Development of Noncontact Temperature Sensor Using Silver Halide Optical Fiber for Medical Usages (Silver Halide 광섬유를 이용한 의료용 비접촉식 온도 센서 개발)

  • We have developed a noncontact temperature sensor using a silver halide optical fiber. The infrared collimator and focus head are connected both ends of a silver halide optical fiber with SMA connectors and used to collimate radiations of a heat source and to focus them to infrared sensors such as a pyroelectric sensor and a thermopile sensor, respectively. The relation ships between the temperatures of a heat source and the output signals of the infrared sensors are determined to measure the surface temperature of a heat source. The measurable temperature range is from 25 to $60^{\circ}C$. It is expected that a noncontact temperature sensor using a silver halide optical fiber can be developed for medical usages such as temperature monitoring during hyperthermia, cryosurgery, laser surgery and diagnostic procedure based on the results of this study.

Characteristics of fiber-optic current sensors using perpendicular coil formers (수직원형틀을 이용한 광섬유전류센서의 동작특성)

  • Thermally-stabilized fiber-optic current sensors are proposed and demonstrated. The sensor head is made of two coil formers combined perpendicularly. In this sensor head, bending-induced birefringences can be reduced to the level much smaller than those of the single former type because the eigen-axes of the two perpendicular coil formers are made orthogonal to each other. Moreover, thermal variation of the birefringence is also expected to be minimized by the orthogonality of the two polarization eigen-axes. We changed the temperature slowly in the range of 20~45$^{\circ}C$ during 100 minutes. The overall linearity of the sensor is better than 1.2% in the range of 0~1000A. The long-term fluctuation of the sensor is less than 1% when measured for 3 hours at 500A and room temperature. Two orthogonally-polarized laser diodes are combined together to make the incident beam unpolarized. In the signal processing, the signals are separated by two parts and normalized respectively, which minimize the efects of optical fluctuations coming from sources, connectors, etc.

A Probabilistic Approach for Mobile Robot Localization under RFID Tag Infrastructures

  • SLAM(Simultaneous localization and mapping) and AI(Artificial intelligence) have been active research areas in robotics for two decades. In particular, localization is one of the most important issues in mobile robot research. Until now expensive sensors like a laser sensor have been used for the mobile robot's localization. Currently, as the RFID reader devices like antennas and RFID tags become increasingly smaller and cheaper, the proliferation of RFID technology is advancing rapidly. So, in this paper, the smart floor using passive RFID tags is proposed and, passive RFID tags are mainly used to identify the mobile robot's location on the smart floor. We discuss a number of challenges related to this approach, such as RFID tag distribution (density and structure), typing and clustering. In the smart floor using RFID tags, because the reader just can senses whether a RFID tag is in its sensing area, the localization error occurs as much as the sensing area of the RFID reader. And, until now, there is no study to estimate the pose of mobile robot using RFID tags. So, in this paper, two algorithms are suggested to. We use the Markov localization algorithm to reduce the location(X,Y) error and the Kalman Filter algorithm to estimate the pose(q) of a mobile robot. We applied these algorithms in our experiment with our personal robot CMR-P3. And we show the possibility of our probability approach using the cheap sensors like odometers and RFID tags for the mobile robot's localization on the smart floor.

  • Inclinometer sensors are widely applied in many fields. Especially in the field of construction of high-rise buildings also measure the horizontal and vertical help has been applied to monitor. Recent micro electro-mechanical system(MEMS) technology with the development of the many sensors have been developed. In this paper, a MEMS inclinometer is based on a MEMS accelerometer. The sensor can measure the angle of inclination using the relationship between static acceleration and gravity acceleration from an accelerometer. From this principle, inclinometer has been developed that has more accurate. The accuracy is proved by the experiment with laser displacement. Results in the experiment express high-accuracy, stability and economics of MEMS inclinometer. In conclusion, wireless MEMS inclinometer sensor is expected to be applicable in the areas of construction and many other industries with accurate and convenient monitoring system.

Polymeric Waveguide Bio Sensors with Bragg Gratings (브래그 격자 광도파로형 바이오 센서)

  • Biophotonic sensors based on polymer waveguide with Bragg reflection grating are demonstrated in this work. Waveguide Bragg reflectors were designed by using the effective index method and the transmission matrix method. The grating pattern was formed by exposing the laser interference pattern on a photoresist. On top of the inverted rib waveguide, the Bragg reflection grating was inscribed by the O2 plasma etching. In order to perform the bio-molecule detection experiment, a calixarene molecule was self-assembled on top of thin Au film deposited on the waveguide Bragg reflector. To measure the response of the sensor, several PBS solutions with different concentrations of potassium ion from 1 pM to $100\;{\mu}M$ were dropped on the sensor surface. The shift of Bragg reflection wavelength was observed from the fabricated sensor device, which was proportional to the concentration of potassium ion ranging from 1 pM to 108 pM.

  • Leakages at plant structures of power and petrochemistry plants have led to casualties and economic losses. These leakages are caused by fatigue failure of pipelines and their wall thickness. Vibration measurement methods for plant pipelines mainly use acceleration and laser sensors. These sensors are difficult to install and operate and thus lead to an increase in operational cost especially for wide area surveillance. Recently, measurements of leak and vibration displacements using cameras have attracted the interest of many researchers. This method has advantages such as simple installation, long distance monitoring, and wide area surveillance. Therefore, in this paper, we have developed a system that can measure the leakage and vibrational displacement by using a camera. Furthermore, the developed system was verified with experimental data.

  • Inspecting the dimensional accuracy of a car-body in assembly line is a very important process to assure high productivity. Now there exist two common inspecting methods in practice. One is to measure a sampled car-body with three dimensional measuring machine, and the other is to measure car-body with three dimensional measuring machine, and the other is to measure car-body in assembly line using many sensors fixed to a large jig frame. The formal method takes too long to inspect a sampled car-body of a same sort, and cannot therefore give an useful error trend for the whole production. On the other hand, the latter lacks flexibility and is very cost-intensive. By using industrial robots and sensors, an in-line Car-Body Measuring(CBM) system which ensured high flexiblity and sufficient accuracy was developed. This CBM cell operates in real production line and measures the check points by the non-contact type using camera and laser displacement sensor(LDS). This system can handle about 15 Measuring points within a cycle time of 40 seconds. A process computer controls whole process such as data acquisition file handling and data analysis. Robot arms changes in length due to ambient temperature fluctuation affecting the measuring accuracy. To compensate this error, a robot arm calibration process was developed.

Developing an Instrument Ensuring Reliable Contact Conditions for Contact-Type Area-varying Capacitive Displacement Sensors (접촉식 면적변화형 정전용량 변위센서의 접촉 안정성을 위한 기구의 개발)

  • A contact-type area-varying capacitive displacement sensor, or CLECDiS, can measure displacements over millimeter ranges with nanometer resolution. However, a small changes in the contact condition due to the surface profile or friction, which are inherent characteristics of contact-type sensors, lead to significant distortion of the output signal. Therefore, ensuring reliable contact conditions during CLECDiS measurements is the most important area to be improved in their actual use. Herein, in order to design an instrument for ensuring reliable contact conditions, the contact condition is analyzed by characterizing the signal distortion, observing the pressure distribution between the contacting surfaces, and measuring the motional errors of the sensor using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). The manufactured instrument enables a CLECDiS to be used in an ultraprecise positioning system with improved reliability.

Monte Carlo Localization for Mobile Robots Under REID Tag Infrastructures (RFID 태그에 기반한 이동 로봇의 몬테카를로 위치추정)

  • Localization is a essential technology for mobile robot to work well. Until now expensive sensors such as laser sensors have been used for mobile robot localization. We suggest RFID tag based localization system. RFID tag devices, antennas and tags are cheap and will be cheaper in the future. The RFID tag system is one of the most important elements in the ubiquitous system and RFID tag will be attached to all sorts of goods. Then, we can use this tags for mobile robot localization without additional costs. We discuss a number of challenges related to this approach, such as tag distribution (density and structure), typing and clustering. When a mobile robot localizes in this smart floor, the localization error mainly results from the sensing range of the RFID reader, because the reader just ran know whether a tag is in the sensing range of the sensor. So, in this paper, we suggest two algorithms to reduce this error. We apply the particle filter based Monte Carlo localization algorithm to reduce the localization error. And with simulations and experiments, we show the possibility of our particle filter based Monte Carlo localization in the RFID tag based localization system.

Growth and characterization of molecular beam epitaxy grown GaN thin films using single source precursor with ammonia

  • Gallium Nitride(GaN) attracts great attention due to their wide band gap energy (3.4eV), high thermal stability to the solid state lighting devices like LED, Laser diode, UV photo detector, spintronic devices, solar cells, sensors etc. Recently, researchers are interested in synthesis of polycrystalline and amorphous GaN which has also attracted towards optoelectronic device applications significantly. One of the alternatives to deposit GaN at low temperature is to use Single Source Molecular Percursor (SSP) which provides preformed Ga-N bonding. Moreover, our group succeeds in hybridization of SSP synthesized GaN with Single wall carbon nanotube which could be applicable in field emitting devices, hybrid LEDs and sensors. In this work, the GaN thin films were deposited on c-axis oriented sapphire substrate by MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) using novel single source precursor of dimethyl gallium azido-tert-butylamine($Me_2Ga(N_3)NH_2C(CH_3)_3$) with additional source of ammonia. The surface morphology, structural and optical properties of GaN thin films were analyzed for the deposition in the temperature range of $600^{\circ}C$ to $750^{\circ}C$. Electrical properties of deposited thin films were carried out by four point probe technique and home made Hall effect measurement. The effect of ammonia on the crystallinity, microstructure and optical properties of as-deposited thin films are discussed briefly. The crystalline quality of GaN thin film was improved with substrate temperature as indicated by XRD rocking curve measurement. Photoluminescence measurement shows broad emission around 350nm-650nm which could be related to impurities or defects.
