This study was performed to investigate the effect of low power laser irradiation on epidermal growth factor(EGF) expression in the burned skin of the rats. Burns of about 3cm in diameter were created with 75'c water on the back of the rats, and the lesion of experimental group were irradiated on days 1, 2, and 3 postwounding. Control tensions were not irradiated. After burns, low power laser irradiation was applied by using 1000Hz, 830nm GaAlAs (Gallium-aluminum- arsenide) semiconductor diode laser. The expression of epidermal growth factor evaluated immunohistochemistry on mouse anti-EGF. The results of this study were as follows 1. In expression of EGF, the lesion of experimental group made EGF to more induce significantly than control tensions. 2. EGF immunoreactivity in burned skin were increased markedly 3 days after burns, and increased gradually from 1 day to 2 days in burns which is laser irradiation These data suggest that low power laser have wound healing effect in the burned skin of the rats.

This study was designed to determine the effects of swimming and low power laser on rheumatoid arthritis in Sprague-Dawley rats. Rheumatoid arthritis was induced in 36 rats among 48 Sprague-Dawley rats by the subcutaneous injection of .05 $m{\ell}$ Freund's Complete Adjuvant into the right hind paw and .05 $m{\ell}$ Freund's Complete Adjuvant into the right hind knee joint capsule. A second injection was performed by the same method using .1 $m{\ell}$ Freund's Complete Adjuvant per a rat. Arthritic rats were divided into 8 groups: each 1 week and 2 weeks of arthritic swimming, arthritic laser, arthritic case control and normal group. In this study, several experimental tests were performed to determine the concentration of Interleukin-6, the space of the knee joint and the thickness of the hind paw. The concentration of Interleukin-6 and hind paw thickness decreased in the swimming group and laser group as compared to the control group. The space of the knee joint increased significantly after the swimming exercise. Swimming and low power laser therapy positively affect rheumatoid arthritis in rats affect by decreasing the concentration of Interleukin-6 and hind paw thickness, and increasing the space of the knee joint.
We designed the experiments to elucidate the anti-inflammatory effect of low power laser stimulation on acupoint or non-acupoint using arthrogenic solution induced poly arthritis animal model. In order to achieve the experimental purpose, change in body weight paw edema, pathological changes in inflammed pint and the serum interlukin-6 level were measured after arthritis induction in acupoint later stimulated group, non acupoint laser stimulated group and non treated control animal. The results were summerized as follows: 1. The consistent increase in body weight was observed in the normal animal during whole experimental period, while the induction of arthritis significantly suppressed increase in body weight from the 15 day after arthritis induction. Especially, non treated animal group showed more suppressive effect on increase in body weight as compared to that of low power laser stimulated groups (P<0.05). 2. Low power laser stimulation on acupoint (Zusanli) significantly inhibited edema in the left side paw from the 12th day after arthritis induction as compared to that of non treated animals. This suppressive effect on paw edema was maintained until the end of experiment. 3. Laser treatment on acupoint dramatically suppressed the radiological change (i.e. new bone proliferation and soft tissue swelling) caused by arthritis as compared to that of non treated group animals. 4. Low power laser treatment reduced the increase in serum interlukin-6 caused by arthritis induction to levels observed in the normal animals. In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that low power laser stimulation on acupoint has potent anti-inflammatory effect on arthritis. Thus it is recommended that low power laser be used for long term treatment of arthritis induced inflammation. However, further study is necessary to clarify the possible side effect of laser treatment depending upon intensity and duration of stimulation.

This study was conducted to examine the increasing effects of Ga-As-Al laser Koryo-hand acupuncture on experimental pressure threshold. Forty healthy subjects (female=20. male=20) aged 21 to 30 years were randomly assigned to two treatment groups with same ratio in sex. The subjects in the experimental group (n=20) received Ga-As-Al laser stimulation, and those in the control group (n=20) received sham stimulation on appropriate Koryo-hand acupuncture points M10 on the left hand which is reflex point of upper trapezius portion. Experimental pressure threshold at the contralateral upper trapezius was determined with a pressure algometer and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) before and after treatment. The change of pressure threshold between pretreatment and posttreatment in the experimental group was greater than that in the control group (p<0.05). The result indicates that Ga-As-Al laser Koryo-hand acupuncture increases experimental pressure threshold and suggests that it is an effective noninvasive pain management technique.
Objective: As early as 1967, professor Endre Mester's group published the first scientific report concerning the effects of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on the skin of rats. After that, there have been some two thousand research reports from many countries in which the biological effects of low level lasers have been demonstrated. We reviewed some theses about LLLT published in Korea recently, and we make a proposal concerning the new method of study using LLLT in Oriental Medicine. Methods: We have selected 12 medical theses about low level laser therapy published in Korean Oriental Medicine journals recently, reviewed them, and investigated their methods. Results and Conclusion: There were several clinical studies in Korea about hyperlipidemia, hypercholesteremia, hyperfibrinogenemia, hyperlipoproteinemia, headache, dizziness, stroke, pain and numbness published from 1996 to 2000 using LLLT. The number of theses of good quality is showing a tendency to increase, recently. Sooner or later LLLT will be a very useful treatment and we believe that it will be an alternative useful method in Oriental Medical fields. There have been some negative public opinions about LLLT voiced in the Korean Oriental Medical society recently, but we expect a positive re-evaluation of this new treatment within Oriental Medicine in the near future.
Laser photobiostimulation (LPBS) is one of the recent additions to therapeutic procedures used in chronic pain management. Though widely used, a clear understanding of its mechanism of action was not disclosed. In addition, the energy density that produces maximal benefit has not yet been established. The purposes of this study were to determine the effects of LPBS on pain relief in rat and to determine treatment dosage. Eight, 8-week old female, Sprague-Dawley rats were employed. All subjects were assigned to one of four groups: a sham laser group, a 0.4 $J/cm^2$ laser group, a 2.0 $J/cm^2$ laser group, and a 6.0 $J/cm^2$ laser group. Ga-As laser (904 nm wavelength) of three different energy densities (0.4, 2.0, 6.0 $J/cm^2$) was applied on a tail acupuncture point and tail-flick latencies were measured five times pre-and post-treatment as following schedules: 30 minutes, 1 hour. 24 hours. 48 hours, and 7 days later. An increase in pain threshold was demonstrated following LPBS, employing rat tail-flick test. LPBS of 2.0 $J/cm^2$ produced hypoalgesia of rapid onset and short duration (1 hour, 24 hours) while the response to 6.0 $J/cm^2$ was delayed and lasted longer (48 hours, 7 days). LPBS of 0.4 $J/cm^2$ did not produce any hypoalgesia.
The purposes of this study was to evaluate the effect of low power GaAsAl laser on tissue contraction in a linear incision wound on rat skin. The linear incision wound was made on the midline of the backside in the experimental animals. Low power laser applications with different intensities such as 3, 6, or 10 mW were applied to the experimental animals twice a day for 10 days. On either the seventh or tenth postoperative day, the quantitative analysis of the inflammatory reaction surrounding the linear incision wounds on the rats were performed using enzymatical analysis of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. The number of neutrophil was $.07-1.0{\times}106/m{\ell}$ from a normal blood sample that was obtained from the normal experimental animals. Each concentration of neutrophil showed .04-.62 unit activity of MPO. Therefore, the 6 unit activity of MPO per neutrophil was $.57{\pm}.014{\times}10^{-6}$ unit. On the 7th and 10th post operative day, non treated tissues demonstrated increased MPO activity as compared to that of normal tissue. These data indicated that the inflammatory reaction of tissue was induced after wound induction and the MPO activity were increased in the inflammed tissues. While both 3 mW or 6 mW intensity of laser treatments did not affect the tissue MPO activity, 10 mW intensity of laser treatment significantly decreased the tissue MPO activity on the 7th and 10th post operative day. These data demonstrated that only 10 mW intensity of laser treatment successfully suppressed tissue inflammatory reaction after wound induction. In conclusion, these findings suggested that 10 mW of GaAIAs laser treatments effectively suppressed the inflammatory reaction of tissue that was induced during the wound healing process.
We evaluated the effect of low power GaAsAl laser on re-epithelization in full-thickness excisional wound of rat skin. Two full-thickness excisions were made on the back of the experimental animals. Low power laser applications with 10mW intensity were treated experimental animals twice a day for 7 days. On the seventh postoperative day the quantitative analysis of re-epithelization was performed using immunohistochemical staining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). The majority of PCNA immunoreactive cells was observed at epithelial cells in the margin of full thickness excisional wound. The low power laser treatments significantly increased the number of PCNA immunoreactive cell as compared to that of non treated animal group (p<0.01). The shape of PCNA immunoreactive cell appeared as small dark, round to ovoid structures. Most PCNA immunoreactive cells exhibited a high intensity of staining that contrasted sharply with the surrounding background. In conclusion, these findings suggest that GaAlAs laser treatments effectively enhance the epithelial wound healing by the stimulating cell proliferation. Furthermore, the majority of cell proliferation occurred in the margin of full thickness excisional wound.
The use of dental implants has become a mainstay of rehabilitative and restorative dentistry. With an impressive clinical success rate, there remain a few minor clinical issues with the use of implants such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. The use of laser technology with implants has a fascinating breadth of applications, beginning from their precision manufacturing to clinical uses for surgical site preparation, reducing pain and inflammation, and promoting osseointegration and tissue regeneration. This latter aspect is the focus of this review, which outlines various studies of implants and laser therapy in animal models. The use of low level light therapy or photobiomodulation has demonstrated its efficacy in these studies. Besides more research studies to understand its molecular mechanisms, significant efforts are needed to standardize the clinical dosing and delivery protocols for laser therapy to ensure the maximal efficacy and safety of this potent clinical tool for photobiomodulation.
This studies were to investigate the effects of low power Helium-Neon Infra-Red(He-Ne IR) laser on the changes of the chemical components in serum of the peripheral neuropathy in diabetic rats. The twenty one Spraque-Dawley adult male rats were assigned to the 3 groups: the control group(N=7), the diabetic group(n=7) and the laser group(n=7). The diabetic group was induced with a single intravenous injecion of 50mg/kg body weight streptozotocin dissolved to 0.01mol/L citrate buffer, pH 4.5. The experimental1asser group was irradiated low power He-Ne IR laser for 5 minutes every day during 21 days to the diabetic group. The results were as follows: 1. ALT was increased the laser treatment group than the diabetic group. but that was not significant. 2. AST was significantly increased the laser treatment group than the control group and the diabetic group. 3. LDH was significantly decreased the diabetic group and laser treatment group. 4. ALP was significantly increased the diabetic group and laser treatment group. 5. CHOL was significantly decreased the laser treatment group than the diabetic group. 6. TRIG was significantly increased the laser treatment group than the diabetic group. 7. CPK was significantly increased the laser treatment group than the control group and the diabetic group.
