIBS to be applied for various semiconductor manufacturing process, including exhaust tubes, and low pressure and high temperature chamber. The aerosol-LIBS was evaluated by using laboratory generated aerosols for detection of various elements. As a result, P, Fe, Mg, Cu, Co, Ni, Ca, Na, and K emission lines were successfully detected by the aerosol-LIBS. Further evaluation of the aerosol-LIBS is being conducted.

  • The paint removal of fighter jets is just as important as the painting, because perfect paint removal ensures the quality of the exterior painting on the aircraft. However, the current conditions for paint removal work of the ROKAF's are poor. It is identified that the painting process currently implemented by the ROKAF is not only exposed to harmful compounds such as harmful dust and hexavalent chromium, but also consumes a lot of water. Thus, the introduction of advanced facility is considered. This study compares the fighter jets painting removal process currently applied by the Korean Air Force with the improved laser coating removal process of the US Air Force, and conducts an incremental analysis to perform economic analysis for the introduction of advanced facility. Four scenarios were envisioned on the premise of an increase in the number of fighters in the future, incremental analysis shows that laser coating removal method is advantageous in all scenarios. In addition, it is recommended that paint removal cycle keeps the current 12-year and the outsourcing amount to civilian depot is reduced.

  • In this paper, the principles, types and characteristics of the laser and laser soldering are introduced. Laser soldering methods for electronics, metals, semiconductors are also presented. Laser soldering is a non-contact process that transfers energy to solder joint by a precisely controlled beam. Demands for laser soldering are increasing due to bonding for complex circuits and local heating in micro joint. Laser absorption ratio depends on materials, and each material has different absorption or reflectivity of the laser beam, which requires fine adjustment of the laser beam. Laser types and operating conditions are also important factors for laser soldering performance. In this paper, the performance of Nd:YAG laser soldering is compared to the hot blast reflow. Meanwhile, a diode laser gives different wavelength and smaller parts with high performance, but it has various reliability issues such as heat loss, high power, and cooling technology. These issues need to be improved in the future, and further studies for laser micro-joining and soldering are required.

  • Laser welding of thermoplastics is a new jointing technique with a host of advantages. It is not only another extremely useful welding method but also a cost-effective alternative to traditional techniques involving screws or adhesives. Transmission laser-welding of thermoplastics such as polycarbonate(PC), polypropylene(PP), polyvinyl chloride(PVC), low density polyethylene(LDPE) and acrylic using a high power diode laser has been studied experimentally. The optical transmission of each plastic has been measured at laser wavelength of 808nm. The weld process has been characterized by the specific energy and weld time required for each plastic. The characteristics of laser welding between same plastics have also been analyzed.

  • World demand for natural gas has generated the need for many new land transmission pipelines to be installed in the next decade or so. Although mechanized gas metal arc welding is well developed, there are opportunities for cost savings by using alternative welding processes. Hybrid Nd:YAG laser - gas metal arc welding enables fibre optic delivery of the laser energy to a robotic welding head to be combined with the addition of extra energy and a consumable to produce good quality, deep penetration welds in a single pass. The present paper describes initial procedure development to optimize the laser and gas metal arc welding parameters for making joints in pipeline steel. Satisfactory joint quality was obtained and it is intended to develop the process to prototype field trials.
