Laser aided direct metal deposition (LADMD) process offers the ability to make a metal component directly from 3-D CAD dimensions. A 3-D object can be formed by repeating laser cladding layer by layer. The key of the build-up mechanism is the effective control of powder delivery and laser power to be irradiated into the melt-pool. A feedback control system using optical sensors is introduced to control laser power and powder mass flow rate. Using H13 tool steel and $CO_2$ laser system, comprehensive analysis are executed to test the efficiency of the system. In addition, the dimensional characteristics of directed deposited material are investigated with the parameters of deposition thickness, laser power, traverse speed and powder mass flow rate.
An ultraviolet pulsed laser ablation of polyimide film coated with platinum has been used to enhance the sensitivity for the application as an electrochemical biosensor. Densely packed cones are formed on polyimide surface after UV irradiation which results in increase of surface area. In order to apply the sensitivity improvement of laser ablated polyimide film electrodes, the glucose oxidase modified biosensor was fabricated by using an encapsulation in the gel matrix through sol-gel transition of tetraethoxysliane on the surface of laser ablated polyimide film. The optimum conditions for glucose determination have been characterized with respect to the applied potential and pH. The linear range and detection limit of glucose detection were from 2.0 mM to 18.0 mM and 0.18 mM, respectively. The sensitivity of glucose biosensors fabricated with laser ablated polyimide film is about three times higher than that of plain polyimide film due to increase in surface area by laser ablation.
Bridge vibration displacements have been directly measured by LVDTs (Linear Variable Differential Transformers) or laser equipment and have also been indirectly estimated by an algorithm of integrating measured acceleration. However, LVDT measurement cannot be applied for a bridge crossing over a river or channel and the laser technique cannot be applied when the weather condition is poor. Also, double integration of accelerations may cause serious numerical deviation if the initial condition or a regression process is not carefully controlled. This paper presents an algorithm of estimating bridge vibration displacements using vibration strains measured by FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors and theoretical mode shapes of a simply supported beam. Since theoretically defined mode shapes are applied, even high modes can be used regardless of the quality of the measured data. In the proposed algorithm, the number of theoretical modes is limited by the number of sensors used for a field test to prevent a mathematical rank deficiency from occurring in computing vibration displacements.89The proposed algorithm has been applied to various types of bridges and its efficacy has been verified. The closeness of the estimated vibration displacements to measured ones has been evaluated by computing the correlation coefficient and by comparing FRFs (Frequency Response Functions) and the maximum displacements.

As several innovative technologies for flexible electric devices are being realized, demand for in-situ strain monitoring for flexible electric devices is being emphasized. Because flexible devices are commonly influenced by substrate strain, suitable strain sensors for flexible devices are essential for the sophisticated maneuvering of flexible devices. In this study, a flexible strain sensor based on an Ag electrode is prepared on a polyimide substrate using the LDW (laser direct writing) process. In this process, first, the Ag nanoparticles are coated on the substrate and selectively sintered using a focused laser. Because of the advantages of the LDW process (such as being mask-less, using low temperatures, and having non-vacuum characteristics), the entire fabrication process has been dramatically simplified; as a final outcome, a highly reliable strain sensor has been fabricated. Using this strain sensor, various strain conditions that arise from different bending radii can be detected by measuring real-time electrical signals.
This study proposes an optics-based active sensing system for continuous monitoring of underground pipelines in nuclear power plants (NPPs). The proposed system generates and measures guided waves using a single laser source and optical cables. First, a tunable laser is used as a common power source for guided wave generation and sensing. This source laser beam is transmitted through an optical fiber, and the fiber is split into two. One of them is used to actuate macro fiber composite (MFC) transducers for guided wave generation, and the other optical fiber is used with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors to measure guided wave responses. The MFC transducers placed along a circumferential direction of a pipe at one end generate longitudinal and flexural modes, and the corresponding responses are measured using FBG sensors instrumented in the same configuration at the other end. The generated guided waves interact with a defect, and this interaction causes changes in response signals. Then, a damage-sensitive feature is extracted from the response signals using the axi-symmetry nature of the measured pitch-catch signals. The feasibility of the proposed system has been examined through a laboratory experiment.

In this research, intelligent protection system for laser boat is introduced. The function of system is to measure the distance and velocity of object from our boat and generate control signals to avoid collision with moving targets. A novel approach to estimate object's position from our ship is tackled on this paper. To do this laser sensors are used to measure distance from ship to targets. The ship position and velocity is estimated by th Kalman filter algorithm. In the real phase, the filtering method will be applied to process signal gathered by laser sensors. Simulation to estimate ship's position and velocity under noise are executed and the results are introduced to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Absolute position sensors are widely used in machine tools and precision measuring instruments because measurement errors are not accumulated, and position measurements can be performed without initialization. The laser speckle-based absolute position sensor, in particular, has advantages in terms of simple system configuration and high measurement accuracy. Unlike traditional absolute position sensors, it does not require an expensive physical length scale; instead, it uses a laser speckle image database to measure a moving surface position. However, there is a problem that a huge database is required to store information in all positions on the surface. Conversely, reducing the size of the database also decreases the accuracy of position measurements. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new method to measure the surface position with high precision while reducing the size of the database. We use image stitching and approximation methods to reduce database size and speed up measurements. The absolute position error of the proposed method was about 0.27 ± 0.18 ㎛, and the average measurement time was 25 ms.

In this study, the structural performance tests, i.e., static tests and dynamic tests of the composite wind turbine blade, were carried out by using the embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The composite wind turbine blade used in the test is the 1/23 scale of the 750 kW composite blade. In static tests, the deflections along the blade were evaluated. Evaluations were carried out with simple beam theory and quadratic fitting method by using the embedded FBG sensors to predict the structural behavior with respect to the load. The deflections were compared to those obtained from the laser displacement sensor and electric strain gauges. They showed good agreement. Modal tests were performed to investigate the dynamic characteristics using the embedded FBG sensors. The natural frequencies obtained from the FBG sensors corresponding to the nine mode shapes of the blade were compared to those from the laser Doppler vibrometer. They were found to be consistent with each other. Therefore, it is concluded that the embedded FBG sensors have a great capability for measuring the structural performances of the composite wind turbine blade when structural performance tests are carried out.
In this study, as a part of the basic study for the application of optical fiber sensors to smart composite structures, the integrity of optical fiber sensors embedded within the composite structures was examined and then the laser signal transmitted through optical fiber sensors during the deformation of host structures was investigated. Firstly, it was found that bending test could be substituted for tensile test by comparing cumulative failure distribution based on weakest link theory and introducing the correction factor. Weibull parameters were obtained through the experiments and the correction factor was found to be applied to cumulative failure distribution derived from bending test. The integrity of embedded optical fiber sensors due to the thermal effect was evaluated by the comparison of the mean tensile strengths of cured and uncured optical fibers. Secondly, relationships between stress-strain curve obtained in tensile test of composite laminate and the intensity of laser signal transmitted through embedded optical fibers were examined and the possibility of the effective damage detection using optical fiber sensors was studied.
