  • Laser heat treatment technologies have been used to improve characteristics of wear and to enhance the fatigue resistance for automotive parts. The bjective of this research work is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as power of laser and defocused spot position, on the characteristics of laser heat treatment for the case of SM45C medium carbon steel. CW Nd:YAG laser is selected as the heat source. The optical lens with the elliptical profile is designed to obtain a wide heat treatment area with a uniform hardness. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum hardness is approximatly 780 Hv when the power and the travel of laser are 1,095 W and 0.6 m/min, respectively. In addition, the hardening width using the elliptical lens was three time larger than that using the defocusing of laser beam.

  • With the PEO(Plasma electrolytic oxidation) surface treatment, the oxide film of aluminum alloy is growing in a short time. The reflectance measurement to find the oxygen atoms in the oxide could be investigated. In order to form a thicker oxide film, the PEO surface treatment should be uniformly controlled in processing time.

  • Mold may experience deterioration of molding quality as the abrasion of mold occurring due to friction between mold and molded product works as allowance in the course of press process. Therefore, to improve the wear-resistance of mold, methods like nitriding, carburizing, flame and induction surface hardening treatment etc have been applied. However, as such methods are accompanied by problems like shape limitation or product deformation etc, laser surface treatment technology is under review as surface treatment method that can solve such problems. Therefore, in this study, mold material cast iron was surface-treated by using high power diode laser. In previous report 1 and report 2, the heat treatment characteristics were compared by the differences of die materials and shapes, then this paper observed microstructure by using optical microscope and scanning electronic microscope to analyze the structural difference of hardened zone, interface area and base metal after heat treatment. And the structural condition was grasped through EDS. As a result of microstructure, hardened zone showed formation of acicular martensite.

  • In this study, the coating of an Al-Cr layer on the surface of a Zircaloy-4 alloy was carried out through plasma pretreatment coating and a laser surface melting process. Two different conditions for laser treatment, severe or minimal surface melting of the Zr alloy substrate, were applied to form the final coating. When there was significant surface melting of the Zr alloy, the solidification microstructure of the newly formed coating layer was mainly composed of needle-shaped $Al_3Zr$, Al(Cr) and $Al_7Cr$ phases. On the other hand, the solidification microstructure of the coating layer was mainly composed of Al(Cr) and $Al_7Cr$ phases when there was minimal surface melting of Zr base in the laser process. However, when the coating was maintained at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, significant inter-diffusion occurred between the phases in the coating. As a result, the upper part of the coating layer was observed to mainly consist of $Al_3Zr$ and $Al_8Cr_5$ phases, regardless of the laser treatment conditions.

  • Background and Objectives A picosecond-domain laser treatment using a microlens array (MLA) or a diffractive optical element elicits therapeutic micro-injury zones in the skin. This study examined the patterns of tissue reactions after delivering multiple pulses of 1,064-nm, MLA-type, picosecond neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser treatment. Materials and Methods Multiple pulses of picosecond laser treatment were delivered to ex vivo human or brown micropig skin and analyzed histopathologically. A high-speed cinematographic study was performed to visualize the multiple pulses of picosecond laser energy-induced skin reactions in in vivo human skin. Results In the ex vivo human skin, a picosecond laser treatment at a fluence of 0.3 J/cm2 over 100 non-stacking passes generated multiple lesions of thermally-initiated laser-induced optical breakdown (TI-LIOB) in the epidermis and dermis. In the ex vivo micropig skin, stacking pulses of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 at a fluence of 0.3 J/cm2 generated distinct round to oval zones of tissue coagulation in the mid to lower dermis. High-speed cinematography captured various patterns of twinkling, micro-spot reactions on the skin surface over 100 stacked pulses of a picosecond laser treatment. Conclusion Multiple pulses of 1,064-nm, MLA-type, picosecond laser treatment elicit marked TI-LIOB reactions in the epidermis and areas of round to oval thermal coagulation in the mid to deep dermis.

  • A recent laboratory study has demonstrated improved caries lesion resistance with enamel that was exposed to $CO_2$ laser irradiation for very short time period. When topical fluoride treatment was performed before or after laser irradiation, reductions in dental caries. The purpose of this scanning electron microscopic(SEM) study and atomic force microscope study was to characterize surface alterations in tooth enamel after in vitro laser irradiation alone and combined topical fluoride treatment either before or after laser irradiation. The treatment effects of laser irradiation led to the formation of an irregular, mild porosities and fine fissures, also created granular materials. But when laser irradiation was followed by APF, the enamel surface had homogenous architecture. The result led to the caries resistance effects by these granular structures have been considered to represent redeposited mineral phases due to the mobilization of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride from lased enamel.

  • Titanium (Ti) has been widely used for dental implant due to great biocompatibility and bonding ability against natural alveolar bone. A lot of titanium surface modification has been introduced in dentistry and, among them, methods to introduce micro/nano-roughened surface were considered as clinically approved strategy for accelerating osseointegration of Ti dental implant. To have synergetic effect with topography oriented favors in cell attachment, chair-side surface treatment with reproducibility of micro/nano-topography is introduced as next strategy to further enhance cellular functionalities. Extensive research has been investigated to study the potential of micro/nano-topography preserved chair-side surface treatment for Ti dental implant. This review will discuss ultraviolet, low level of laser therapy and non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma on Ti dental implant with micro/nano-topography as next generation of surface treatment due to its abilities to induce super-hydrophilicity or biofunctionality without change of topographical cues.

  • Statement of problem: The sealing of the opened dentinal tubules that follows the tooth preparation for the prosthodontic restoration is considered as clinical process to reduce postoperative sensitivity. Purpose: This study investigated the effect of desensitization treatment on shear bond strength of luting cements. Materials and Method: Total 80 dentin specimens were divided into two groups according to the kinds of luting cements. Each groups was further divided into 4 subgroups with AQ $bond^{(R)}$, $Saforide^{(R)}$, Diode laser $MDL-10^{(R)}$ application and without desensitization treatment. After desensitization treatment application, Ni-Cr specimens were luted to dentin surface with Fuji $CEM^{(R)}$ and $Panavia-F^{(R)}$. Specimens were placed in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and shear bond strength between metal and dentin was measured by a universal testing machine. Results: 1. In Fuji $CEM^{(R)}$ cemented groups, the combination of AQ $bond^{(R)}$ showed the greatest strength, followed by diode laser, no desensitizer treatment, and $Saforide^{(R)}$. Both AQ $bond^{(R)}$ and Diode laser groups had a significant difference than no desensitization treatment group and $Saforide^{(R)}$ group(p<0.05). 2. In $Panavia-F^{(R)}$ cemented groups, the combination of Diode laser showed the greatest strength, followed by AQ $bond^{(R)}$, $Saforide^{(R)}$, and No desensitization treatment. All desensitization treatment groups had a significant difference than no desensitization treatment group(p<0.05). 3. All $Panavia-F^{(R)}$ groups showed a significant higher shear bond strength than all Fuji $CEM^{(R)}$ groups(p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed possibility of bond strength increase after desensitization treatment. The application of desensitization treatments like AQ $bond^{(R)}$, $Saforide^{(R)}$, and Diode laser $MDL-10^{(R)}$ have advantages in exposed dentin surface after tooth prep.
