  • Laser surface hardening technologies have been used to improve characteristics of wear and to enhance the fatigue resistance for mold parts. The objective of this research work is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as power of laser and defocused spot position, on the characteristics of laser surface hardening for the case of SKD61 steel. CW Nd:YAG laser is selected as the heat source. The optical lens with the elliptical profile is designed to obtain a wide surface hardening area with a uniform hardness. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum hardness is approximatly 740 Hv when the power, focal position and the travel of laser are 1,095 W, +1mm and 0.3 m/min, respectively. In addition, the hardening width using the elliptical lens was three time larger than that using the defocusing of laser beam.

The bjective of this research work is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as power of laser and defocused spot position, on the characteristics of laser heat treatment for the case of SM45C medium carbon steel. CW Nd:YAG laser is selected as the heat source. The optical lens with the elliptical profile is designed to obtain a wide heat treatment area with a uniform hardness. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum hardness is approximatly 780 Hv when the power and the travel of laser are 1,095 W and 0.6 m/min, respectively. In addition, the hardening width using the elliptical lens was three time larger than that using the defocusing of laser beam.

  • For electron beam lithography and SEM(scanning electron microscopy) applications, miniaturized electrostatic lenses called a microcolumn have been fabricated. In this paper, we report the fabrication technique for 20~30$\mu\textrm{m}$ apertures of electron lenses based on silicon and Mo membrane using an active Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Experimental conditions of laser micromachining for silicon and Mo membrane are improved. The geometrical structures, such as the diameter and the preciseness of the micron-size aperture are dependent upon the total energy of the laser pulse train, laser pulse width, and the diameter of laser spot.

  • In this paper, an aberration free aspherical lens is designed and machined by new design method and the spherical aberration measuring system is developed. It confirmed the propriety of new design method by measuring optical characteristics of machined lens with the new measuring system. The system could measure a spherical aberration quantitatively by using CCD camera, laser, collimator and so on.

  • We designed optical systems for a mobile phone camera using a spherical SELFOC lens and an aspherical plastic lens. Since the radial index distribution gives an additional design parameter for optical design, an aspheric lens could be replaced by a spherical lens. The imaging performances of the design were compared with conventional 2P design composed of two aspherical plastic lenses. In the first stage of study, we designed 1GRIN 1P lenses by using commercially available SELFOC materials. But, the conventional 2P lenses had better performance than the 1GRIN 1P lenses. In the 1GRIN 1P designs, the performance depends on index variation of GRIN material, the larger variation gives the better performance. Hence, we tried to design by using fictitious GRIN materials which have large index variation. We found if the index variation could be increased to about 3 times that of currently available SELFOC materials, the 1GRIN 1P lens will have equivalent or better performance than the conventional 2P design.

  • In this study, an embedded ranging system based on a laser structured light image is developed. The distance measurement by the structured light image processing has efficient computation because the burdensome correspondence problem is avoidable. In order to achieve robustness against environmental illumination noise and real-time laser structured light image processing, a bandpass optical filter is adopted in this study. The proposed ranging system has an embedded image processor performing the whole image processing and distance measurement, and so reduces the computational burden in the main control system. A system calibration algorithm is presented to compensate for the lens distortion.

  • Head up display is in increasing demand for advanced devices in the modern luxury vehicles. It helps drivers focus on driving environment on the road. While HUD technology with LED has advanced, the brightness in daylight can be still an issue to be resolved. Laser light source is a possible solution to overcome the brightness problem and optimal optics design is required for the best performance. Sample design of optics is proposed and detail procedure of lens design evaluation is presented in this paper. The results were characterized by using a ray tracing method and qualitative analysis for spot and DEE is also presented. The overall error or image distortion remained in the target range of $25{\mu}m$ and the simulated image demonstrated possible use in the automotive applications.

  • We analyzed through numerical simulations the properties of a square beam homogenizer near the target for laser shock peening. The efficiency was calculated near the target by considering the plasma threshold of the metals. We defined the depth of focus of the square beam homogenizer with a given efficiency near the target. Then, we found the relationship between the depth of focus for the laser shock peening and four main parameters of the square beam homogenizer: the plasma threshold of the metal, the number of lenslets in the array-lens, the focal length of the condenser lens and the input beam size.
