  • ZnO thin films on (l00) p-type Si and sapphire substrates have been deposited by a pulsed laser deposition technique using an Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 266 nm. The influence of the deposition parameters such as oxygen pressure, substrate temperature and laser energy density on the properties of the grown films was studied. The experiments were performed for substrate temperatures in the range of 200∼50$0^{\circ}C$ and oxygen pressure in the range of 100∼700 sccm. All of the films grown in this experiment show strong c-axis orientation with (002) textured ZnO peak. With increasing substrate temperature, the FWHM (full width at half maximum) and surface roughness were decreased. In the case of using sapphire substrate, the intensity of PL spectra increased with increasing ambient oxygen flow rate. We investigated the structural and morphological properties of ZnO thin films using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism of improving acid resistance of Nd-YAG laser irradiated tooth enamel and determine the most effective energy density for improving acid resistance. The bovine tooth enamel were lased with a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. The energy densities of exposed laser beam were varied from 10 to $70\;J/cm^2$. To investigate the degree of improving acid resistance by irradiation, all the samples were submerged to demineralize in 0.5 N $HClO_4$ solution for 1 minute. After 1 minute, 0.05 % $LaCl_3$ was added to the solution for interrupting the demineralization reaction. The amounts of dissolved calcium and phosphate in the solution were measured by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and the UV/VIS spectrophotometer, respectively. To examine the mechanism of improving acid resistance, X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were taken. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the samples were obtained in the $10^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}2{\theta}$ range with $Cu-K{\alpha}$ radiation using M18HF(Mac Science Co.) with X-ray diffractometer operating at 40 KV and 300 mA. The infra-red spectra of the ground samples in 300 mg KBr pellets 10 mm diameter were obtained in the $4000cm^{-1}\;to\;400cm^{-1}$ range using JASCO 300E spectrophotometer. The scanning electron microscopy was carried out using JSM6400(JEOL Co.) with $500{\sim}2000$ times magnification. The results were as follow 1. The concentration of calcium dissolved from laser irradiated enamel with $50J/cm^2$ was significantly lesser than that of unlased control group (p<0.05) 2. From the result of the X-ray diffraction analysis, $\beta$-TCP, which increases acid solubility, was identified in lased enamel but the diffraction peaks of (002) and (004) became sharp with increasing energy density of laser irradiation. This means that the crystals in lased samples were grown through the c-axis and subsequently, the acid solubility of enamel decreased. 3. The a-axis parameter was slightly increased by laser irradiation, whereas the c-axis parameter was almost constant except for a little decrease at $50J/cm^2$. 4. In the infra-red spectra of lased enamels, phosphate bands ($600{\sim}500cm^{-1}$), B-carbonate bands (870, $1415{\sim}1455cm^{-1}$), and A-carbonate band ($1545cm^{-1}$) were observed. The amounts of phosphate bands and the B-carbonate bands were reduced, on the other hand, the amount of the A-carbonate band was increased by increase the energy density. 5. The SEM experiments reveal that the surface melting and recrystallization were appeared at $30J/cm^2$ and the cracks were observed at $70J/cm^2$. From above results, It may be suggested that the most effective energy density for improving acid resistance of tooth enamel with the irradiation of Nd-YAG laser was $50J/cm^2$. The mechanism of improving acid resistance were reduction of permeability due to surface melting and recrystallization of lased enamel and reduction of acid solubility of enamel due to decrease of carbonate content and growth of crystal.

  • We generated a diffraction free beam from Nd:YAG laser with an NBUR (negative branch unstable ring) resonator. The field inside the resonator had a plane wavefront and a homogeneous intensity distribution and the output beam through a scraper mirror of an annular type was used as a source. The outpur beam had an inner radius of 2.5 mm and an outer radius of 5 mm. In this experiment, we used a Fourier transformation lens with the focal length of 5 m to observe the far-field pattern. The lens was placed at a distance of the focal length from the scraper mirror and we found that the beam did not show any noticable diffraction over the distance of 13 m from the lens.

  • W fabricated thin film using Na$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$NbO$_3$ volatile material by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and studied characterization from EM, XRD, P-E. The density and scale of droplet, which is the defect of PLD, was investigated by SEM but large droplet was not found. The degree of assemble oriented C-axis measured with X-ray diffraction suggests that this film oriented C-axis achieved by $\theta$-2$\theta$ scan and rocking curves shows good self-assemble phenomenon, finally $\phi$-scan does that all of the four directions of the lattice in film equals to those of substrate. P-E hysteresis loop shows residual remnant polarization or saturation polarization value, but it is applicable to memories.ies.

  • Two-dimensional photonic quasicrystal (PQCs) template patterns have been fabricated on a 1.1 ${\mu}m$-thick DMI-150 photoresist using a multiple-exposure holographic method. A 442-nm HeCd laser was utilized as a light source and the holographic exposure was carried out at a fixed angle of ${\theta}$ = 6$^{\circ}$. After the first holographic exposure, the sample was rotated to a proper angle and the second exposure was performed to the same manner. This exposure process was repeated n/2 times to obtain n-fold symmetric PQC patterns and then the sample was developed. The diffraction patterns of the fabricated PQC template were observed using a 632.8-nm HeNe laser. The fabricated PQCs exhibited 8, 10 and 12-fold rotational symmetry, which was in a good agreement with the interference simulation results. In addition, the diffraction patterns with n-rotation symmetry were observed for the corresponding n-fold PQCs. We believe that the multiple-exposure holography is a good method to fabricate the mesoscale PQCs with a high rotational symmetry.

  • Although there are many ways to measure the diameter of a cylindrical object, in this study, the diameter of a cylindrical objects were measured by the geometric optical method and interference-diffraction method which are two kinds of tipical non-contact methods. In geometric optical method, the curved laser beam is formed on the cylindrical surface by spreading the inclined laser beam using the cylindrical lens. The curve is captured by CCD camera and the diameter is calculated by geometry. And the interference and diffraction patterns of investigated cylindrical objects are analyzed in interference-diffraction method. In this study, the cylindrical objects, whose diameters are $0.05\;mm\;\~\;100.50\;mm$ were measured by the geometric optical method and interference-diffraction method. The results show that in each method, the relative errors of the measurement are within $2\%$ and $1\%$, respectively and these non-contact methods can be applied in the quick measurement of many objects.

  • The effect of fuel injection characteristics on engine performance has been known for improving fuel economy and emission reduction. In this study, the spray characteristics of crude palm oil blended fuel with conventional diesel fuel was investigated. The experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of crude palm oil blending ratio and injection pressure on the spray behavior. The droplet size of injected fuel was analyzed through laser diffraction particle analyzer (LDPA). Also, spray atomization characteristics were investigated in terms of Sauter mean diameter (SMD) and droplet distribution at various injection conditions. Fuel containing crude palm oil has different spray pattern on account of the high viscosity. Through those experimental results, we found that the increase of blending ratio made droplet size larger, SMD of biodiesel 100% was increased 30.2% than that of diesel fuel 100% under injection pressure of 60 MPa.

  • A diffraction limited optical system for head mounted displays (HMDs) was designed. This optical system consists of four modules, including 1:5 mm and 5:30 mm beam expanders, polarization grating-polarization conversion system (PG-PCS) and refractive/diffractive projection optical module. The PG-PCS module transforms the unpolarized Gaussian beam to a linearly polarized beam and it simultaneously homogenizes the spatial intensity profile. The optical projector module has a $30^{\circ}$ field of view, a 22 mm eye relief, and a 10 mm exit pupil diameter with a compact structure. Common acrylic materials were utilized in the optical design process; therefore, the final optical system was lightweight. The whole optical system is suitable for a 0.7 inch liquid crystal on silicon microdisplay (LCOS) with HDTV resolution ($1920{\times}1080$) and $8.0{\mu}m$ pixel pitch.
